View Full Version : [LIVE] Install XBMC Live to CF through a USB reader then move to IDE with CF adapter?

Hello,

I have managed to install XBMC Live 9.04 Final to a CF disk 4GB using USB card reader.

After successful installation I connected CF to an IDE to CF adapter.

Now I'm facing the problem, XBMC wont boot.
The only way to boot XBMC is to plug CF to reader again.

Other installation I did directly to a CF (connected to IDE) works without problem.

I'm using Card reader install method as I want to avoid killing CF to soon.

Any help on this matter is highly appreciated.

Cheers...

I haven't looked at the live usb installer, but suspect what i know the problem is.

When you have the CF card mounded using the usb adaptor, it will be mounted under a different device name from what it will be when you have it plugged in directly to the ide interface.

So when you boot directly using the ide interface, grub and some of the mount points will be looking in the wrong places.

If this is the case, its easy enough to fix - boot up using the usb adaptor, then update grub & fstab. Reboot and that should be you.

upcoming 9.04.1 will have a new installer option allowing fixed disks to be handled as removable drive.
That is exactly what you need, both for preventing burning CF with a traditional ext3 fs install and for this boot issue (hopefully...)

Thx prae5 and thx capriotti for your replies.

I've changed menu.lst to mach device from fdisk -l which is /dev/sda1

I'm not sure if I'm updating the grub properly and pretty sure that I don't know how to correctly update fstab.

Also, I suspect .bootMedia folder as there is boot and grub folders.
Not sure what is happening when I change to IDE adapter.
I was thinking to manually place boot dir to a root?

Anyway, I'll try playing with grub and fstab more and let ya know if I succeed :)

Cheers...

9.0.4.1 is now out so try that instead.

I think this refers to 9.0.4.1 Live which is not out yet.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

You can just get the new installer from the SVN (http://xbmc.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/xbmc/branches/linuxport/XBMC/tools/XBMCLive/installXBMC.py) and use it with 9.04.
