Dear Broard.

I know that there any many HTPC DIY threads tackling all the HW issues on how to implement the ultimate XBMC platform.

Now it seems that there are absolutely tempting HW available.
http://fit-pc2.com/wiki/index.php?title=Fit-PC2_Specifications.

What are the developers thoughs about this? Will XBMC be able to run on this.
- Intel Atom Z530 1.6GHz
- 1GB DDR2-533 on-board
- Intel GMA500 graphics acceleration
- Full hardware video acceleration of H.264, MPEG2, VC1, and WMV9
- DVI Digital output up to 1920 x 1080 through HDMI connector
- 1000 BaseT Ethernet
- 802.11g WLAN

To be more specific: can XBMC use video acceleration also?
This HW is by far the BEST with XBMC. Ideal combination!! :)

Dear Jobe, I recommend reading the many, many threads on the topic of video acceleration throughout this forum to discover the answer you seek.

Well, for now I have nothing invested in here, don't have the HW. Dispite that the HW acc VDPAU for nvidia is supported only, this Fit-PC2 HW could be amazing 720p XBMC platform! :) The pupose is to reveal wheater XBMC is going to work at all (network, audio, DVI,USB).

1080p is the dr3am to chase, not to have, yet.

With the current state of affairs, it makes no sense to spend money on anything other than an NVidia solution. IMHO of course...

To be more specific: can XBMC use video acceleration also? No, currently only NVIDIA GeForce 8 and 9 Series Graphics Controllers/Chipsets are supported in XBMC.

How would this handle 720p? That would be good enough for me.

Poorly at best. The dual core 1.6GHz atom can only play the lower profile 720p content. If you want HD on an atom based system you *need* VDPAU. It is the only way that is even plausible right now.

Too bad. I kind of figured though. I still want to pick one up just to tinker with...

None of the ION computers are actually shipping in the US yet are they?

Yes, search "zotac ion" on newegg.

Your best bet for this situation would seem to be to use one of the "external player" builds of XBMC, and set it to whatever software is set up for hardware video acceleration. Judging from the screenshots here (http://fit-pc2.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page), they seem to be using Windows Media Player.

As for how smoothly the XBMC interface runs on an Atom, the descriptions of an ION setup's performance should give you a general idea. I can't say for sure how much better or worse the GMA500 graphics will be than the ION, though.
