View Full Version : Zotac IONITX-A Atom N330 Nvidia Ion?
Is anyone else running XBMC-Live 9.04.1 on a Zotac IONITX-A board with Nvidia? I am running it with 2GB of ram and so far everything except 1080p is running flawlessly. When running at 1080p with VDPAU I still get video jitter on occasion. I am pulling the mkv over a network so I am not ruling out the fact the jitter could be caused from network congestion. Does XBMC Live have any settings for buffering video like the original XBOX? I did not see them in the menu structure. As far as CPU and memory on this box they are all sitting at less than 10% utilization. It looks like Linux is seeing the Atom as 4xCPU (I will have to check the BIOS and see if hyper threading is enabled.
Overall the ZOTAC is working as expected, I just need to get rid of the video jitter on 1080p.
On another note the M200-LCD case from mini-box.com does not fit the Zotac motherboad with the CPU cooling fan. I would stick to the M300-LCD for this board. Also note the Compact flash on this case is IDE not SATA and the Zotac does not have a IDE interface. Lastly the connector for the front USB ports to the Zotac motherboard is less than desired. I have not tested the IR or the LCD either.
How is everyone else doing on testing this cpu/motherboard?
ps. I got my box from OrbitMicro.com they had a shipment earlier this week!
search and you shall find...

I received mine on Saturday morning and started to play with it this week end.
It's currently installed in a mini-box M350 case, the Zotac FAN _is_ connected (GPU temp around 45°, 85 without the FAN ...)
I started with Kubuntu + XBMC 9.04.1 and noticed a lot of jitter ... until I realized that I forgot to disable KDE effects ;-)
I tested XBMC live during few minutes and did notice some jitter also ... but I did not spend time to find what was the cause of this.
I installed Ubuntu 9.04 with latest nvidia drivers, and everything is running pretty well so far. I however do notice some jitter (very low number, I can stay several minutes without noticing anything) when watching 1080p over the network (streamed from my Alix NAS), even if XBMC does not show any "buffering" message. I also do not have any "dropped" frame according to what I can see after having pressed the "o" key. I'm not sure what this really means, if no frame is dropped according to XBMC, what can be the cause of this "jitter" ?
I did not have a lot of time during the week end, so I only _started_ to play with it. It's currently connected to my Dell 24 monitor using DVI, I did not test it up to now on my TV so do not know if HDMI works as expected (with sound). It seems that standby and hibernate don't work yet, and lm-sensors is unable to recognize any chip for temperature monitoring. The Atheros Wi-Fi card works out of the box (my access point is another Alix box running pfSense so 802.11g only -> I don't know if the 802.11n mode supported on the Atheros chip can be used with Linux).

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 with latest nvidia drivers, and everything is running pretty well so far.
Update :
I did some additional tests, the Zotac is now connected thru its wired ethernet interface and uses a Samba (*) share -> there's no more jitter that my eyes can see on 1080p mkv content :-)
(*) I've been using XBMSP shares for years (ccxstream running on my Kurobox, then Linkstation Pro then the Alix, and used by my Xbox like a charm). It seems however that this is no more the solution these days, when streaming _HD_ content to the XBMC / Linux, things like Fast Forward & Rewind are a pain -> with a Samba share, no problem).
Did someone tried tu run Aeon with this board ?
Are you guys using a remote control with this board? If yes, how? Does it have a n IR or are you using some kind of usb adapter?
Thanks!

I am working on getting the M300-LCD case IR port on the PICO-LCD. So far no luck though. As a backup plan I have a Super Joy 9 with the original XBOX DVD Remote Kit.
Did someone tried tu run Aeon with this board ?
Yup - it's not quite as smooth as my desktop (Shock!) but it's perfectly useable and looks very good.
VDPAU is working an absolute treat for me, though I did have a bit of a game getting the drivers on. I semi-followed the XBMCBuntu guide and it's all going sweet, though I opted for full fat Ubuntu because I'm a newbie and wanted to play, too.
High Quality Flash in fullscreen [in Firefox] works great, though I'm told High Def will stutter.
I'm thinking about buying one of these myself but I'm very concerned about flash... can you confirm that HQ flash full screen is ok but HD not?
Thanks
Hi Fred, I'll try and take a look at HD tonight. HQ was definitely fine though - looked just like normal broadcast TV in full screen mode. I'm hoping Adobe will eventually bring out a version of Flash which takes advantage of the GPU.
The two issues that I have ongoing are:
HDMI Overscan in Ubuntu - not an issue with XBMC (as you can correct it within the software) but I've had to change the toolbar sizes in Gnome for now so I can get to them on the top of the screen. Apparently this can be fixed by some magic with the xconf.conf, but I've not really looked at it yet.
The wireless signal is rubbish compared to my laptop (which doesn't have an external antenna) and I can't get it to connect to my new Netgear Wireless N router. I'm hoping the latter is just user error, but I'm also wondering if my Wi-Fi aerial is broke.
It is nice kit - you need to run the fan, but even running full speed without a case you can barely hear it from the sofa. And not at all when you're watching a film. I'm still going to get a fan controller, though, I think.
just wanted to say, that the "A"-boards in germany are now available and they have the usb-power-jumper on board.
got mine yesterday.
Hi Hermand
Did you try the performance with flash in the end? Thanks...
Hi Hermand
Did you try the performance with flash in the end? Thanks...
I did and sadly, HD Flash video won't play well at all. There does appear to be a workaround, though as apparently you can download the FLV and play it in MPlayer which does have VDPAU.
I'm gonna have a play with that.
I did, however, get the wireless sorted and that's sweet now. I actually managed to stream a 16Gb 1080p file. It wasn't 100% perfect, but plenty watchable.
Personally though - I've given up on the file server idea, I think I'm just gonna put the hard drive in with the HTPC. I was originally going for a silent PC, but the HDD is quieter than the fan. I can't hear it from more than a few feet and you can't hear it at all when anythings playing. No more intrusive than a DVD player.
Managed to sort overscan, too - my TV had a "Full HD" option and setting that sorted it.
Okay, I just used www.keephd.com to grab the new T4 trailer. Downloaded an MP4 which promptly played back great in XBMC. It's not a perfect solution as obviously it's not streamed, but I'll bet someone will whip up a better way in no time!
just wanted to say, that the "A"-boards in germany are now available and they have the usb-power-jumper on board.
got mine yesterday.
Can you explain this, please, mate? What jumper and where on the board?
there is a jumper near the power-plug.
(just like any other jumper on a hardrive).
after setting it, my usb-mouse keeps up glowing, while the system is off.
so there is usb-power ON, while the system is OFF.
many users mentioned it as a "no-go". the first revision didn't have a usb-power feature.
but, after testing for some hours, i can't wake the system.
i don't mean waking from hybernate or something.
totally off. the only way to wake it up, is to push the button.
so i don't know a way to power-on this board with an ir-remote.
ps/2 and usb didn't work.
another thought:
the power-adapter itself consumes 17-18 watts.
even when it is not plugged into the mainboard.
so, why do i build a power-saving xbox-alternative-system when it consumes so much power when it is off?
damn. no good day for my ego
the psu is one of the least things, i thought about, while planning a htpc.
but now, with this 17 watts, i have to send it back to the store.
i'm using my xbox about 2 hours a day.
the rest of the day it stays off (power still plugged in)
it needs nearly 165 watts per day.
the ion-board would take 450 watts.
no way. it makes me sad, but this is definitly a "NO-GO" for me.
and still, i can't believe that it was never mentioned before.
by the way: the asrock ionstar needs 1 watt, when it is OFF.
Hi mate, how did you confirm the PSU power consumption? When the boards not on mine doesn't seem to get warm or anything and the LED is hardly gonna consume much. Is it possible you have a faulty one?
apanloco
2009-06-28, 18:05
it needs nearly 165 watts per day.
the ion-board would take 450 watts.
This really makes no sense.
Please read:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watt#Confusion_of_watts_and_watt-hours
EDIT: With a calculator I came to the conclusion that you mean that the ION draws 450 watt-hours per day (even when off). Damn that's a power hungry PSU.
i've used one of this
http://www.prevent-germany.com/media/images/energiemessgeraet_big.jpg
when the MoBo is "ON" it shows about 30 to 40 watt.
just as expected.
but when the MoBo is "OFF" it still shows 17 to 18 Watt.
i've made another test with my laptop/notebook-psu.
no power-consumption when it is not plugged in the laptop.
I'm wondering (hoping) if you have an iffy one. What about when you physically disconnect it from the board?
sad but true: exactly the same. 17 watt.
i wrote an email to the "feedback" from zotac.
maybe it is faulty. who knows.
but for now, i'll wait until the a-board will be available with standard atx-connector.
----
and here you can see the new jumper i mentioned before: (to use the usb-power feature)

I've bought one of these boards, it arrived last week and i got to play with it yesterday. Most of my time was spent worrying that I had a faulty board, luckily it turned out to be a faulty stick of ram. Hopefully tonight I'll be able to sort out the over scan, there seem to be plenty of topics about it on the Ubuntu forums.
I can't comment on power consumption while switched off, but there's an easy way around that, turn it off at the wall! I have an extension cord running from a wall socket next to my sofa to my tv. I just need to flick that 1 switch to turn off my tv, amp, sub, etc. My router and modem are on a separate socket behind the tv as they're always on.

