Transparency! - A Fanart Skin (updated to v0.27 on 2009-06-25)

For me, the beauty of PM3.HD has always been the fanart view modes. Some time ago i was thinking, why not display the fanart fullscreen instead of on just a part of it.
After modifying some xml files, the result turned out so well i got the idea of doing the same for the other view modes as well.
And before i knew it, i was doing an almost complete redesign of the PM3.HD skin.

I've removed as much textures as possible to create more room for fanart and replaced the rest of the textures with transparent ones, to give it a clean look and again...to show more of the fanart.

Along the way, i've implemented a lot of mods found elsewhere on this forum, a short list (credits where credit's due):

Most of these mods can be disabled / enabled through the skin settings, in fact the Home Menu is fully customizable, you can add or remove every item there.

A few more tweaks i've implemented along the way:
- Fanart in Filemode
- Fanart for Games
- 3D Coverflow view for Artists and Songs
- Fanart view for Songs
- Icon view for Albums (similar to DVD Thumb view)
- Moved System Info to the Settings section instead of Shutdown Menu
- Replaced the weird 'octopus-like' OSD with a regular Dialog Menu
- Fully hide the Left Menu on all pages, it slides in when needed

So finally, a download link. Everything mentioned above is included (weather fanart package, media flags, genre icons, etc..) and enabled by default,

This is an amazing skin! I am not sure if the is a feature of the new XBMC build but the scrolling through movies/tv shows is extremely smooth. Run amazing on AppleTV. There use to be a delay when scrolling in library mode, especially with fan art enabled.

I've noticed this mod isn't compatible for the xbox platform as i get corrupted textures. When using it on windows all seems well.

Would love to use it on the xbox, as i think this will run very smooth on the old machine. Any ideas to get it to work?

I'm getting this as well.
Extracted the textures and then compressed them again.
Less errors but still can't load a movie or TV section without corruption though home screen and settings work better after recompressing.

Hope someone has a fix cause this looks amazing.

This mod is excellent and get's high rating's in the all important wife acceptance factor. :)

I have one problem concerning fan art in file mode though.

In my TV directory I use the scrapper to get the show info, fanart, and banners and it works beautifully. My problem is in the movies directory where I use media companion to gather the info, it does not show the fanart. If I browse for it, it shows the current fanart being used as the correct one and I can navigate to the appropriate folder and choose it manually, but it won't show up for some reason.

Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated as this looks like my new skin of choice.

edit: Actually I am getting the fanart in the movies directory but it is only showing up once in side the folder. It looks linked to the video file rather than the folder. (I must be doing something wrong I just can't figure it out, sorry).

Great skin here Ronie!

I love the transparent look and I feel just like you when the only views I like are focused on fanart. I noticed you used the background="true" and I did see a difference on my htpc.

A few things I noticed were a small glitch in the fanart for songs. I am guessing it is because it is often loading the same image mulitiple times for artists with several songs. This is the reason I haven't been using it myself. Any suggestion on a solution, because I think it is a great feature.

I also noticed from your screenshots you had the tv network on the episode level, but it did not show for me when I tried it out. I wasn't aware it was available beyond the tv show lever....can you confirm? Or is it set to be visible based off of another factor such as 720p will show ABC HD?

I'm sorry, but since i don't have an XBOX it would be pretty difficult for me to come up with a fix. I hope someone will figure out the problem.
I've read in some other thread the XBOX has problems with several HD skins because of the limited amount of memory available.

Nice, at least that's a start. Maybe replacing all the default backgrounds with low res ones would make things better ? Just a wild guess.

That's correct, showing fanart for songs (and when browsing the library by albums) is not supported by XBMC, so i just used a 'hack' to read fanart image directly from the harddisk instead of using the cached ones.
Since loading the fanart from the harddisk will take some time, the default background image will show for a small amount of time when the fanart transitions from one image to the other.

Guess i'll make a feature request on trac for proper fanart support for songs (and albums).

btw. the same will happen when you browse your music collection in file mode.

Network flags are available at episode level (assuming you're using MIP to store the network info in the <director> field of the episode .nfo files). The HD network flags will indeed only show if 720p or 1080p info is available:

<visible>substring(listitem.director,netabc) + [substring(listitem.director,720) | substring(listitem.director,1080)]</visible>
But it should show the default ABC logo, if the 720/1080 info is not available.

Can't reproduce it, it's working just fine at my end, so let's start with the basics...
Although you're using filemode you'll have to scan your movies to the library first, so XBMC picks up the fanart.
If you've added the fanart after scanning the movies to the library, you'll have to remove them from the library and scan them again.

Also can you give me some insight in your directory structure?

Guess i don't know where to draw the line between MOD and New Skin.
I mean, how many lines of code does one have to change? :-)

I found that when I compressed the new textures for PM3.5 they worked great on my PC but not the xbox.

I got by this by compressing it with XPR Xpress at the MAX level settings with no protection.

After that, no problems on either platform. So you may want to try that.

Thanx for the tip, it seems like XPR Xpress is only available for the XBOX platform right?
If there's anything i can do to make it work out of the box for XBOX users, let me know.

Yes Please if someone could put the an xbox friendly version of this skin would be great, since this skin looks fantastic. This and Operation skins are the best. Both should concentrate on Tv Shows and Music a Bit more and add views. the more the merier.

