View Full Version : White screen when playing a video
OK, it is me again. I don't know if this is a bug in the xbmc live SVN that I'm running or an issue with the skin but I didn't seem to get this when using mediastream_redux.
When I start a video, and I try to bring up the info or menu windows within the first few seconds of the video playing, the screen turns all white.
Has this been noticed before? If not I can do some more troubleshooting and provide more info.

nope, you're the first.

please do, i would need a debuglog the begin with. ;-)

OK, I just tested and it definitely does not do it with either the PM3.HD or mediastream_redux skins. When I get some more time later today I'll pull together some info.

I am experiencing the same behaviour whenever I play a 1080 HD mmovie and pop the menu to add subtitles or click the info menu

cheers for the report, now gabbott doesn't have to feel alone anymore. ;-)
just in case anyone is expecting me to fix it (that is, if i can), i certainly won't be able to do it without a debuglog.

I am also having a white screen problem.
here is a pastebin: http://pastebin.com/m5aa524d8
The white screen appears 2 seconds into now playing and visualization screen when playing music with fanart. When starting to play, the correct fanart is displayed for 2 seconds, and then the screen turns white. Sounds like my problem is related to the subject of this post.

thanx i will look into it some more BUT you're using r22743
in case you haven't heard, everything above r22528 is considered highly unstable:

Thanx I know - so I suspect these problems are SVN related, and not a problem with your amazing skin. Just thought I'd pop up a log since the topic was white screen and this was exactly what I was experiencing with the latest svn from PPA.:;):
I'm also seeing the same with SVN22278 with any resolution (tested with 480,720,1080) file in a mkv container.
http://pastebin.com/m5834db9b
Whilst testing I've found that if I load straight into Transparency! I get the white screen when playing .mkv files and calling up the info overlay. However, If I switch to PM3.HD I don't get the white screen when calling up the info overlay. If I then switch back to Transparency in the same session and play a .mkv file I can call up the info overlay without the white screen.
Let me know if you want a log of this.

thanx a bunch!
i was able to reproduce it.
guess i've got some troubleshooting to do. i'll keep you guys posted.
edit (notes to myself):
- the error is not present in Transparency! v1.00
- the error only occurs if VDPAU is enbled
- the error is triggered by the system time label on the menu/info window.....weird.
- looks like i fixed it by making some changes to Home.xml.....still weird.
For what it's worth the same issue happens with r22528 (last stable build before the merge).
cheers, keep an eye on my previous post.
i'll update things there with whatever i find out.

The I downgraded to r22528, my problem went a away, so the debug log I submitted can be disregarded - mine was SVN related. Thanks!
Ronie, I see it is reproducible for others now. Sorry, it is the last weekend before the kids go to school so I've yet to have any time to further troubleshoot on my end. Let me know if you need any further info/debugs or anything.

thanx for letting me know!
Any word on a fix for this? I'm similar to what's been reported too:
* I run 22278
* I run VDPAU (8200 IGP)
* This occurs on all HD videos
Thing is, I don't know if it's high-def video, or the MKV container, because all my HD video is MKV. :P
it's VDPAU and no clue why it's happening.
i'll post a workaround for testing purposes in a bit.
edit:
copy this Home.xml (http://ronie.intodarkness.nl/Home.xml) to the 720p folder, it'll overwrite the current one.
restart xbmc and please let me know if the issue is fixed.
I've just tested the new Home.xml file with a few different mkv files and the issue is fixed for me.
Thanks for all your hard work Ronie.... Oh, and what took you so long ;o)
I just installed the new Home.xml file, will play around with it for a bit and report back.
I've just discovered that the white screen bug still happens when I press either the "z" or "o" key whilst playing a VDPAU decoded movie... Not a biggie but can be a pain when trying to debug files etc.
Cheers

thanx. i already was afraid it would turn up again somewhere...
guess it's back to the drawing board for me.

i'm afraid i can't reproduce the issues with 'z' and 'o'... not with the original T! v2.00 and not with the 'fix' i've posted.
could you post a debuglog and a screenshot of Settings > Videos > Player ?
edit:
oh...and maybe a step by step description of how you can reproduce it?
cheers, i'm gonna need all the help i can get on this one.
Just to note I've been using the updated Home.xml file and it has mainly solved my white screen issues. I had 2 instances where I got a white screen playing a trailer in a window (only the window itself had a white screen) but I havent been able to retrace my steps to duplicate it again, so probably not terribly helpful but thought I'd mention it.
OK, I found a way I can duplicate the white screen while playing a trailer in a window (and this is with the updated Home.xml file).
Edit: I'm using the slide view for movies, btw.
After starting to play the trailer I then start navigating to other movies, when I navigate to the third movie the trailer window goes white.
I've attached a debug and note that I'm running SVN 22528 even though from the debug it shows as unknown.
http://pastebin.com/m7f798388
and here is a screen shot of my video player settings:
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/6563/phpbmq3wa.png (http://www.postimage.org/)
Update: ok, I've found that the number of movies you have to start scrolling through either left or right isn't consistent. But I've found if I scroll through enough movies it will eventually happen.
thanx, confirmed !
although scrolling seems to work fine for me, as soon as i switch to fullscreen or escape back to the home menu, the screen turns white.
i've also noticed sometimes the dvd cases would disappear as soon as i start the trailer.
guess this gives me something to do for the rest of the day :-(
i'm afraid i can't reproduce the issues with 'z' and 'o'... not with the original T! v2.00 and not with the 'fix' i've posted.
Heh, You know what? Neither can I :( If I ever manage to reproduce it I'll make a note of how I did it.
Sorry for wasting your time.

you're not wasting anyone's time!
i'm glad you brought up the fact that the issue still occurs.
after hours and hours (and hours) of troubleshooting, i'm afraid i have to give up and ask the pro's for help: http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=57993
Ronie, just wanted to say thanks so much for all the work you've put into this skin and the willingness to fix any reported issues. Make sure you give time to give yourself a break as well, it sounds like you've spend quite a bit of time with this one :)

I also mentioned this in ronie's thread but is this related to my issue as well.

I made a ticket for it but haven't noticed naything new for it. http://xbmc.org/trac/ticket/7110

May or may not be related (man I'm such a geek, I love watching the development in XBMC trac)..

"fix the white texture bug when texture file not found - This bug comes when DirectX branch into linuxport. when texture file not found, it display as white box."
"Thanks for the patch - in SVN as of r23145"
thanx for the headsup.
it's a different issue though, the white screen bug was already present before the directx merge.
white screen bug is fixed in xbmc r23193 (http://xbmc.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/xbmc?view=rev&revision=23193).
there's still several other issues with current svn though...