Hi Jt - I quickly documented my own findings last night. It's mostly for own reference, but everything is working sweet for me right now:
http://www.dherman.co.uk/06/2009/zotac-ion-n330-ubuntu-xbmc
I spent ages playing with Overscan, and then I just found a setting on my TV!
thank you hermand, you've saved me a lot of time.
Can I recommend an addition to the guide, before installing the nvidia drivers make sure any drivers installed with apt are removed.
@ donabi:
Where did you buy your "A-Board"?
no 17w issue for me here using an ionitx-a ..
i got my board from kmelektronik.
Hi Donabi:
PSU Unplugged From Board:
Despite the PSU still having a bright green light, the power meter showed a resounding:
0 (zero) Watts. Nothing. Nada. Nil.
And nor did it budge.
Power When Motherboard Turned Off
1.2 Watts
Power When In 'Sleep' / 'Standby' Mode
Putting your board to sleep instead of shutting down actually doubles the power consumption to:
~2.5 - 2.7 Watts
Booting Up and Sat at XBMC
Max 41.5 Watts
~31.7 Watts at XBMC Main Screen
Playing 1080p Streamed Over Wireless
I was suprised by this one:
~31 (Low of 30, max of 31.5) Watts
i could cry
i've waited so long for this board ... and got one with a faulty psu. damn.
thx for psting your results.
the powerconsumption in standby is realy good.
probably, i would leave it in standby.
now i have to look for another shop in the eu.
But at least your hard work isn't wasted - you just need to swap the board!
i've waited so long for this board ...
Well... Here in Switzerland I have to wait 2 more weeks I guess. Nobody has it on stock so far. Damn...
But in the meantime I ordered the M350 case :D
i've actually pre-ordered a new one.
again at kmelektronik (strange, it is cheaper than my first order...)
again at kmelektronik
Well... I guess this was a mistake. Because http://www.cartft.com has it on stock. Its an onlineshop from germany.

Can one of you guys that already have theirs measure the height of the heatsink with the fan on. I am trying to gauge if this will board will fit in a custom enclosure that I have, but I can only find that the board is 170x170.
Thanks
Woot, I've just received mine -- everything working great with Live installed and the M350.
Except now I have to learn about setting up some NAS
I'd tried to avoid looking into that hardware... so much learning in so little time lol

Hi!
I've finally got my first flat screen tv (pioneer kuro...amazing), and now I'm digging into all this htpc stuff.
I'm currently using an Asus Pundit P1 barebone pc to run xbmc but the thing struggels on 1080p.. (AMD Athlon X2 5400, integrated graphics, no HW decoding). CPU is 97% all the time and the video and audio streams get out of sync, video is skipping frames etc.
So.. I'm about to build a dedicated machine to run xbmc. Honestly I was thinking about going for Popcorn player but I realized I dont like these packed solutions since they dont give you much flexibility. Luckily I have discovered Xbmc which is really a well made thing! Congrats to all the developers!
Now, since you guys are already playing with Zotac boards, I would like to ask you to help me decide about hardware..
So, I can't decide whether to go for ION platform or take the geForce 9300 + say intel E7400 dual core cpu. Does anyone have any info about the power consumption and heating of Zotac 9300 board + cpu comparing to the Zotac Ion B? If there is no big difference I would maybe still go for 9300 board since it gives me more flexibility, run win etc.
You may be asking why to run win? True, but thre reason is I'm using an external USB audio card (Native Instruments Audio kontrol1) only supported on win (if anyone knows it it works on linux please let me know).
Another question.. I saw that AsRock is producing the ION box.. What is better? Asrock or Zotac in terms of motherboard performance?
Thanks!
asrock and zotac is nearly the same.
the zotac has two more connectors at the rear.
e-sata and coaxial-digital-out.
the asrock is ready-to-use. case, dvd-drive. but not as flexible as the zotac.
powerconsumption:
you have to look for the TDP of the E7400.
ad the difference to the zotac + 10% or something.
that should be near the real results, i guess.

Hello
I just received my board... I am running latest XBMC Live BUT I cannot manage to have audio goind out of SPDIF digital audio plug.
For sure, everything is fin on the preamplifier side as I just unplugged the cable from my PCH-A100 to plug it to my ZOTAC ION A-serie board.
FYI, I disabled Internal Audio in BIOS to disable HDMi audio (aplay -l does not return it anymore).
Does anyone succeded in having SPIF output under XBMC Linux or Live ?

The way is the same like with every other mainboard. Name it Zotac, ASUS or what you want.
The forum here is full of this audio-issues with SPDIF and HDMI. You should give the search a try.
To make it short: Try iec958 in your audio-settings and pull up the volume in alsamixer.

The biggest problem for lots of people is that the zotac doesn't have wake-on-usb, so if you were planning on using a usb remote it will not be able to pull it out of standby.

Not so anymore. There is a new revision of the board that enables wake from USB. This is the board that is being chipped currently.

Are you sure? I've been hearing this from people on the forum, but I haven't seen the new revision actually for sale. Also, when I emailed zotac about this on 6/26 they said there was no information about when the new board was shipping. I'm guessing the pre-order on amazon is for the new revision though.
It's real, TheUni has one that was ordered from newegg.

Please forgive the newbie question... I've searched and can't find an answer.
How are you guys getting XBMC live onto your N330? Are you plugging in a USB CD-Drive, or using a memory stick? I'm taking delivery of one this week and am weighing up my options. I thought that creating a bootable memory stick would be a good option but it seems to me that I can only do this on the computer that it will eventually boot on, right?
Cheers,
james
@msevestre
I've got my bios set to Internal, leaves only 1 device when i check aplay -l
my xbmc is setup up like this:
Audio output: Digital
ac3 capable: true
dts capable: true
audio output device: hdmi
passthrough output device: hdmi
downmix: false
In gnome volume control, the switches tab, IEC958 is selected.
I didn't upgrade asla, I'm using the version that installed with jaunty. I'm currently playing the sound through my tv, hopefully I'll get time to set up my 5.1 speakers on Wednesday.
@sladflob
I'm running of a 8gig memory stick with a minimal ubuntu destkop installed. Used the cd drive from my desktop to install unto it.
EDIT: re-read your post slabflob and realised I didn't answer the main question.
If you're using the live version it shouldn't be a problem. However, if you want to do a proper Ubuntu install you'll need to install on the machine you're using it on.

Hi !
i finally succedded to use optical audio out... I usually prefer to use the coaxial digital audio output but I wasn't successfull to switch to it... I was testing about 98% of the time using coax output and the only times I tried with optical audio, I did a setup modification that disabled it ! Damn !
No way, I do not care, i finally have a working from which i was able to watch a movie yesterday night with a DTS soundtrack.
Atom & ION are perfect under latest XBMC Live and it works out of the box (alsa update is not the reason of audio finally working), with optical digital audio.

I have an IONTX A in an M350 box. (waiting to get my Silverstone LC09 box so I can install a slim Blu-ray drive). I'm using Ubuntu Jaunty and I have XBMC up and running using Nvidia driver 185.18.14. After I unmuted the Alsamixer items my SPDIF works using Rhytmnbox. I get HDMI video but there's no HDMI audio from within XBMC. On the Zotac site there is an Nvidia driver download for linux containing Lan and HD audio drivers. The readme says it is for Ubuntu 8.10 - kernel 2.6.27-7 and it says that: "HDMI audio driver can NOT work if NVIDIA X-driver haven't been installed." I assume that the HDMI audio won't work in XBMC under Ubuntu if this HD audio driver is not installed. Does anybody know if the Zotac driver for Ubuntu 8.10 will work with Ubuntu Jaunty? If not I guess I have to downgrade my OS install or wait for a new driver.