First I have scanned the movies directory into library with the fanart inside the folder. I have also deleted the Userdata folder and started from scratch again, with the same results. the directory structure is as follows

Nope, i gave it a shot but i need at least something like MusicPlayer.FolderPath or MusicPlayer.Path to be available to the skin, but such labels don't exist.

Hi ronie very nice work on this mod. i was doubtful i would like it but it's very good.
And yes the textures were corrupt on xbox, but i have managed to fix that and i plan to make a few minor alterations like adding in the original animated buttons for the on off bar.
And change a few backdrops more to my taste but overall it's extremly good.
As of now it's my default xbox skin:):)

Can you post a link for download when you fix the Transperancy Skin for XBOX. And your Aeon skin the only reason i dont use it is because the Tv shows Don't use wide thumbs, if you can fix that, like the PM3 Operation did (choose between wide or narrow thumbs for tv shows) it would be great.

I am not currently doing a port of pm3hd or any other variant at least not until i have finished With Auriga and that will take about a week to finish off then i will do some tinkering
with all the variants of pm3hd as they all have good points and bad points in my honest oppinion and i intend to take swipe bits from all to make one unique skin but i will use this transparency mod as a starting point as it's the best of them all, but even then i will only release it if ronie has no objections as it is his work at the end of the day. only then will i release it ok

Most likely your XBMC build is to old. Due to recent changes in the XBMC code, you'll need at least r20258 for this skin to work properly.
The backgrounds for the home menu are stored in ..\XBMC\skin\PM3.HD Transparency\backgrounds

I've been fairly busy with this mod over the past 2 months, so please forgive me as i'm not quite up to date with all the recent changes in Aeon and The Operation.
If you could post a screenshot of this 'Aeon banner' i'll check it out. I'm always open to suggestions, so if i like it, i'll put it on my to-do list.

Thought that might be a problem so reinstalled latest xbmc 9.04.1 latest build for download but still the same prob. Looked in backgrounds folder all images are there just not working?:shocked:

Overall you have done an impressive job on this skin, but theres always room for improvement but for xbox i would resize most of the large images to save on memory and to alter the transparency of the panel for the info in the lower part of the screen as it's difficult to read with some fanart so it needs to be a little darker for me also i will change some of the default backdrops as we all have difering tastes. i would also like to change the poster frame for something plainer other than that it's pretty perfect as it is just tweaks no major changes oh and i will overhaul the media flags as few are a little blury i have loads left from doing the auriga mod so i will be adding and removing some once i get to grips with the code for it. if it's ok with you i will post it in here as a xbox version as opposed to a replacement for yours. it will save me some work as i have 4 other threads to maintain i don't really want another, and keep up the great work your doing:)

Have you tried looking in the skin settings as you can set up your backgrounds in there, also how did you get that view type the one with the 300 and bugs life fanart?
And i can't see anything wrong from your screen shots?

Thought that might be a problem so reinstalled latest xbmc 9.04.1 latest build for download but still the same prob. Looked in backgrounds folder all images are there just not working?:shocked:

9.04.1 is the latest 'official' build, and may be (not sure) too old.
you could try one of the development builds (http://www.xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=35452), those are pretty up to date with the current XBMC svn.
try the latest kricker or ikons build.

TV shows
after a short while media info come up, can't manage to take image but will keep trying(novice), which is also transparent similar to yours but just above the "banner" of names/shows

Overall you have done an impressive job on this skin, but theres always room for improvement but for xbox i would resize most of the large images to save on memory and to alter the transparency of the panel for the info in the lower part of the screen as it's difficult to read with some fanart so it needs to be a little darker

you're completely right about that one. it's been on my may-need-to-do-but-can't-make-up-my-mind list for some time. it certainly doesn't work well with very light backgrounds.

for me also i will change some of the default backdrops as we all have difering tastes.

yep, that's the main reason i've made all of the default backgrounds user configurable. i certainly don't expect anyone to like all of the default ones, although i think some of them are quite funny, like the one for pictures in the home screen. ;-)

i would also like to change the poster frame for something plainer

the cd / dvd cases are one of the few mods that can't be disabled at the moment. i'm sure, one day, when i've got too much time on my hands, i'll change that.

if it's ok with you i will post it in here as a xbox version as opposed to a replacement for yours. it will save me some work as i have 4 other threads to maintain i don't really want another, and keep up the great work your doing:)

same to you, reading this thread there seems to be quite some demand for xbox compatible skins. i'm sure many are appreciating the service you're providing.

once you're finished i'll put a download link to your version on the frontpage.

Got to love the feed back you are getting Ronie. Nothing like the intial week of posting a MOD. I personally think you did a great job. My one last suggestion would be to increase the size of your media flags.

Overall great job and keep up the great work. Plus by the looks of it true video & audio flagging is not far away!

I had a similar problem at first in the skin settings try turning off the weather by conditions thing thats what i did , it may not be the same problem but it's worth a try.
And thanks for clarifying those screenshots as i were starting to think i had missed something.

I just tried 9.04.1 (on Windows 7) and it's indeed missing the default background images.
The reason for this is that the new background loading code which was recently added to XBMC is not yet included in the official stable builds.
The only option is the use one of the unoffical development builds (http://www.xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=35452) (try either the kricker or ikons builds).

