View Full Version : Tearing or video speeds up every few minutes

I'm having issues with videos tearing when watching them when the vsync option in XBMC is disabled. Which makes sense. However, when I enable the vsync option the tearing goes away, but every few minutes the video speeds up for a few seconds. The speed up is so noticeable that it's better to deal with the tearing. Log file shows nothing out of the ordinary. Just curious to know if there are any options to hopefully solve my problem or if anyone might know why the video speeds up every few minutes.
Thanks,
Harry

Since you did NOT include a pastebin of xbmc.log, let me guess, playing video content over a wireless connection to a remote server?

That's correct, but why would playing video over a wireless connection affect tearing and/or cause video to speed up. I can post the log file if you'd like, but I looked thru it the best I can and found nothing out of the ordinary.
Thanks,
Harry
EDIT: posted the log file in my post below. Sorry about that :)

LOL good guess Davilla :)
Harry Muscle - Read through this a little for my similar issue. http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=51930
Also what build did this start with? What was your last build that worked?

Thanks for that link. Reading it now.
Also, I might have been a little quick to conclude that the vsync option is what was causing my problem. Cause I was just watching a movie (with the vsync option off) and my problem is back, although, it manifested itself more in audio cutting out for a brief moment (split second) and possibly a video speed up, it was a bit hard to tell if the video sped up or not. This happened every 2 or 3 minutes while I was watching the movie.. Here's the actual log file from watching that movie. It might be a bit long, cause I did a bunch of other stuff before watching it, but the file that was causing the issue is the last one played, Journey to the Center of the Earth. I rebooted my audio equipment just to rule that out, but the issue continued.

Then I rebooted the machine and played the same file and the issue was gone. Here's the log file when everything was fine after the reboot. So I'm not sure if this is a hardware problem (ie: drivers, etc.) that goes away after a reboot or if this is a XBMC problem.

I'm also gonna post to the other thread you mentioned.
Thanks,
Harry
P.S. I'm using version 9.04.1 of XBMC for Windows.

I was looking thru the first log file again and it looks like I got 2 audio buffer underruns ... that would definitely cause the audio skipping, but I could swear it happened way more than just two times. I'll have to continue the experimentation. :)
Thanks,
Harry
EDIT: Looks like the audio skipping was just a buffer underrun. So please ignore the post above.

You have to turn on debug logging to get a proper log, these logs are not very useful.

Thanks. Didn't realize that. Btw, is there anyway to have the debug loggin on, but not have the extra info it shows displayed when using XBMC?
Thanks,
Harry

OK, getting back on track with this thread and ignoring my comment about audio cutting out (cause that was most likely just a buffer underrun and completely unrelated).
I'm still left with the issue, that if the Vertical Blank Sync option is enabled, the video will speed up for a second or two every few minutes. I've run a full debug log of it and attached it below. Btw, now that I know about debug logs, no wonder my logs weren't showing anything out of the ordinary. So I apologize for not including a log along with my first post.

The speed up happened in the last minute or so of the video playing (ie: I stopped playback within a minute of noticing the speed up). I noticed that in the log file it mentions a few buffer underruns, but I was watching the vq and aq while playing the video and during the speed up, the aq was above 90% and vq around 30%.
Hope this log can help. Also, please let me know if I should put together a trac ticket for this.
Thanks,
Harry