2 days ago I tried to switch to latest NVidia drivers and my XBMC Live never displayed again its graphical interface... thus I'll not try again to switch to a newer driver except is somebody explain me exactly how to do (and how to revert back to older one is something goes wrong... Anyway, my optical digital audio is now working... I would have prefered the coaxial one, but I did not manage to make it work...

Hey Guys,
I wanted to start a new tread but this section of the fourms do not allow this due to read only, and I don't think this is a XBMC problem.
I have my Zotac ION connected directly to my Sony Bravia KDL40Z4100 TV with HDMI. From my TV I connected the optical out to my Denon receiver. My Denon is older and does not have HDMI inputs. When I play any music or any video that is stereo I have no problems with sound on my TV or the Denon. When I play DD or DTS my TV sound is all white noise, but my Denon plays the audio fine. In the past when I used my desktop machine with a Asus EN9500GT with HDMI my TV would play the stereo and DD stuff and there would be no sound on the TV for DTS. Now my TV sound for surround stuff regardless of DD or DTS is white noise but my Denon plays everything great.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I tried the Zotac on 2 different sony TVs KDL40Z4100 and KDL40W3000 with the same problem. I install Windows XP and setup passthru with MPC and AC3filter and it works just like my desktop machine did with XBMC.
This wouldn't be a problem but my wife watches alot of downloaded TV shows that have DD and does not care to listen thru the Denon.
Guys...
I today connected my Zotac IONITX A Board (in a M350 Case) to my 7.1 Receiver (Denon). But unfortunately HDMI sound does not work. Can somebody point me in the right direction here? I think this is a common problem.

Maybe you can track it down by plugging it into your TV. Then you know if it is the receiver or the Zotac that needs some loving.
Did you set these settings in your config file?
<audiodevice>hdmi</audiodevice>
<passthroughdevice>hdmi</passthroughdevice>
They work great for me on my Zotac ION N330-A-U.
<audiodevice>hdmi</audiodevice>
<passthroughdevice>hdmi</passthroughdevice>
Thanks. I changed my config file. Now sound over HDMI does work.
I have an additional question: What about the CPU fan. Will you guys change the 'default' zotac fan?

Hi all,
I took delivery of my N330 board yesterday and have been impressed with how easy it's been to set up XBMC running off a thumbdrive. I'm running the latest Live version with the new nVidia drivers.
A couple of queries:
1) Does anyone else get a fair bit of background noise on their analogue audio output? It only appears once XBMC comes up so I don't think it's purely electrical.
2) I've got HDMI audio working, but pure audio MP3s play too fast. I've hunted around the forums but can't find a definitive fix. Anyone else seen this?
3) Related to 2, with the audio output set to HDMI, 1080p video content (both audio and video) play too fast. I'm guessing that if I fix 2 it will also fix this?
Thanks. Any help would be most appreciated.
james
Edit: Actually I just found the solution to 2&3: use plug:hdmi not just hdmi. Post I read previously called it plg:hdmi which didn't work

I'm still a bit on the fence with ordering the atom 330 board. I am concerned that the processor is too weak to get through the other demands beyond playing 1080p.
Is there ANY lag at all when maneuvering through the skins?
If you're looking through pictures, does it stutter at all when changing slides?
Does anyone that has this board notice any performance faults whatsoever?
I am praying that it's all butter and I can order once newegg gets their shipment, but I just can't get over the feeling that I'll regret not spending the extra ~$20 and going for the 775/9300 version with an E5200.
Tell me I'm nuts
Tstack, these are my concerns too! Despite the doubt about the processing power of ION board I'm also concerned about the power consumption of ION comparing to 775 cpu's. I've heard that the E7400 consumes up to 40W at most of the time..
I like the small boxes like the M350 or similar and that can only be achieved with Zotac Ion A board since 9300 board require much more power.
The small cases usually provide only up to 60W PSU which is not enough to power 9300 board + CPU. However, it is true that the stated TDP 65W is the consumption at full load and in real world this situation is rare.
Couple of days ago I was playing with Asus EEE PC (desktop) which is based on single core Atom. Win XP runs perfectly... but I didn't have a chance to try HD Flash video for which I've heard Atom cannot handle...
Well, I think if you will use Zotac Ion board for XBMC only and you will run it on linux, then the board is ok. If you plan to use windows then for now its more safe to go for 9300 since HW decoding on xbmc is not supported on win platform.
Anyway, in EU the board is currently unavailable and it seems it wont be for at least two more weeks...
Zotac owners, please post your experiences!

Anzbody some experience on it.
I am looking to buy a Silverstone LC12 and this comes with a PSU with 60W. Will it be enough for the ION 330? If so, i could buy the Zotac 330 D, and save 20€
If not shure I go for the A-Version.
Frozone I think 60W is more than enough for Ion, the board will never go over 35W. But check the HDD and DVD power requirements but I think they require at max 10W each.
The problem is with 775 boards which can go over 100W in peaks.
The question is, whether the ION consumes less power at the same task as E5200. ION would be (due to its slow CPU) at much higher load than E5200 - that means that ION would be at say 80% CPU while E5200 would be much lower, say at 10%. The consumption of E5200 would therefore be at max 10W higher than ION.
30W and 40W is not that big difference anyway considering the much more "spare power" of Core Duo/ Pentium platforms.
Frozone, I checked the silverstone site and they also provide LC12 with 120W PSU!
http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/p_spec.php?pno=lc12&area=usa
However, I still think 60W is ok for ION, but 120W is perfect for Zotac 9300 + E5200. I think the price of Zotac 9300+E5200 is nearly the same as Ion Itx D... a hard decision for me..

I know, but the Shop, where I want to buy, doesn´t offer the other PSU.
So I think Slim-DVD + Harddrive (1TB 3,5 or 500GB 2,5) + Board should be enough for the 60W PSU.

i love the idea of the zotax ion rig for the bedroom, but does the 9300 rig with an e5200 suffer from the +5v usb standby missing jumper?
Just curious since it will be a bedroom setup and all.
Im torn too between the two. I really didnt have intentions of installing a destop on this thing. Just XBMC-Live.
Although it could be cool i supose.
Zotac owners, please post your experiences!
I've a Zotax IONITX-D for a week now and I love it.
Running xbmclive in a 4Gb pendrive it serves as:
- HTPC (xbmclive + aeon skin)
- P2P center (mldonkey)
- DAAP server (mt-daapd) for Roku Radio
- VDR (tvheadend)
- Backup server (rsync)
- Youtube watch (youtube plugin for xbmc)
I've uploaded a video of the interfaz in youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THwkH9WyQRg)
I bougth IONITX-D version because A version was out of stock, and because a had a mini-itx case with power supply, but if you want a device visible in your living room, the A version with a small case could be a better option
Grajea cool! Thanks for info and the video! Have you maybe measured the power consumption and heating?
I'm just reading reviews of Asrock Ion 330. Because Zotac is currently unavailable, I have started thinking about Asrock Nettop pc...
I like building things by myself but Asrock sels for 275€, including 320GB HDD and slim DVDRW drive.. I dont think you can build a Zotac ION based rig with the same hardware for this price...And the case is very small and looks good. The only difference is that Zotac has WLAN but you can get a USB wlan adapter for 10€.
Has anyone seen the Asrock in real? Any comments?
I am currently in the process of replacing my XBOX based setup. The main motivation for the replacement is the ability to play HD content. My recorded TV also looks much better with some interlacing applied and the xbox cant do that at 1080i. Fanart on the xbox is not so good at 1080i either (not enough RAM)
I have opted for:
GeForce 9300-ITX WiFi
Celeron 440 (2ghz, 512 Cache, 35W)
4 Gig of Kingston RAM
Aywun MW-100 Case
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 LP CPU Cooler
Why:
MB:
I opted for the GeForce 9300-ITX WiFi, over the ION 9400, because the board uses a standard ATX power header. The case that I want (M10 - http://www.origenae.co.kr/en/htpc_m10.htm) supports power on with a fancy header, fixing the USB power on issue with the 9300, the ION board doesnt have the header and I dont want to stuff around with soldering.
Processor:
The processor is faster than the atom for most stuff, it is upgradable if I have any issues with slow performance on skins etc. The processor is from the 35w family so should be fairly effiecient, I will post the stats when I am done. If the HTPC is a flop, I can beef up the CPU and use the system as a desktop
Memory:
4gig - Kingston KVR800D2N6/2G (2 sticks of 2gig)
This is the stuff that is on the list from Zotac, its 800mhz which should allow for some better performance from the 9300 as it uses the system memory.
4gig for XBMCLive is probably overkill, but if I use it as a desktop I want 4gig.
Case:
I wanted the M10, http://www.origenae.co.kr/en/htpc_m10.htm but it is not available for another 2 months in Australia, and the cost is 5 times as much as a cheap case ($530 AUD = $415 USD). I have settled for the Aywun MW-100. Its not as good looking, it wont do power on from remote, but it is cheap. The case only has a 60W psu, but I am hoping that it will be enough.
CPU Cooler:
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 LP, because the CPU I got didnt come with a cooler, and this was a cheap after market low profile unit.
HDD:
Seagate 2.5" Momentus 5400.3, 80GB, 5400rpm. Its a low power model and cheap. 80gig is huge as I intend to ONLY stream, no local content.
DVD:
none, should save some power and space and I only stream, got the house wired, and 100meg switch.
Remote Control:
Microsoft USB dongle Version 2, with a Yamaha remote (programmed to be an MCE remote)
I will keep you posted on the power at standby, fullHD, off, and also post the xbox details too.