Or wait 'till XBMC releases 9.10, but that won't happen for at least another 5 months.

it certainly keeps you busy, but that's ok i guess. i'd like to squeeze as much bugs as possible before i move on with adding extra features. adding your 'slide view' will possibly one of them, since there was some interest in it.
i wonder when the first request to make your skin transparent will pop up in The Operation thread. ;-)

I personally think you did a great job. My one last suggestion would be to increase the size of your media flags.

been there, done that, but it didn't work well. they looked a bit out of proportion compared to the text above the icons. currenly only the studio icon is a bit bigger than the other as it was too hard to recognize the studio logo at smaller sizes. but hey, i'll give it another shot, maybe i can get it right this time.

Overall great job and keep up the great work. Plus by the looks of it true video & audio flagging is not far away!

I thought i would post you a few shots of what i have done thus far, i have fixed the bottom info panel to match exactly the right list panel and have changed succesfully the dvd and cd covers i have not yet tested this on xbox as i want to get it looking how i want it on my pc before i port it to xbox should be no trouble though.

great work paul, i didn't expect you to come up with something so quickly!
the dvd case you're using is looks pretty good (and i did consider using it when i started working this mod) , but since a few other skins are already using that one, i picked another one for my mod.
the background for the info panel certainly makes the text more readable, but somehow i think it looks better if it's not the same color (transparency level) as the list background.
i'll try a few things and see if i can come up with something inbetween.

XBOX users please update to Transparency! v0.20 (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?wzior434zmh)

This will fix the texture corruption (it was caused by the linux version of XBMCTex, i switched to the windows version to compress the textures and all seems fine now).
It will also fix the crash when opening the weather window (shame on me for the bad code in MyWeather.xml)

There's no need to update if you're using windows / linux / OS X / ATV

It looks great on the xbox with the new v0.20 mod, but no pictures are showing on the home screen, it's just black. I'm running it on 480p with 36MB free memory which is a lot more than I expected for such a gorgeous skin.

Since this is for the Xbox, I have some suggestions to make it even more xbox friendly. Instead of Exit XBMC, you could have it become Restart XBMC since, in my case at least, when choosine Exit XBMC it just goes to a black screen and isn't very helpful. Also, I'm probably going to change one of the buttons into Games and point it towards my emulators and Xbox games. I'd also put the Info button back in the right thumb menu since I check the free memory quite often and would be able to do that without leaving wherever I'm at to go settings and look at it.

Finally, I'm going to put a button on the right click and add the File Manager so that I can still watch a movie while using Navi-X to download a movie or updating Apple Movie Trailers or running any script so that I'm not just staring at a loading screen while waiting.

I completely understand if you don't add these suggestions, but I thought I'd throw it out there since that's what I'm going to do to make it even more geared to the Xbox.

If the exit function does not work properly (i noticed this too, but i'm an xbox noob) it's most likely a bug in XBMC, not in the skin. Does the exit button work correctly with PM3.HD ?

I'm sorry but you lost me there. Which 'right click' menu are you referring to? Also i don't quite get what the filemanager has to do Apple Movie Trailers. As far as i know you can only use the filemanager to browse your harddisk?

All suggestions (code and patches too) are welcome, especially for the xbox. Im only using linux and today was the first day i ever used an xbox. Just to check out the problems xbox users were having with my skin.

yes, indeed it has. 9.04.x builds won't work with this skin (no matter what date they are released).
you need a pre-9.10 / SVN build otherwise you'll miss the backgrounds on the home screen.

You will also find the skin of PM3 the font are bigger than the PM3.HD.

PM3.HD was designed for widescreens, so i'm afraid it will never look good on 4x3 tv's.
the problem with making the fonts bigger will be that the text won't fit the menu buttons anymore. and it may cause similar problems in other places too.
but if you want to give it a try, you can adjust all the font sizes in fonts.xml (it's in the 720p folder).

yeah, I was using XBMC 9.04.1 r20848 which was compiled on june 1 and got the home page error. I'm going to download r20933 tonight and try it out and will post back if it's successful. (It works!!!)

The menu whenever you press down the right thumb stick is what I was talking about. Where Exit XBMC, Reboot, etc show up. Since there isn't an option to minimize an application, I found that by being able to pull up the file manager, I could, in essence, minimize whatever script that I'm running at the time while still downloading a video. Instead of staring at 1% complete, 5% complete, etc. I could use the file manager to navigate to the movies that are already on my harddrive or over an SMB share and watch a movie while the downloading is still going on with the script. It can also be used whenever FTPing large items so that you're not stuck watching a progress bar. I hope that makes more sense.

Also, I suggested using RestartXBMC instead of ExitXBMC since I have nothing to Exit to. XBMC is my default dashboard and whenever I click the Exit XBMC Button, I go nowhere. If XBMC locks up, which it does from time to time unfortunately, I can use the RestartXBMC and I don't have to do a complete power cycle which causes the default XBox screen to also load which has that loud sound that can't be disabled without messing around with the bios. I always disable the startup sound for XBMC, so whenever I choose Restart XBMC, I don't have to mute the TV or worry about a loud noise. It's nothing huge, it's just something that I find useful whenever I'm messing around on XBMC and don't want to turn the volume down in case of the occasional crash. I chose to just replace the Exit XBMC button since it didn't do anything for me.

I noticed 2 quirks.
1) if you disable the settings menu in the skin options there is no way to get back into it, it would be nice if the settings would be available through the menu item too (this is more hidden and thus not so obvious for dumbo users).
2) I use the multi image option but although it shows the different images in the skin settings dialogue and within the menu item itself it does not work on the home screen for TV shows and Movies and Videos (all the other menu items work fine)

I also have an question; my biggest negative off XBMC is that you cannot have multiple libraries. I have different movie directories for Kids Movies, HD Movies etc. I don't want to mix these. The way I address it today is that the scan into library feature is only enabled for my main library. The other Libary I access in file mode through the video menu. But with this skin, if Library mode is enabled for movies it is also enabled for videos (and vice versa when you choose file mode).

