i have been scratching my head for quite a while now about wether rtsp streaming is supported along with mms. can anyone give me any details about this?

yes real-time streaming protocol (rtsp/rtp) (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=87054&atid=581841&func=detail&aid=817647) should be doable, thinks it's just a matter of a developer having the time and interest for it.
(note! standard rtsp/rtp should not be confused with realmedia rtsp/rdt (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=4;t=42) at that is a propriotory protocol of realnetworks, see here (http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/forums/ikonboard.pl?act=st;f=4;t=42)).
given that there is a lot of work currently on going in moving xbmc to make use of the newer mplayer 1.0pre5 it should be more than possible to get this to work. as far as my understanding of it goes, 1.0pre5 already should completely support rtsp streaming of realmedia files natively and i believe that rtsp/rtp should also be feasible with the inclusion of the live.com library for mplayer.
given that most everything is working within the mplayer port it wouldnt seem to be too difficult to get this working. it may be as simple as simply getting xbmc to correctly identify and parse .ram files like it does other stream sources, but as i am completely unfamiliar with the actual code this my just be wishful thinking on my part.
if you really cant wait a quick and dirty temporary fix for this is to use mplayer on your pc to dump the stream to a shared folder and then play the file from xbmc which has worked for me. this can be done with: mplayer -dumpstream http://stream-source-address

hi,
i am trying to play an rtsp-stream but i get the error message like: "not an rtsp compatible stream...". i don't know the exact message since it just flashes at the screen why i try to play it.
i know the stream requires isma compability and it works fine using vlc at winxp. should xbmc be able to play this as well?
i cant answer your question directly, because i just dont know. but if mplayer pre6 can play them, then xbmc can play them. try researching at http://www.mplayerhq.hu.
you should also enable debug logging, and check your xbmc.log file after it fails. it will provide lots of information on what you're trying to play.

freebox = triple play box from provider named free : television, free phone and 24mb for france

free has just announced the availability of the mode multipost for freebox. this service makes it possible to look the channels of television at the same time on the pc and television. freebox can send to the maximum 8 fluxs simultaneously, and... it is possible to look at 2 different channels!
the freebox have now a server rtsp and http, and is capable of diffuse mpeg2 ts flux to ethernet, usb et wifi.
the server http able you to download a playlist, who have the urls rtsp for each channels available for you.

this is not supported by default. the pre-compiled version you downloaded was built with live555 (aka live.com) support. the mplayer.dll in cvs likely does not have this compiled in.

so is there a problem for the team xbmc to compile live555 libs with mplayer from cvs so 5-6 millions of free users could show their tv channels on xbmc... if it s the only thing who's missing to read theses rtsp urls.

i recompiled mplayer.dll with rtsp support, but xbmc just freezes after it connects to rtsp server. windows version of mplayer connects nicely to rtsp server. xbmc.log shows following lines:

it seems that xbmc supports rtp out of box. so i think it is wise to use it and make python script which handles rtsp protocol part. then channel changing delay will be smaller because we don't have start mplayer again. somebody here who is good in python and is willing to help?. it would be nice if we can do osd with python?

+1 for this feature, french python scripter for xbmc (beginner not a professionnal, but succeed some nice looking scripts). i'm using the same ip "freeadsl" with "freebox" modem, and i really want to get this rtsp stream on to my xbmc...
i made a lot of search on internet to find some python snippets to catch rtsp stream or something like this, but can't find anything.
a very good thing would be to watch from mplayer on xbmc the tv. but the biggest feature would be to get access to the stream, to catch it for recording on hdd
i'm not good at all in xbmc coding, but i know xbmc use cpp files as sources. i found this openrtsp that can play rtsp streaming :

i trying to watch streamed television on the xbox, but having some problems. i have an account at streamtv.dk. they broadcast in a few different formats. i can watch the streams in both quicktime and vlc. i asked them, if they could make support for xbmc, and they replied:
as far as it's known, xbmc still doesn't support rtsp stream mpeg-4, but almost. support for xvid and aac does, that it close. it can play files, but not streams yet.
is there really no support for rtsp stream mpeg-4?

is there a way to read in xbmc the rtsp url of channels from the freebox tv service ?

free has just announced the availability of the mode multipost for freebox. this service makes it possible to look the channels of television at the same time on the pc and television. freebox can send to the maximum 8 fluxs simultaneously, and... it is possible to look at 2 different channels!
the freebox have now a server rtsp and http, and is capable of diffuse mpeg2 ts flux to ethernet, usb et wifi.
the server http able you to download a playlist, who have the urls rtsp for each channels available for you.

it work with vlc and mplayer, but not with realplayer for the moment.
the freebox only support transport rtp/avp/udp and is limited to 8 sessions simultaneously.

it seems that vlc need the lib live555 and libdvbpsi to read the stream from freebox "multitv".
is there something in the libdvbpsi that isn't on mplayer so we can't read on xbmc ? is it portable ?
don't have the knowledges to do it but maybe this could help to progress in this way *:d

I finnally got a python script that handle rtsp requests and send back on http, the video datas. Then MPlayer is just fine to read it ! :D
it works for our french modem 'freebox' nad for VLC as RTSP server.
I don't know other servers that use rtsp urls, so I can't really test.
This one is able to serve several client at once for several servers ! Isn't that beautiful ?
Another French coder is preparing a PC interface to start VLC as RTSP server and to set some of your videos for streaming. This is just nice because A client ask to the proxy for a video, VLC encode it and stream it. So this proxy can be used to watch videos that can't be watched on your XBMC.
RTSP support would be awesome. This would make XBMC work together with Mediaportals TV Server

Other clients (like) XBMC could already use the tvserver if they
add support for playing back RTSP streams.
Second:
upnp might be added in the future who knows, but there are no plans for it at this moment.