Looking forward to seeing how the build goes. I've been having a similar debate myself, between the ION in a small case or the 9300 in an Antec Micro Fusion 350 precisely for the inbuilt IR and power-on capability.
I think I can get away with a lot cheaper going Zotac N330, Case, RAM and thumdrive.
Hi,
Is anyone using the xbmc MythTV Plug-in viewing MPEG2/ATSC HDTV channels on the Zotac IONITX-A? Just wondering how it's working for 720p/1080i MPEG2 HD streams for playback.
Thanks!
Cheers,

Hi,
sorry to bother with this very noobish question, but yesterday I got my Zotac board and installed jaunty on it.
Everything seems to work just finde, only problem is, that the onboard LAN isn't working (WLAN is ok). Did anybody have the same issue?
Thanks in advance!
Guys,
Im trying to monitor my CPU temp with lm-sensors:

Hi !
You can directly change this settings in XBMC interface in the page where you select digital audio... look at the settings just below and change them :)

Guys...
Now after two weeks with my Zotac ION ITX A board I can say that I'm very happy with it. The only bad thing is the noisy CPU/GPU fan!
Has anybody made some experiences with an other CPU/GPU fan on the Zotac board?
Thanks for help.

How can I do that?
Edit: I guess I have to buy a 12V to 7V (or 5V) adapter.

Hi guys,
I've bought this board too (Rev-A), but I am experiencing problems with Jaunty suspend-to-ram features.
Every time I boot up the platform, it is able to successfully suspend to ram only once. After resuming it up, it won't go to sleep any more: to better describe the process, it seems that it undertakes all the way up to the sleep state, but immediately wakes up without further user interventions.
Does anyone experience similar problems?
Thanks in advance,
M.

I have same problem! Although I don't have Zotac board I'm having exactly the same issue. First suspend works flawlessly, second gets woken up immediately.
I have tried everything I could, but didn't sucessfully solve it, I believe it's some problem with Ubuntu/kernel. I've found many posts about this issue, but none was able to resolve it. :( you can try fix described in thread below, but it didn't work for me, please make a post there if it helped you: http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=45795
Hi,
I have an IONITX-C (single core w/ PSU, it must be V 01 as there is a JP03 jumper) and the ethernet port does not seem to work under XBMC Live (Babylon, 9.04.1). I have sent it back as broken but in the repair shop it functioned flawlessy with Win XP.
Well, that leaves me somewhat confused as noone reported any similar problems with this board.
Another interesting point is that the CPU power managment which also seems to be totally missing: the CPU always runs at 1.6 GHz, the /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ directory does not exists and I could not find any trace of the governor modules (neither in the output of lsmod, nor on the disk itself). Does it work for you?
I have tried booting Ubuntu Live 9.04 also, with the same results (no ethernet, no CPU power management).
Could someone (preferably someone who boots from an USB pendrive) please send me the output of dmesg as a starting point for further detective work?
Same issues here with the suspend/resume. FYI, Atoms do not scale ;)

To dabadab
I just got this board a couple days ago and have done many installations on it. Once with Jaunty live cd and the rest with the jaunty mini. With the Live cd the ethernet did not work at all. all the times with the mini install it worked.
Heres a short guide to install full ubuntu desktop with the mini install.
download Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope" Minimal CD (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD) and use Unetbootin to install it on a usb device.
Restart computer and let it load. Select default.
Starting from the top which is configure keyboard I believe press enter and go through the set up. Keep doing this till the very end. For the most part just stick with the default selections that it gives you unless you feel that you want to select something different.
I think the 3rd or 4th option will get your ethernet working.
Somewhere after disk partitioning you will be given the choice to install updates and after that it will go to a screen listing all the different flavors of ubuntu to install. Just go down all the way to Ubuntu desktop and press the space bar and then press enter. After that just keep going till you finish the installation and when you boot up into ubuntu ethernet will work.
With that all said, I've been up for over 24 hours and am a little tired, but reading through what I wrote it should be understandable hopefully. If not someone else will be able to explain better or better yet tell you how to without reinstalling.
With that all said and done, I'll go into my problem.
I can't get audio over HDMI at all. Nothing anywhere. Video is just fine. I know my TV and cable are both capable of receiving audio over hdmi since it works just fine with my 360. I've tried many different guides with no luck at all. 9.04 and 8.10 which zotac has drivers for. I am unable to test to see if audio over hdmi works in xp or win 7 right now as I do not have a dvd/cd drive for this yet.
So has anyone else with this board been able to get audio over hdmi in jaunty and if so could you please post a guide on how you got it working.
Is it possible for the audio part just to be bad while video still fine??
Thats all I've got for now. Thanks for any help that may come my way.
Hello:
Anybody has tried the new BIOS? http://www.zotac.com/index.php?option=com_docman&task=cat_view&gid=124&Itemid=577
Its, I can´t find any changelogs.
And there is a Linux-Chipsetdriver (Beta) for Ubuntu???
Edit: Downloaded the BIOS.

So...
I got ubuntu up and running on my Zotac-A, XBMC using vdpau, audio over hdmi, only tested 720 so far because for the life of me I can't get an SMB share linked to my XP machine. Etc.
I tried windows7 first, NO GO. This board does NOT have enough power to play 360p hulu or 720p MKVs smoothly. This is just general info for anyone interested in trying windows. I was ready to return the whole setup it was so bad. It's interesting because I've seen people claim that windows 720 works fine, but that must be with a dxva player and not xmbc. That kinda defeats the whole point here.
Ubunutu is ironically the lesser evil (personal distaste for certain unnecessarily complicated linux aspects), but makes the machine purr. Hulu is still garbage unfortunately, maybe someday adobe will get off their asses and gpu accelerate flash.
I haven't tried the new BIOS yet. It's interesting that the display driver zotac recommends is 185.18.10 not .14. No idea what that chipset driver is.... Maybe it fixes / supports the instant wake on suspend issue?
Someone test! :)
FYI, disabling autosuspending on the kernel line via 'usbcore.autosuspend=-1' did the trick here. Using 2.6.31 on my ionitx-a. For more information see http://lwn.net/Articles/253587/
I'm not sure where you wrote usbcore.autosuspend=-1 to. New to nix. Can you clarify?
You have to append it to your kernel loading line in grub (/boot/grub/menu.lst). for example ..
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-<version> root=UUID=<some-uuid> ro quiet splash usbcore.autosuspend=-1

I Guess vdrfan recompiled a new kernel for the Zotac.
vdrfan could you post the kernel configuration for the Zotac?
I'm recompiling the kernel myself at the moment, but not sure if I have included all the options I need.

ok, added to grub, works like a charm! I've spend half of weekend trying to solve this issue, many thanks vdrfan.:grin::cool:
Crap. Now I need to figure out how to install GRUB over the LILO I have now (for some reason grub wouldn't install from the minimal iso).
Crap.
It's just a normal kernel option, it will work with lilo as well.
Btw, i'm running a backported jaunty kernel from https://launchpad.net/~a7x/+archive/kbp . But it should work with any kernel version that performs usb autosuspending.