Is there a way to change this ? I would love to have a seperate menu item for my kids movies that would go straight away into the file mode Kids Movies source.

First of all a big thanks for the update to v0.20! Corrupted textures on the xbox are history :nod: Also the weatherscreen is working including the animated icons. The good old xbox has just enough power to display them.

I can confirm that using the multi images for movies and tv shows on the home screen only show the default backdrop.

Another thing is that i cannot use the system info screen as it hangs the xbox. Could it be the same bug as in the weatherscreen, ronie?

I hope you are able to fix these bugs whenever you have the time for it. Thanks in advance!

If I missed something I am sorry, I only read the first 2 pages of this thread.
If I had a working xbox still I would give it a go and try to make it xbox compatible. However a flood killed my xbox and I am in the process of repairing/replacing it.

When I did loads of theme related stuff, I noticed that some of the larger textures looked f*cked on the xbox, but in ubuntu it looked fine. I only had that problem when I used PS to edit and save the texture. When I used GIMP on the other hand they looked fine on the xbox. I don't know why that is but it got to where I would just make the gfx in PS and save it then open it in GIMP and save it again, somehow it worked???
Maybe someone can give that crazyness a try.

Other than that I have no clue what to do to make it work better on the xbox except what everone already knows, lower resolution textures.

Thanx for the tips IllumiNaughty. The issue with the corrupted textures has already been fixed. The cause of the issue was using XBMCTex on linux to compress the textures. Seems that the linux version kinda...ehh...sucks. Using the windows version fixed the problem.

Thank you for this great mod. It is almost perfect, but I have a little request !

On the home screen, the vertical menu on the left should be a little wider.

I am french, and the labels are longer words in this language. This leads to scrolling wich isn't really beautifull at this place.

Try to switch to french language to see what I Mean !

I Think that 25% wider should be enough.

I fear the whole localization thing might be a bit difficult. It will be easy to make the home buttons a bit wider, but the left menu buttons on all the other pages is a whole different story.
Also if i wanna do things right, i'm gonna need people who can translate some of the new options/settings i've implemented in this skin, as they currently are english only.

Well you shouldn't remove the settings in the home screen, unless, you have mapped a key on your keyboard / remote (controller) that will take you directly to the settings menu.
So if you want to hide settings in home, just map this function XBMC.ActivateWindow(Settings) to one of the keys.

Hey, thanx a lot for that one. I hadn't noticed it but you're right. It'll be fixed in the next release. :-)

I don't think there currently is. If you use the Movies and/or TV Shows button in the Home menu, it will automatically switch the Video view to library mode.
There are some plans to redesign (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=51605) to whole library function in XBMC, so maybe in the near future it will all become a bit more flexible

In aeon the videos menu item takes me straight to the files menu of the video sources while the movie menu item takes me straight to the library view of the movies.

Maybe they did some tweaking ?

I had a look and at the aeon code and the problem with their code is that the videos section will always be in filemode, in aeon there's no way to set your videos to library view.

If you want something similar with my skin, you'll have to edit Home.xml
and change the two entries of <onclick>ActivateWindow(Videos)</onclick> to <onclick>ActivateWindow(VideosFiles)</onclick>

Running this on XBOX build 20950

I can't seem to get rotating custom backgrounds on the home screen.
They show (and rotate properly) on the skin settings >> backgrounds >> multi-image setup screen but the skin still only displays the default ones on the home screen.

Custom backgrounds are kept in a separate folder off the root (E:/backgrounds)

Anyone else having this issue?
Am I missing a setting?

There's an issue with custom backdrops for TV Shows and Movies on the home screen (will be fixed in next release).
All of the other ones should work just fine. Let me know if those do work for you.

I'm glad you came up with this mod, Ronie. I've used a lot of skins lately and at the end of the road i was back at PM3.HD, because it's so "lightweight" and functional for the xbox platform. It's kinda funny: you redesigned it in a way, i was trying to mock up in my head :)

I'm glad you came up with this mod, Ronie. I've used a lot of skins lately and at the end of the road i was back at PM3.HD, because it's so "lightweight" and functional for the xbox platform. It's kinda funny: you redesigned it in a way, i was trying to mock up in my head :)

A quick question: I have noticed that if you go directly into songs, the music fanart is not activated. It is only activated when you drill down either from Artist, or Album. Is this a feature of XBMC, or the skin? Again, thanks!

Support for fanart in the music library is a bit limited (http://xbmc.org/forum/showpost.php?p=344161&postcount=13) in XBMC. Here's what it comes down to:
1) If you start browsing by artist, it will show fanart even if you browse down to the album and song level.
2) If you start browsing by albums, it's not possible to display fanart in the album view, but if you browse down to songs it's possible by using the workaround explained below.
3) If you start browsing by songs, XBMC also has no build in way to display fanart, but in Transparency! i've tried to work around this by looking for a fanart.jpg image in the artist folder.

This workaround won't work if you're either using one of xbmc's build-in scrapers to fetch fanart, or if you're using artistname-fanart.jpg instead of just fanart.jpg.

So for this to work, your directory structure should be similar to this:
music\artist\fanart.jpg
music\artist\album\songs.mp3

Now if i understand you correctly Music>Album>Songs does work, but Music>Songs doesn't ?
That's strange...if one way works, the other should work to.

Really love this skin but I cant seem to get it to give it a bunch of images in a directory and have it choose a randon one from them for one of the Videos section background. It's working just fine in the settings - I choose the directory and the preview cycles through the images just fine. When I get out of the settings screen and get back to the videos section on the home page, the original (non-cycled) image is still there.
I've chosen multiple images, of course, and refreshed the skin by re launching XBMC.
What am I doing wrong?

Sure, my bad really. I should have made the sources available from the start. I'll upload them asap.

There's already an option to add Movies and TVShows to the home menu, those button should take you straight to the Movies and TVShows sections of the Video library.
Or maybe i'm missing your point?

There's been a request for this before, so i guess i should come up with a proper solutions for those who prefer filemode for Videos. I'll add it to the to-do list.

I love this update. It looks great. I did some modifications to the home.xml just to save me a couple clicks.
Since I already had one-click access to my movies and TV shows, I wanted one-click access to my video plugins. I changed Videos at the top to say VidPlugins (I tried Video Plugins, but it only showed Video Plug which didn't make much sense).

I changed both instances of
<label>3</label>
<onclick>ActivateWindow(Videos)</onclick>
to
<label>VidPlugins</label>
<onclick>ActivateWindow(24,plugin://video/)</onclick>

I also changed the location that Games pointed to from

**** In order to make clicking the button actually go to your games, you have to go to programs and click Add Source and then browse to where your games are and then title it Games. That makes the activated windows look at My Programs and then find the Games folder and open it. You can change the name to whatever you want, but you'd have to change the settings in between <onclick> to match it.

Awesome skin mod!!
The library layout views are fantastic, very useful and fast, even with slower computer or XBOX
The overall package has a very smooth appeal. The family especially likes the weather backdrops and animated weather icons, and we find ourselves waiting for the weather to change just to see the backdrop change :grin:

Have you thought about adding movie trailer support from the movie library without having to go into Movie Information?

Nope, i never thought about it, but i just tried if i could get it to work.
It turns out you can only start a Trailer from an info window and not from one of the regular views, so i'm afraid it's not supported by xbmc.

Another great tip! I think i'll also be using this in the next release. I did a few tests and the code seems to fallback to MyPrograms if no Games folder is present, so i assume it won't cause any problems if xbmc can't find a Games subfolder.

Already in the current version fanart will change when the song changes if you use the party mode feature when playing songs. Probably also when using smart playlists (I haven't tested this though).
Having the fanart changing for regular playlists in 'Now Playing' view as well would be really cool, and the workaround you are proposing will satisfy my needs in this area :;):

This is a great update, everything's working so well!
Regarding the fan art, I think people would be interested in getting that to work in the Now Playing screen but maybe the only way to get it right is to have some sort of script/.exe that will rename and copy the right fanart image to the right artist folder and rename it to folder.jpg outside of XBMC. If people could run this after each new fanart addition, it should work pretty well. I'm not sure how much work this is!

I'm sure there are several ways to get it done. One way would be to use Media Info Plus to organize your music library. As far as i know it has a 'Music Wizard' option which will move all your music files to a music\artist\album\ structure. Media Info Plus will also download the necessary fanart and store it in the artist folder.

Anyway, Now Playing fanart for the current playing artist will probably be supported in one of the next releases.

Also, I'm using the newly-added large font option and that helps a lot in making it easier to use the interface - I think a lot of people forget that the whole concept of the HTPC is the "ten foot interface" as Bill Gates called it - the ability to use all of it from 10 feet, and using a remote.
Only problem is that the increase font size messes up some of the alignments etc!
Yes, the skin wasn't designed with large fonts in mind. You can enable 'wide home menu buttons' and 'wide side menu buttons' in skin settings. This may fix a few of the alignment problems.

I've been following that thread for a while and i'll probably implement some 'show fanart instead of music visualization' option too. I have my doubt on making it a slideshow, as this would mean you'll have to create a new directory structure with subfolders for every artist.
Just showing a single image (the default fanart image) would be much easier imho.

I've been trying a few things last night and it seems to work properly with both the fullscreen Music Visualization Window as well as on the Home Screen.

Transparency! v0.24

Just noticed a small issue with Transparency! v0.23 which causes the animated weather icons to 'stutter' a bit, instead of rendering smoothly.

You can easily fix this yourself by removing all the weather.gif images from the Transparency!/media/foldericons/weather/0-47 subfolders.

I've fixed this issue in Transparency! v0.24 (available for download in the first post), but there's really no need to update at this point.

I have a request PLEASE.

I need the Home Menu buttons to be about 50 percent WIDER than the ones that you use for the "wider" buttons function.

I know that probably sounds weird, but my buttons have MULTIPLE labeling.

Something like Photos / Comic Books or MP3 Music / Audio Books.

I accomplish this using the Files, not Library method for certain things.

So my request is........ can you PLEASE make another set of Home Buttons that are 50 percent wider than the widest ones now. (Maybe a "Largest" button selection), AND Please enable "Files" for the Video Button. I found the TV/Movies selection and I use it now for those function in library mode.

SORRY for such a long post.

Transparacy Skin would be just about perfect for my uses if you could find the time to do both of these.

I am not a big fan of trying out new skins, but I dowloaded this one for the heck of it and quite liked what I saw.