Hi all, just got my single core ion today, overclocked it to 1.92 ghz and installed 9.04.1 on it and for the most part good... Just a couple minor issues...
A) Nav sounds don't work... I am using hdmi...
B) I followed the instructions for the wake up issue... and it didn't work at first my original boot had this in it "quiet splash xbmc=nodiskmount, tempfs, setvolume, noredir loglevel=0
" I deleted all that and added only the usbcore.autosuspend=-1, and now the resume/suspend works perfect, with the exception of a black x in the middle of the screen... Any ideas? Also, did I need to keep anything I deleted? lol
C) Is there a way to tell what version of the nvidia driver xbmc is currently using? I tried to update the graphics driver to the latest one per this thread http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=55543&highlight=drivers
But I am not sure it worked... the first couple commands wouldn't work, said -bash: deb: command not found... then on the install it said it couldn't find package nvidia-glx-185, so I assume it didn't install :) So any further assistance on that would be great!
D) What all have u guys tweaked to get better performance/usability out of it?
Thanks in advance!

@burritoboy9984, install unclutter to hide the mouse cursor on idle or add the HWCursor option to the device section in xorg.conf (search for it on forums).
I am running it with 2GB of ram and so far everything except 1080p is running flawlessly. Overall the ZOTAC is working as expected, I just need to get rid of the video jitter on 1080p.
Also note the Compact flash on this case is IDE not SATA and the Zotac does not have a IDE interface.
How is everyone else doing on testing this cpu/motherboard?
hey, i am having the same problem w/ 1080p!
720p vids stay at 24fps and 1080p hovers around 21/22 fps.
i was thinking the same thing about the video buffers (as i am running the os from a flash drive).
my videos are stored on a pretty fast sata II drive in the box, which I can actually stream to my desktop over gigE and watch fine in 1080p w/ dxva.
i am running the latest ppa from launchpad.. will try a SVN build tomorrow
*edit i think the SVN build fixed the problem. however the video quality is much worse than with the PPA
So has anyone else with this board been able to get audio over hdmi in jaunty and if so could you please post a guide on how you got it working. Is it possible for the audio part just to be bad while video still fine??

Thanks vdr! any ideas on me deleting the kernel arguments? How about installing the drivers? Should I just reinstall live using an iso with the latest drivers? How about the nav sounds?
Thanks again!
-Erik
About Nav sounds,
Mine didn't work at first. They do now, and I have no idea what I did. I'm using audio over hdmi, I think the bios is set to Internal Codec Only. I think that all the IEC's are muted except for -1. And, in xmbc I have hdmi/hdmi for the two audio settings.
I'm using an Onkyo 705 receiver that loves to delay start the audio from a new digital source (if you have that problem you'll know what I'm talking about). Oh, and I'm using the bubbles sounds.
I don't think I'll be any more help as I have no idea what I did to get it to work.
If it's working without those options, keep it :) To get rid of that nav sounds issue you should search the forums for .asoundrc, i think this was covered a lot times now (not sure what exactly to do as i don't use nav sounds).
Oh yea.... I also did the .asoundrc thing. Forgot about that.
Run the following command to fix your Navigation Sound issues
/usr/bin/iecset audio on
I am struggling to get audio working through optical on this motherboard. I have tried everything I can think of with no joy. I am wondering if my optical connection on the motherboard is actually working. If I connect an optical lead I do not see the red optical light coming through the cable like I would expect. Can anyone confirm that I should be seeing the red optical light with just the cable connected? Thanks in advance for any help.

just wanted to chime my 2 cents in since i just built my system yesterday (had to wait over a month for amazon to get them in stock)
Zotac ION A-U board, M350 case, 2GB PC6400 Ram 4.4.4.12 @2.1 v. I've tried running the atom at 2.06 Ghz, but it doesn't seem to make a big difference. I'm also using the 9.04.1 live disk installed on a 5400Rpm hard drive in the case.
Much like the rest of you, I have no issues with <=720p. using the plug:hdmi / hdmi settings in audio config, i can get audio over hdmi no problem. my only problem is 1080p videos. anything about around 9-11Mb/sec video starts to stutter a little bit. One thing thats odd though, is that at some points where it's 22Mbps, it plays fine (watching transformers now) I know almost nothing about unix so i don't know how to install new builds short of a clean install. The jitter is only once in a while, during heavy motion scenes when the bitrate goes up. I am streaming the videos across a gigabit network from my NAS, but i know its not a problem because XBMC on my windows desktop plays them without a problem, and my sustained transfer rate is around 40-50MB/sec, so no issue there.
My thought is that either the drivers for the chipset/video card need to be updated, or maybe XBMC needs to be optimized...i don't know what else it could be. If people are able to play killa sample, it should take these 9-15Mbps videos no sweat. (cpu usage stays below 30%)
Anyone with a zotac that have no issues playing 1080p care to share your entire north/south bridge setup as well? I'm totally confused by half the options in there. I love my zotac, but I'd really like to have smooth 1080p on my tv at all times.
Thanks for any tips anyone comes up with.
Actually one last thing: is there some way to change the buffers used like you could in the windows version? that might solve the 1080p issue, but i really dont know.

Hate to tell you, but you're going to have to learn how to upgrade. There's a thread in the linux subforums called 'how to upgrade xbmc live' or something. I also, have no linux experience. I followed a combination of that and the XBMCBuntu guide, and got everything updated after a few tries.
You definitely need to upgrade. 9.4.01 does not run smoothly. You'll need to upgrade XBMC, and also the NVidia drivers.

My tips for ION success
1> Install xbmc from Nvidia upgraded XBMC Live 9.04.1 xbmc.zip link posted on item 3 here: (http://www.xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=53888)
2> Add xorg to config folder (http://pastebin.com/f1a5d171c)
2.5> Putty this before starting step 3> sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 64234534
3> Upgrade xbmc (http://xbmc.org/forum/showpost.php?p=354290&postcount=3)
4> Change video render method to VDPAU and enable adjust refresh rate in XBMC Settings, Video, Video Player...

hey wanted to post an update. I was reading around about using dual channel instead of single channel memory, so i added a 2nd stick of 2GB ram to my system, and 1080p videos seem to play perfect now. I was reading somewhere that systems that rely on integrated graphics (IGP) rely more on memory bandwidth than systems with addon cards, and it seems to support the theory. I know it wasn't a problem of quantity of memory, because with 2GB before, I was only using about 1gb of it. I watched a 1080p copy of watchmen tonight and there were no issues at all. I'll try it on transformers tomorrow night, which i was watching before and had some stuttering. Just thought I'd post as an FYI, that it does seem to help.

FYI, disabling autosuspending on the kernel line via
'usbcore.autosuspend=-1' did the trick here. Using 2.6.31 on my ionitx-a. For more
information see http://lwn.net/Articles/253587/
Thanks vdrfan!!! Did the trick here as well (plain jaunty installation, with the standard kernel
2.6.28-13-generic). Now I have another small problem: I have a MCE USB remote receiver and
remote controller. I successfully take my platform to the S3 state by pressing the power button on my
remote, but I cannot make it wake-up through the same button. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
You have to enable it in /proc/acpi/wakeup. See http://lars.werner.no/?p=177 (thanks!) for more information.

Had you tried changing the video memory allocation in the bios from 256mb to 512mb? That is all I had to do on my Asrock Ion 330, I can play 1080p fine. (Guess might be a bit late now you have 4gb installed!)

If your board is a V1.00 it will not wake from usb because on sleep the power to usb is cut. Its a known issue. A revision of the hardware adds a jumper to enable usb 5v power on sleep.

I have no problems at all trying to learn, I'm doing so day by day, and I have no qualms about getting my hands dirty. The only thing is that for those of us that don't know anything about linux, we need a little more direction with step by stem proceedures. hell I tried to download and compile a new version of XBMC from the source, but i ran into some trouble, and of course couldn't fix it.
After upgrading to dual channel ram, my 1080ps seem to run find now, but I'd still like to get the latest SVN as Aeon and other skins aren't working. I'll try geekzilla's 4 steps when i get home tonight to see if I can upgrade that way....seeing as how a 9.04.2 or whatever release isn't going to come any time soon.

I'm in the same boat as you. I had never used Linux until about 2 weeks ago, and I haven't spent a lot of time learning it. As I mentioned, I followed a guide in the linux forums. I was nice enough to search for it for you:

I did change the video ram to 512, but even with that, i would get a little jittering maybe once or twice every 30-45 seconds...it wasn't SUPER noticeable, but it was just enough to make you start to get irritated. it seems to be fine now, but i'd still like a definitive how to on how to get xbmc live updated, as two of the ways mentioned don't seem to work right, and the most recent svn is like 1500 builds above the xbm live 9.04.1 image, plus there are new nvidia drivers out too.

I actually was aware of this problem: I'm working with a newer revision (the jumper is there).
You have to enable it in /proc/acpi/wakeup. See http://lars.werner.no/?p=177 (thanks!) for more information.
Ok, I've gone through this process, but I probably miss something. In order to be sure, I loaded the "optimal default" values within the bios of the ITX-A, but it is still in "non-working" conditions.

Had a similar issue while enabling all USB devices to wake-up from S4. Try to enable it just for the pci-id that belongs to your remote.
Can't make it work. Tried enabling just one at a time. By the way, the suspend-wakeup procedure should work soon after the echo command, with no further actions, right?
I'm asking this because the /proc/acpi/wakeup gets back to its original contents (with both USB devices disabled) upon each reboot.
Strange, maybe your device is reporting weird stuff on the usb port. Wake-on keyboard works for you?
Yes, gets reverted to disabled on reboot so you will have to stick it to rc.local or any other init script to enable it.

Yes, when it does not wake up through remote buttons, I normally wake it up through either a ps keyboard or a usb mouse button pressure.

Ok, it was just to be sure.
Anyway, thanks for your assistance!
Edit: I've just noticed that when it goes to sleep, the red light of the receiver turns off. The USB mouse I'm using to wake it up has got a blue led indicating when it's powered and it turns off as well.
I actually don't understand if it may be a power problem: maybe, when in S3 state, USB host power is not sufficient to let the receiver parse IR messages. Do you think it's possible?

Just figured I would post the steps I made to get my install like I wanted it... Zotac ion with an mce receiver :) Just thought I would add, I am a complete newbie when it comes to linux :) Most of this is taken from guides other people have posted, just figured I would share what worked for me... I used to iso found here (http://www.fusedimages.com/xbmc.zip).
sudo pico /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xbmc.org.list
Make sure all current lines have a # before them, if they don't, then add one. Then add the following lines
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-svn/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-svn/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
press ctrl X then press Y then hit enter
Then run the following, when prompted, press yes
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 64234534
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install xbmc
sudo reboot
sudo pico /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Scroll down to Section ' "Device" '
add ' Option "HWCursor" "False" ' under the ' VendorName ' entry
press ctrl X then press Y then hit enter
sudo pico /home/xbmc/.asoundrc
Should be a blank file, add in the following
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave {
pcm "hdmi"
}
}
press ctrl X then press Y then hit enter
sudo pico /boot/grub/menu.lst
You will see title ' XBMCLive ', below that it says ' kernel /vmlinuz root=UUID=(random numbers here) ' go to that line and press the end key and add ' usbcore.autosuspend=-1 '
press ctrl X then press Y then hit enter
sudo reboot
Now once xbmc boots, make sure you go into Settings -> Video -> Player -> Change render method to VDPAU and check adjust frame rate
then go to Settings -> System -> Hardware and change the shutdown function to Suspend
then while still in System, go to Audio Hardware and change the Audio output to Digital (If you have a Receiever that is capable of the below options, check them, if not then leave them)
In the Audio output device, type hdmi. And in the Passthrough output device type hdmi
Now you should have everything working... Nav sounds, check... Sleep/Wake Up from remote, check... No ugly cursor when it wakes up, check... Updated to latest svn, check :)

burritoboy9984 : great tutorial !! tomorrow i'm building my Zotac htpc. Already done research on forum how to set up perfect XBMC experience.
Using your guide will simply save a looot of hours for people with no linux exp. (like me).
Thank you ;)
finally got a zotac ion a yesterday :)
installed xbmc live on an old 20gb xbox360 hdd and did all steps posted by burritoboy9984.
now everything works fine except 1080p 24hz or 23.976hz!
the zotac is connected via hdmi with a Samsung B650 LCD TV.

To get 24hz you need to add this to xorg.conf under the screen section
Option "DynamicTwinView" "False"
hey all, im struggeling with the same problem. zotac with a samsung le46m86bd ... ill get perfect 1920x1080@60 but the autochange to different frequencies wouldn't work. but i maybe found some usefull information on how to extract the edid for the xorg.conf. ill get to it when im @home again .....
somehow this seems to be a problem for a lot of guys ... incorrect edid info for x!? sucks :(
besides that its great :)
I used the script from this thread:
http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=55282
and everything works perfect.
In the code is something:
## --[ ENABLE 1080p 24Hz]------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
sed -i '50i\ Option "DynamicTwinView" "False"' /etc/X11/xorg.conf
## --[ Disable Composite for better H264 acceleration ]------------------------------------------------------
sed -i '30i\Section "Extensions"' /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sed -i '31i\ Option "Composite" "Disable"' /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sed -i '32i\EndSection' /etc/X11/xorg.conf
maybe this helps?
i also tried with this settings ... is it working on your side with vdpau and autorefresh sync rate? which display are you usin?
I have a Samsung A656 32" and it works fine.
Edit: I remember there was a problem with ur TV in general. Have a look at www.hifi-forum.de

Hey All,
I picked up one of these boards along with a M350 case for a full ubuntu XBMC machine. I'm new to linux, and still struggling to decipher what all of these commands actually mean, but that's beside the point.
I am having no problem getting Wifi working, except it will only connect to my g network, which is saddled by my roomates ancient laptops with b wireless cards. It has no problem seeing the n network, but for some reason refuses to connect to it.
Are there updated drivers I need to install in order to get the card to connect?
finally i got 24p (24.000hz) working with the samsung b650
had to add these lines to xorg.conf:
Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI" "True"
Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "False"
Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes, NoMaxPClkCheck, NoEdidMaxPClkCheck, AllowNon60HzDFPModes"
Option "DynamicTwinView" "False"
mhh..for now..just 23.976hz missing =)
any idea why i cant select the modeline resolutions within xbmc??

when i set the system to hibernate-state (out of fullscreen xbmc) and wake it again, everything is fine.
but when i try it a second time, xbmc is gone.
it "boots" into the desktop.
any ideas on this?
booting from hibernate takes just 12 seconds.
Question:
Is it normal that I have only 3072MB RAM in Bios (Not OS).
512 for VRAM. Does he take it twice? I mean it doesn´t matter, because is more then enough, but I would like to know, what my board is doing.
Edit:
Answer: After searching a while: It seems to be an ION-Chipset problem as the POV Boards have the same problem and both can only address 3,5GB RAM.

Hi All, I'm in need of some help. I'm getting an error message when running sudo apt-get upgrade. I've followed all the directions in burritoboy's post but can't seem to get past the upgrade. Reason for me doing this is I can't get audio via HDMI.
Here is the error message....

Hi Kafwak,
I was suffering from teh same issue - drove me nuts as I didn't want to get this setup on an HDD...
This is what I ended up doing to get the latest SVN XBMC (for the MediaStream Redux skin).
I ran the following commands and it worked Flawlessly (I can now run the last two whenever I want to update to the latest SVN PPA).
sudo mkdir /boot
sudo mkdir /var/log/apt
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 64234534
sudo sed -i -e "s/\/team-xbmc\//\/team-xbmc-svn\//" /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xbmc.org.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
I know this isn't the best solution, but it allows me to run without a HDD, plus use the bleeding edge releases.
Hope this helps.
-Markus
ill get perfect 1920x1080@60 but the autochange to different frequencies wouldn't work.
Are you saying that xbmc will autochange to 1080p @24hz, or 720p/576i etc., based on the resolution of the video being played? I know the auto resolution worked on the xbox, but I didn't think it worked in Linux. I hope I was wrong.