After a brief playing around I noticed that the mouse is not able to call the left slide in menus (took my a while to find skin settings :) ) and shouldn't removing text with wide icons place them closer together to allow more wide icons in the area? (like in PM3.HD)

Also this skin seems to do stuff with some of my fanart PM3.HD does not, like rezising / stretching fanart of "nonstandard" size.

There's no way that changing fanart is visble in Party Mode ! I've used PM a gazillion times and I've never seen Fanart in there!

What version of XBMC are you using and how are you doing it?!!

I am using SVN R20920. I just redid a test now and it works like a charm: First I created a Smart Playlist with Genre = "Alt. Rock". I set the playing order to random to really get the nice benefits from the fanart changing for each song. I then pressed "C" on the newly created smart playlist and selected "Play in Party Mode". I then opened a bottle conditioned ALE, sat down in the armchair and let this skin work its magic :;):

PS: I have all my music stored in seperate folders Artist - Album --> Songs, with a fanart.jpg file loaded into both the Artist and Album folders.

Would it be possible to add Player Finish time to the DialogFullScreen.xml? (From the Skinning manual: "Player.FinishTime Time playing media will end")

Whenever you pull up info while playing a video, it shows the time the video will finish. I tried to use the code from the PM3 Sub Menus mod, but apparently the location isn't in the right spot and it wouldn't show.

I thought you meant that the fan art shows up without fanart.jpg in place.
Can anyone tell me where fanart is stored? I guess I could copy it and place it in each artist folder as you suggested.

secondly, i love this skin in general. Bringing out the fanart looks amazing. The only thing I don't like is the style of the menus on top. The font doesn't quite suite the rest of the skin and i don't like the square edges. Something a bit sleeker might look cool. Is that something your thinking of working on.

It would be possible, however the current studio icons are way too small to stretch them to a size compared to the genre icons.
One thing i can think of is displaying them on top of the folder icon... but i'm not sure if that would look good.
Any other ideas are welcome, of course.

Hmmm......never ?
There were some code changes in xbmc after the 9.0.4 release and i'm make use those new features in Transparency! It's not possible to make the skin backwards compatible with 9.0.4 i'm afraid.
But why not update xbmc to a more recent version ?
There are prebuild binaries available for almost every platrom, just google "xbmc nightly builds", it wouldn't hurt to try one of those.

I do agree with what someone said about the fonts though - something sleek would be better. As I'm a graphic designer and have over 20k of fonts, do you want me to find something sexy and sleek?Please, PLEASE then pick a 'free' font that could be included with the skin, so that it does not have to be downloaded separately, or hinder Ronie from open sourcing this skin!

Nope, the DVD logo refers to the source, while the XVID logo refers to the video codec being used.
So if i rip a DVD to, let's say, an .avi file using the XVID codec, it should both display the DVD logo (source media) and XVID logo (used video codec).

I know some other skins are mixing up those two, but it never made sense to me?

Quick suggestion:
the update of fanart/posters takes very long (especially from themoviedb.org) because the program downloads all available art (full size) into a temp folder.

Solution:
It would speed up the process of the program only downloads the thumbnails at first and afterwards download those fanarts selected by the user.

The program is otherwise very clean and simple, so keep up the good work!!! Maybe in the future we can dream it also covers TV-shows :)

Its like buses this place. You wait for one skin that fits your needs and then 2 come along at once. I'm loving this and MiniMeedia.

Suggestions (I'm only using the TV library at the moment as I'm at work):

Would really like to see media info on the List view in TV. I tend to have Fanart view for the Levels 1 & 2 (Season Name - Season No.) and then List for the episodes. I know its all new so is probably in the pipeline anyways.

Harping on with media info here. I think having that info also on the OSD would be useful. I have found times when my audio equipment has needed a switch of setting to accomodate the encoding of a file, I know that info is readily available in other places already, but being able to bring up the OSD and check what formats are currently being used could be handy.
I'll have to check if that's possible. In xbmc not all database information is available in all the views. Maybe the on-screen info window (press 'i' on remote during playback) would be a better place instead of the OSD ?

I know you didn't design the look of the OSD and that you have mentioned not being graphically minded, but I'd really like to see the OSD redesigned. It would give the skin some more of its own identity. I love that the usability of PM3.HD is retained, it was one of the features that kept me going back to it. But this skin is just sleekierish. <-- Thats a word, honest.
What i would really like is to somehow combine the OSD, the full screen info window and the dialog seekbar. I don't see the point in having three separate windows available when playing a movie.....but possibly other users have a different opinion on this.

First off, I love the skin and rapid dev going on! Keep up the great work!

I was playing round last night while watching a tv show and noticed that the contrast and brightness controls did not work. These controls worked fine on the previous skin I used. Is this a known bug?

The skin has no influence on those controls, so it's probably an xbmc bug.
Just tried it with Transparency! & PM3.HD and it didn't work with both skins.

This post will serve no purpose other than to say - thank you, for creating this fantastic skin :)

So far it's the most responsive skin I've used (bar the default one, of course) on XBMC on my Mac Mini - where the last gen Intel GMA950 GPU really hampers other skins like Aeon & MiniMeedia, Transparency! is smooth as silk and wonderfully responsive to my commands.

So it just became my primary skin.. :)

Good looking skin! It's off to a great start.

One thing I've been doing to a bunch of skins I download is a home screen button labeled "Trailers" that launches the Apple Movie Trailers script. Since you account for a bunch of home screen customization, you may think about adding the option with a file browser so people can point it to the default.py. I know a bunch of people would appreciate it.