To get around this, I created the 'boot' directory, ran the command that the terminal will tell you to if you try to do anything after that error (sudo dpkg --configure somthing). Then I rebuilt the kernel and it worked. I don't know what it did, because I know nothing of linux, but it worked.
I'm having problems editing my xorg.conf file. Anytime I add in any of those options and save the file, it forces Ubuntu into low graphics mode and I can't seem to recover it.
I'm starting on a fresh Ubuntu install with the latest 185.18.36 NVIDIA drivers installed. How do I properly edit the xorg.conf file so it doesn't crash?
Edit: Also I'm running this through a Yamaha RX-V661 receiver and while the menu's are perfectly bright and correctly sized, when I play movies it defaults to 1080i and all sorts of stretching occurs and the movies are all dark. :(

Thanks to all the excellent info on this thread, I have xbmc working on my zotac *almost* flawlessly. However, I have hit a snag with suspend / resume and lirc and would love some help if possible.
I am running
A minimal install of jaunty (2.6.28-15-generic)
The latest xbmc SVN
My BIOS is set to optimal settings
Without lic installed, suspend (STR) and resume work perfectly. Using a USB keyboard I can sleep the system (selecting "Suspend" in xbmc) and then wake it up by pressing a key on the keyboard
When I install lirc, however, I get the following when trying the exact same process (using a keyboard and NOT the remote so as to keep things comparable):
Suspend seems to work fine. Select "suspend" in XBMC and the system immediately goes to sleep.
However, when I try to resume I get the following displayed on the screen:
lirc_dev: lirc_register_plugin: minor (0) just registered!
PANIC: double fault, gdt at c1e12000 [255 bytes]
double fault, tss at c1e18280
eip=f7c729a6, esp=ffa8c238
eax=f7c76c08, ebx=fffffe00, ecx=ffa8c250, edx=f7c76ba0
esi=f7c76ba0, edi=bffbabf4
* Stopping remote control daemon(s): LIRC
Now when I uninstall lirc, everything goes back to working well so I assume this is a problem with lirc but any help from the community would be appreciated.

What kind of IR receiver do you have? Does the computer start again or is that printed on the screen then the system is dead?
You could try shutting down LIRC before suspending (/etc/apm/suspend.d) and then re-start it on resume (..resume.d).

The .asoundrc provided does not fix the crossfading issue.
(crossfading causes 'unable to initialize audio hardware)
use this .asoundrc instead.

I am having a very frustrating time with Suspend on my latest rev Zotac. In XBMC, I can press the power button on my MCE remote and the system goes immediately into Suspend. I then can press the power button on my MCE remote and it resumes. However, if I press the power button on my MCE remote again, it will not suspend. The screen will go black, power button LED will blink and then XBMC will reappear on the screen. It is instantly resuming from suspend. This happens on all subsequent attempts until I reboot. After a reboot, the first Suspend works then all subsequent don't work. I tried adding:
usbcore.autosuspend=-1 to grub, but then I get the opposite problem. I can suspend the system, but when I press the power button on my MCE remote the PC turns on for about 5 seconds and then turns off. Only pressing the power button on the case resumes it from suspend.
Anyone have Suspend/Resume working using a remote? If so, what did you do?

I was wondering if there was any adapter i can buy for this board that will do component composite or svideo. I've seen dvi=>component cables before....would something like that work for this board?
The reason i ask is i'm building a system for my dad who doesn't have an hdtv yet (he'll be getting one soon)
His tv DOES have component inputs, as well as svideo.
If anyone knows please let me know
Having problems with suspend... Have Zotac Ion with Ubuntu 2.6.28.
I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst with nano
nano /boot/grub/menu.lst
and added the bold text
title Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-11-generic
uuid b37c96fb-8fff-469d-922e-8b8a7f87d5d0
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-11-generic root=UUID=b37c96fb-8fff-469d-922e-8b8a7f87d5d0 ro quiet splash usbcore.autosuspend=-1
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.28-11-generic
quiet
saved, no problems (have writing permission).
After reboot: Still the same problem: when i select suspend in ubuntu, the screen goes black, harddisk powers down, but the cpu fan keeps spinning, and the system boots up again in 3 seconds. The /boot/grub/menu.lst still contains "usbcore.autosuspend=-1".
Please help me, I'm new to linux!
please post the following

which nvidia driver are you using?
i had a same issue with the newest nvidia 190.x drivers and the nvidia driver was refusing to enter suspend mode..
is there a usb device present that is triggering the resume instantaneously?

The two other logs are too long to post.
Using newest nvidia (190).
I unplug the usb-keyboard right when i've pushed suspend (don't think this is the problem).
Also, found an error elsewhere: PM device 03.5 failed to suspend: error -1, device 03.5 is Nvidia MCP79...
Thanks!
NEWS: I uninstalled the new (190x) driver and installed the old 185x driver. It all works now!! :)
Ok, I've connected my Zotac to my lcd-tv (samsung 32") through HDMI.
In ubuntu the screen seems zoomed in (cannot see top/bottom 5%). I've tried various settings on my tv, nothing works. (I can see the whole of the bios-screen, so i think it is the nvidia driver). How can I get rid of this overscan in ubuntu?
(In XBMC I can calibrate the image correctly to my lcd-tv...)

man, i've been fighting with this thing all night.
I just can't seem to get Xorg to work. The nvidia driver via the website installs fine but when i try to start x i keep getting errors like this:
waiting for X server to shut down ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log
when i try to use Xorg -configure to create a valid xorg config (since the nvidia util dind't give me one) i get this:
Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices.
Configuration failed.
ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log
i'm going insane here, i've configure this on at least 5 other boxes without EVERY having a problem.
Thanks for any help.
finally i got 24p (24.000hz) working with the samsung b650
had to add these lines to xorg.conf:
mhh..for now..just 23.976hz missing =)
any idea why i cant select the modeline resolutions within xbmc??
complete xorg.conf
I did try that but I'm still having problems with refresh rates! :(
I have a full Ubuntu Desktop with XBMC stable release running on an Asrock ION 330 but I do have one major problem left which is bugging me and it's the final thing I'd like to resolve before I can fully enjoy my system.
Right before copy-pasting stuff from your xorg.conf into mine I was having problem with 24p material. Obvious motion judder with camera panning scenes. When I added the "DynamicTwinView" "False" option into my xorg.conf and enabled refresh rates, problems seemed to be solved but the screen was schifted into the upper-left corner of my TV. So I was seeing half of the picture.
I then found your post and I copied parts of your xorg.conf into now mine looks like this:

I have no idea what the "modeline" lines in this file mean but apparently they solved the 24p problem. My XBMC menu is also displayed in 24Hz since the appearance settings tell me the resolution is 1920x1080@24hz. I'd rather see this at a higher refresh rate but I don't really care much about this a long as my movies work correctly.
BUT! (you know this was coming... ;-))
When I try to play regular DVD ISO (PAL) files, XBMC crashed back to the Ubuntu login screen. After XBMC automatically restarted the DVD ISO will play but is shown in 50Hz! Which give really horrible motion judder!
The crash only happens once, but after playing another HD file it reoccurs.
Please give me some advice, I really don't have a clue what to do next...
I had the same problem, my Zotac-A would sleep properly the first time, but every other time it would wake right back up. I found the solution here in the forums (dont have a link) but I copied and pasted the info to a file for later on:
To fix power button suspend problem, copy the menu.lst file from this directory to /boot/grub/menu.lst
quote:
http://blog.xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=58350
flighttothemoon - I dont know what the issue is exactly, with mine, I just went to System Settings and set the shutdown funtion to Suspend, and I can suspend mine with the remote.
nugentgl - I had to edit the grub menu file and add "usbcore.autosuspend=-1" to the end of the first 'kernel' line...
ex.
title XBMCLive
kernel /vmlinuz... usbcore.autosuspend=-1
So, either get into a terminal screen (CTRL+ALT+F2) or through putty.exe...
Code:
sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst
then add the necessary "usbcore.autosuspend=-1" to the end of the 'kernel' line and reboot.
... thats what I did, and it worked great

I applied the boot option usbcore.autoyadayadayada and it works great. I can sleep/resume fine using my MCE remote.
However when it's sleeping/suspended it randomly wakes up, sometimes after a few minutes sometimes a few hours.
It's in my bedroom and connects to the network via wifi.
I have disabled all ACPI wake events in the BIOS i.e. PXE, WOL etc...
My /proc/acpi/wakeup is set to all disabled except for the power button.
I have NO usb devices connected to it other than my MCE remote IR receiver.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.0.4 + updates.
Can anyone else confirm there isn't a ghost in my bedroom turning it on each time in an attempt to freak me and my wife out lol???
BTW Love this board + Xbmc & VDPAU

I have no problem with suspend, it's working great. Hibernate doesnt' seem to work...
Also, is there a way to make the computer power on from the ir reciever (not from suspend)
I notice if i press the power button that it DOES activate the IR receiver's light.

Why do you want to use hibernate? Resume from hibernate takes way longer than resume from suspend.

The same sort of question could be asked of anyone who wanted to use hibernate. If it wasn't useful for some situations i probably wouldn't care but the fact is, it is useful.
It DOES take longer to resume from hibernate BUT it doesn't take AS long as booting from an off position. Also, some computers can hibernate one OS and then boot another, then hibernate THAT os and switch back to the first. If the ionitx has this sort of "advanced hibernate" then it would be VERY useful for people who want to have a minimal install for xbmc and another install for web browsing.
I don't want to ask again and again same question but most of the questions about XBMC+Linux based.
So, I want to buy a ZOTAC ION 330 and I'm thinking to install Windows Xp. But can I use XBMC without any problem? I have been heard that there is some Intreface problems at XBMC+Windows.
Is this correct?
Thanks a lot.

you will get much better performance with linux.
with windows xp i doubt you'll get high bitrate 1080p without issue. This is why most people go with linux.
Honestly, it's not that hard to get it working with linux, theres a few GREAT threads out there including this one which can help with that, but if you must have windows for some ungodly reason, it will work, but not nearly as well.
one more dual-channel question:
i have installed 2 gig (1 in each slot) and raised the sharde memory for the ion chip to 512MB.
i think it is running in dualchannel mode...
but where can i see something like "you are running in dual channel moder"?

Thanks wonslug,
I can not change my OS, because of my LCD TV makes 1:1 pikselmapping only at Windows XP. (Even not vista and Seven)
So I can use only Windows XP, I'm waiting for a confirmation. Can I use XBMC under Windows XP and ION N330 without any slowless problem?

i very much doubt that.
You might have to mess with some xorg settings some but i can't believe it would work in xp and not work in linux.4
and just like i said before
if you want to use it for SD content, you can
if you want to use it for 720p content, you can (for most anyways)
for 1080 you'd be pushing it

I can use for 1:1 Pikselmapping with 1360X768 60 Hz Progressive Scan and CVT Time.
Here is my message under official nvidia forum:
Hello,
My Card is 9800 GT and my LCD TV is Toshiba AV500.
In XP:
I'm adding a custom resolution 1360*768 and timing CVT. (progressive 60hz). Almost every game work 1360*768 with 1:1 Pixel mapping and Great Quality. There is not any problem, everything works very well
In Windows 7:
I'm adding a custom resolution 1360*768 and timing CVT. (progressive 60hz). There is not any problem with my LCD TV. 1:1 Pixel mapping ok, I can use my LCD Tv as regular PC monitor, I can watch HD films with 1:1 Pixel mapping with 1360*768.
Life is very well, since the games.
About 5 months, I'm trying to fix this stupid problem. In Windows 7, when I start any fullscreen game (doesn't matter) with 1360*768 I can play only in window mode. If I click the maximize button there is always an error message "this resolution not supported by bla bla"
or,
I'm changing the resolution of game to 1360x768 and some games wants to restart itself. After restart the games converting resolution except 1360*768 and without 1360*768 the games seems blurry, aliasing, darker or worse. (no 1:1 pixelmapping)
But,
related game working in XP with fullscreen without any window, with 1360*768 and 1:1 Pixel mapping.
What is the difference Windows Xp and Windows 7. I have many many drivers already tried, I changed my TV's EDID information, I did many many tricks. I'm getting crazy. Please help, How can I fix this problem without XP install.
Thank you very much for your help and sorry for my poor English.
Here is the address: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=109225
I couldn't a solution except to use Windows XP. 720p is only resolution that I can use with my LCDTV but the texts are not sharp. This tv makes 1:1 only with 1360*768.
I will try today again to fix problem with XBMC Live Cd. But I haven't any hope.
Edit: XBMC not work very well under Windows 7, I think the Interface of this program directx or OpenGL

I dont know about any "Interface problems under windows" so i guess this should be fixed.
720p content will all play just fine under Windows, DXVA/VDPAU is only needed for high bitrate 1080p content.
I tested some "normal" 1080p content under XBMC using the CPU and it also played just fine, but ofc the 1080p "killa sample" will start stuttering after 5 seconds using just the cpu.
XBMC/ffmpeg still isnt as good as CoreAVC CPU wise under Windows, so u can still setup XBMC with a external player like MPC-HC using DXVA or CoreAVC as decoder.
Look here for guides:
http://nunnally.ahmygoddess.net/watching-h264-videos-using-dxva/
http://nunnally.ahmygoddess.net/watching-h264-videos-using-compute-unified-device-architecture-cuda/
While VDPAU under linux should work out of the box, setting things up under windows is not this hard.
So im still happy with XBMC under WindowsXP (without VDAPU), since i dont play high bitrate 1080p content.
I still hope some day we also get working DXVA :)
PS: As a side note, the best visual quality seems tobe achieved using MadVR (Mad video renderer) under windows, but "best" is normally not visible for most users.
Also make sure hyperthreading is enabled in the bios and with active "normal" cooling the zotac can be overclocked to 2.0GHz even without vcore changes, for a solid speed boost.

can't someone say something to this?
isn't there a short info in bios-post while booting?
just something...

Cpu-Z will show if the memory is running in "dual" mode, under the memory tab. I guess "dual" + "symetric" are the words they use for this.
PS: Why is this important? For a HTPC+XBMC, dual/single or DDR1-3 make no difference for a media pc.
thx for your answer.
the reason is just, because i have read it in the forum.
the question "are you running in dualchannel-mode" happens to be seen in many video-stuttering related threads.

(In XBMC I can calibrate the image correctly to my lcd-tv...)
in tv menu, go to advance option (image) or something similar and set adapt to display and not 16:9 (default)
I used XBMC Windows. There I used the "uitzending gemist" script.
At the moment I am using XBMC live. I have no idea how to use scripts while using XBMC live. Can somebody help.
Thanx
Hi,
I installed xbmc stable babylon on xubuntu 9.04.
When I want to start a video, nothing appens !!!
If I relaunch video more times, I get an error message about "queue list error"
I enabled debug mode, but din't find log file anywhere.
It's very strange.
No errors, but no videos neither !!!
Please help.
(I tried upgrade to xbmc 9.11 alpha and/or nvidia 190, enabled/disabled vdapu)

has anyone had any luck getting a minimal xbmc install working on karmic on this board?
I tried and for some reason all i got was a super tiny prompt.
Works fine with jaunty. I know that the ttys were moved to /etc/init/ but is there anything else that's different for a minimal install?

PANIC: double fault, gdt at c1e12000 [255 bytes]
double fault, tss at c1e18280
eip=f7c729a6, esp=ffa8c238
eax=f7c76c08, ebx=fffffe00, ecx=ffa8c250, edx=f7c76ba0
esi=f7c76ba0, edi=bffbabf4
* Stopping remote control daemon(s): LIRC
Now when I uninstall lirc, everything goes back to working well so I assume this is a problem with lirc but any help from the community would be appreciated.
Can anyone help with this? I, along with few others, are also having this issue:

hrm, weird. I'm not having a problem with resume working...I'd LIKE figure out a way to make the power button power the machine up from the OFF state but resume works fine for me.
I do know that the latest svn doesn't NEED lirc....check into that maybe.

I'm running 9.11 Alpha 1 R24283. Do you know if this version is new enough to not require LIRC?
Also it's possibley not the best place to aks but can you help with uninstalling LIRC? I've browsed (i think) to the location of LIRC but when I can't get the following command to do anything:
sudo make uninstall lirc
Thanks in advance.

well on ubuntu i didn't compile lirc from source, i just used apt-get
but even if you couldn't DELETE lirc completely, you should have NO PROBLEM keeping it from starting up