Sort of a nitpick:

I'd suggest altering the font colouring (maybe the font as well?). The neon green fits well with PM3, but it is kind of jarring with Transparency.

It's been on my mind since day one to change the color scheme of the skin, preferably to blue or something. I've had a few go's at it, but failed miserably each time.
I even tried to make it all black/white/grey but that turned out rather dull.
Changing the color of the skin will be a lot of work, not only the font color has to be changed, but also a lot of textures will have to be modified or recreated.

Anyway, i'm not opposed to it and in time, if i can get right i will change it to something else. And as always, if anyone's willing to step in, please let me know.

Transparency! includes a lot of artwork: weather fanart, genre icons, media flags, animated weather icons, etc... That's why the size is so big.
Now i could take all of those things out of the skin, but than this forum will be flooded with posts of people who can't get this to work or can't get that to work.

Aeon Auriga is a different skin, so there's no need to have it installed. If you do have it, keep the skins in different folders.

Loving the skin. Very quick and clean... one thing missing.

I saw the last screenshot for episodes and it has a "watched" checkbox on the right of the list. Can we get that on all of the list views (fanart, list, etc.) for movies/tvshows? Having the ability to quick glance at my movie list and see what I've watched is essentially a must for me.

Busy with it, as we speak. ;-)

I've also noticed (not sure if this is a skin problem or not) that my videos with 5.1 tracks as the second track show up with 2.0 icons... probably since the 2.0 track is track one on my files. However, I have track 2 as my default.

As far is i understand the detection code in xbmc tries to find the highest quality audio stream when multiple streams are available, using this rule: eac3 > dts > ac3 > all else.
So in your case, it should pick ac3. Why it's not working, i dont know.
You might want to ask CapnBry, who wrote the detection code, in this (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=30419) thread.

That's correct, xbmc will detect the codecs either when a movies is added to the library or when an exciting movie is played for the first time.

Media flags can be disabled globally, if you do so, they won't show in the info window either.
Personally i think there's plenty of room to also show the year, i think i'll put it in front of the studio info.

alright, i think this is gonna be a long answer, so grab a beer (or a cup of coffee if you're just waking up), sit down and enjoy.

media-flagging, here's what it comes down to:
until recently there were two ways of getting media flagging to work
- by adding all the info to the file/folder name of the movie (this is not supported by Transparency!, except for one exception i'll explain later).
- by adding all the info to the <studio> tag in your .nfo file (most will use Media Info Plus for this)

recently new code was added to xbmc which enables two new ways:
- by default, the new code will read the <streamdetails> section from the .nfo file if present
- if there's no .nfo file, or if it doesn't contain a <streamdetails> section it will do the detection itself.

so how does Transparency! handle source (dvd, blu-ray, hddvd) detection ?
by trying to be smart, i guess. i never liked the fact you'd have to rename all your movies just to make this flagging thing work, so i took a different approach.
The code in Transparency! tries to determine the source by looking at the file extension:
- if the file extension is .ifo or .vob it must be a dvd, so that's easy to figure out.
- same goes for the typical blu-ray (.m2ts) and hddvd (.evo) extensions. if one of those extensions is seen, it will show the appropriate source flag.
- next up, disk images (.iso, .img), those are a bit tougher. the code tries to determine the source by also looking at the resolution. if the resolution is less then 720, it assumes it's a dvd. if it's 720 or 1080 i assume it's a blu-ray unless there's a hddvd tag in the filename.
- all other extension (.avi .mkv .mpg .ts .wmv - if i've missed some, let me know and i'll add those) will be handled the same way as above, by looking at the resolution.

since there's no way to determine whether a 720 or 1080 movie is a blu-ray or hddvd, i choose to assume it's a blu-ray by default. why? because blu-ray disc are far more popular these days, so more likely to be present in anyone's library.
also is far as i know, they've stopped producing hddvd's altogether.
but as said before, if you do have hddvd's in your collection, just add hddvd to the filename and it will override the default behavior.

it will not pick up hd dvd because that's not...well, i would say, the standard (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50312).

I see also standard DVD flag when "HDTV" or "Blu-ray" or "Bluray" is in the folder name... so blu-ray source is ignored and no Blu-ray flag on screen :(

source detection for tv shows is a bit more difficult as for movies. with tv show the source can, besides dvd, blu-ray and hd-dvd, also be sd-tv and hd-tv.

i'm basically using the same approach as above.
- first check for typical dvd, blu-ray and hd-dvd extensions.
- for .iso and .img files can be either dvd, blu-ray or dvd using the same rules as for movies. they will never be flagged as sd-tv or hd-tv since i assume nobody will store tv rips as disc images.
- all other extensions (and this is probably why the code fails in your case) are considered to be either sd-tv or hd-tv just by looking at the resolution again.

so it's a shortcoming in the way i do source detection for tv shows.
i guess, in the 'all other extensions' case, i'll have to check the filename for the presence of a sddvd, hddvd or bluray tag.

Very popular format for HD content now is matroska container (mkv extension).
It can contain many video materials in HD with surround sound up to 1536kbps bitrate.
I my library 98% is mkv. All forder names and file names includes title, year, resolution, audio, video codec (for example: Apocalypto.2006.Blu-ray.1080p.DTS.x264.mkv).
But... I never saw "blu-ray" flag in my library.
If your mod assumes it's always blu-ray when 720 or 1080 is in folder and file name so... why I don't see blu-ray flags in my library?
But folder name and *.mkv file contains "720" or "1080"!
I see only HDDVD flag (if "HDDVD" is present) or stardard DVD flag in other cases - and not Blu-ray flag.

One more thing: look at video codec please mostly used by rippers: x264 - not h264 and I see h264 flag in my library. Is it normal or another issue by me...?

Please answer my questions above and post advice because I don't know what I'm doing wrong...
I'd like to see "Blu-ray" sign on my TV :D

None of these are big problems for me though.

Interlaced/progressive flagging is not possible as of now with the new media flaggin patch in svn. see the related thread.

For all (64 movies in my movie folder - all in separate subfolders) detection fails for Blu-ray. I've got both "Bluray" and "Blu-ray" string in some movies name and... still standard DVD flag is displayed :(

One thing i forgot to mention, with the new build-in code, the detection will be done when you add movies to the library and when you play an existing movie for the first time.
It does not pick up the media details when you're browsing your existing library!
So for the best results, it would be wise to delete the video library and recreate it.

One more thing: look at video codec please mostly used by rippers: x264 - not h264 and I see h264 flag in my library.

Believe me, i've spent half a day googling trying to find out the difference between x.264 and h.264 and it's still unclear to me. As far as i understand x.264 is the encoder library used to encode movies with the h.264 codec. That's why i'm using the h.264 codec flag.
I may be wrong and if it really bothers you, there's already a x.264 flag shipped with Transparency!. Just delete Traansparency!\media\flags\movies\videocodec\h.264 .png and rename x.264.png to h.264.png

Nope, it only looks at video width, here is the resolution detection part from the xbmc source code:

The new build-in detection code has a few limitations. It does not detect if a movie uses progressive (p) or interlaced (i) scan. Even if the info is available in the <studio> or <streamdetails> tag, it will ignore it. This issue was mentioned a couple of times in the media flagging thread (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=30419&page=52), but it doesn't seem that it's going to be supported any time soon.

This is default behaviour. It will show the visualization on the home screen, so if you set it to none then a black screen will be shown.
I've made some changes to this, so in the next release things will work slightly different.
It will give you an option to show the fanart of the currently paying artist on the home window, or just show the default backgrounds.

I played around with a couple of ideas for a while when someone requested a special left menu button for trailers. Even tried if i could map a function to my remote to start the trailer, but that seems to be impossible.
Since i'll be adding a flag indicating if a trailer is available, it might also be possible to make this flag selectable and launch the trailer from there.
Even if it's possible, i still have my doubts on it, as this would slightly change the way you would have to navigate the fanart view.

There's a lot of creativity going on in the Aeon thread with people making all kinds of great mods, so that's something i'm closely following.

The way Transparency! and Aeon look is still miles apart, and it will stay that way.
Aeon uses a lot of 'heavy, dark' textures while i try to keep it 'light & clean'.

I did hard work to create my library because of national scraper I used (filmweb.pl) and manually added many thumbs, fanart etc. But... I'm not finished yet scanning all hard drives. I'll try add other movie folders and will see if it helps. Can I do it this way or I must recreate ALL library to take effect...?

Yes, just adding a new folder should be enough.

As a player I'm using external player (KMPlayer) because of CoreAVC best quality codecs. I created advancedsettings.xml and set it as default player in fullscreen mode. Is this way is enough as "first play" playing for seeing flags...?

I've noticed when browsing certain menus, eg the movie info menu or file manager, its pretty hard to see what option you have selected. Would it be possible to brighten up the selection shade.

i would second that change. sometimes, especially in dialogs, it's hard to see if the menu option has been selected.

yeah thats exactly what i meant. It might just be my old crt TV but it can be quite difficult to distinguish.

Yes, just adding a new folder should be enough.
Just added new folder contains the movie: The.Bone.Collector.1999.1080p.BluRay.DTS.x264-CtrlHD.mkv. Folder has the same name. And... nothing changed :(
Before adding I removed advancedsettings.xml file and player was back default. In file mode I choosed: movie info and scraper filmweb.pl loaded info, thumb and fanart. After that I pressed a button: play movie. Played few minutes and switched to library view and... standard DVD flag is present - not Bluray flag :(
Added one more movie in file mode: Casino 1995 1080p BluRay DTS x264-CtrlHD.mkv and after scraper did his job I switched to library mode and... not suprised: DVD flag also is present. Pressed "Play" in library mode, played few minutes and after that... still DVD logo near "DTS 5.1" flag :(

Do I setting up all in right order?

I can't wait to see "Bluray" flag :)

Devise an ingenious plan to see it please :grin:

Yes, it does :) Also other flags: video codec, aspect ratio, audio codec, studio (not in every movie).

o.k., i've made a few changes to the way i detect dvd's, bluray and hddvd.
please wait for the next release and let me know if the problem is still there.

Now that TV shows and Movies can be accessed directly from the home menu the only thing I can't access is my video plugins, can a seperate button be made in the home menu that takes us straight there. I know that the videos option exists but I feel thats a bit messy. Perhaps the favourites option could also be moved up into the menu

Also have you thought about splitting the home menu options into subsections like in aeon so that up and down takes you to a different set of options.

Line 1 = Movies - TV - Pictures - Music - Favourites
Line 2 = Scripts - Programs - Plugins - Settings

or something similar.

What does the little play button in the bottom right of the home screen do? When I press it nothing happens. I don't see this is PM3.
