[RELEASE] TVCatchup.com (Video) Plugin - Live Stream UK Freeview Channels

Hey Guys

I've only be using xbmc for a few days now (linux version) but I was so excited by the videos plugins to only be disappointed by the lack of one for live streaming tv.

after a bit of searching around I found TVCatchup.com and after an evening with voinage's plugin tutorial I managed to get up and running my first successful plugin :grin:

So here it is the TVCatchup.com Video Plugin!!!

I will try and keep this up to date though.

V2.1 - Temporary fix

* Site seems to have rolled back some changes so this is to temporarily deal with them until they re-implement the API again
* Thumbnails are currently broken (due to recent site changes)
* Now/Next is currently broken (due to recent site changes)

LATEST UPDATES: (v2.1)
- Now hosted as a google code project
- Username / Password are now plugin settings - thanks to dink for this change!
- Now displays simple now/next info when selecting channel
- Work with new site as of 6/6/2009

Notes:
- TVCatchup.com requires registration (free). Sign up and get a username/password
- Extract to the plugins\video folder in your xbmc dir
- Boot up xbmc and enjoy :cool:
- (remember to enter your username / password via the plugin settings!)

KNOWN BUGS:
- xbmc seems to hang if you try to watch a channel which is "off-line" at the moment (i.e. five us only broadcasts between certain hours - out of hours xbmc hangs) Fixed in latest T3CH stable build with plugin v2.1
- xbox version of xbmc has a memory leak when trying to watch rtmp streams (like this & iPlayer). The xbox will freeze after 4-5 minutes. (needs a patch to be applied to xbmc SVN code) - info from rudeboyx Fixed in latest T3CH stable build with plugin v2.1
- can be processor intensive on the xbox due to the decryption required on the stream (dj_gerbil)
- Not all thumbnails display as they do not exist on the tvcatchup servers yet (WIP from their side i guess) TVC seem to have updated the servers

Installed and had a play, all the channels I tried played back flawlessly.

Do you think it will ever be possible to have a tv guide for the channels? Or at least a now/next

Damn it I spent ages trying to get my aerial pointing the right way so I can pick up freeview on my TV which took all last weekend! This would have saved me some trouble - great plugin, works a treat. Would be great if the now/next or tv guide could be added too.

Im aware of the xbox incompatibility at the mo, so I'm not even gonna try xbox yet. But on my pc I click on each channel title, but then nothing happens, no stream starts, and there's nothing inside when I click on the channel ???

I think I've set the username and pass right-- do they have to have the "*" (stars) before and after them or would they just read "password".

Or do they even need the quotation marks? I wasn't clear from the 1st post.

I'm hoping that's all thats wrong cos I'm using:

Yes it plays brilliantly, a little stutter when it gets going but it's a very minor thing. I think this post will become very popular quite quickly.

Just one question.. I've switched to using the MediaStream skin. I've added the links to the channels to my favourites, so they're more easily accessible from the main menu of xbmc. But they don't start from there :( With regards to logging-in based plugins... is there a requirement of xbmc for this to take place within the MyVideos section of xbmc..

at the moment the script displays a list of channels, and when you click a channel a stream file is displayed, so you have to select that file to playback the channel.

would it be possible to click the channel you want, to have it playback imediatley and skip a step of the process?

Im using the latest bleeding edge version of Xbmc compiled by T3CH.

When i run the plugin I can see the list of channels but when I select a channel I dont see anything else to select.

Maybe it will happen sometime.. bbc have been in approached by other uk channels to borrow their iplayer technology.

Hi everyone,

I know this is my first post ever, but I've been following finding a way to get live TV to run via my xbox for a while, and I believe that this project could lead to some interesting developments (xbox as a tv recorder anyone?). I noticed that the script fantaman32 originally provided (thanks!) has now been broken by the latest updates the TVCatchup guys have made to their website, so I looked at the script and have fixed it up again :laugh:. I don't think this will last too long though as the site seems to be undergoing a few changes!

I couldn't work out how to get the thumbnails for the channels, but the names display properly and it will actually work! There is still the REALLY bad problem that after 4 minutes the streams will crash due to a buffer overflow of some kind though...

Oh, and you'll need to put your username and password in the default.py again :)

I'm afraid that this is going to be fairly short lived if you guys can't be bothered to work with our established development team

At TVC we have a fairly open policy regarding working with developers, and we're all keen XBMC users. Several of the guys at TVC have been working on XBMC projects anyway and it would be kind of nice to work together rather than just see people try to rip our site.

All this has been happening at a time when it seems just about everyone who knows how to is setting up a VPN on a rented server and illegally trying to sell access to the site or rip streams for their X Boxes without bothering to establish that we have an established co-development programme.

Ask us nicely and we would quite probably be happy to work with you, and may even give you access to our api. But if we are forced to, then we shall just kill access.

Sorry C-Quell, but we are pretty open with developers and really happy to work with you guys if everything is out in the open.

A few of the guys have already made some stunning XBMC apps, as described above, and it's a shame nobody bothered to check them out before doing this even if they couldn't be bothered to speak with us.

After all, we just receive, encode and distribue everything out our cost, surely it isn't asking too much to expect the courtesy of a pm in our forums?

ahh! whats happening i go away for a week and when i come back my new favorite plugin has been pulled and theres some serious scandle going on.

TVcatchup.com is an awsome idea and im behind it all the way and whenver im at my PC and want to watch TV, its the first webpage im going to but when im using my xbox/TV then this plugin is the only way to go. ultimateley this plugin did nothing but create suppport and awareness for this new awsome site. Everybody was a winner.

so lets get it sorted and colaborate with the websites developers and gain access to the api.

think how awsome this plugin could be with proper support from the website develpoers.

I'm sure what Dan means by stream piracy is just the fact that you guys wrote a plug-in without checking it was ok first. The thing is that they've put a lot of work into building the servers and the website, and the BBC have already tried to close them down saying that they were breaching the copyright laws so they are a little touchy about how their streams are used. But all's ok now so just enjoy this fantastic service.

Xbmc is open source, I would hope that other people are willing to share too.

In regards to "just making a plugin" - most sites are pirate and not legitimate.
They generally just steal the links from other people or index video storage providers.

Get the version modified by Omega (Post 20), they changed their site this week which broke the original plugin, Omega got it working again.

And yeah it's just one file in a folder, just don't forget to add your tvcatchup.com username/pass in the file.

been using xbmc for a while now (although not registered on here). think its an absolutely amazing bit of kit and have lots of respect to the guys that taken the time to code it all up :)....

and again, the tv-catchup service, awesome ! especially with the convieniance of having it in XBMC (so cheers again tvc-dan/omega/fatman) lol.. tis a shame about all the politics though.

but i was basically wondering if i can have the password to the zip file or is that devs only or something??

I'm afraid that this is going to be fairly short lived if you guys can't be bothered to work with our established development team

At TVC we have a fairly open policy regarding working with developers, and we're all keen XBMC users. Several of the guys at TVC have been working on XBMC projects anyway and it would be kind of nice to work together rather than just see people try to rip our site.



Ask us nicely and we would quite probably be happy to work with you, and may even give you access to our api. But if we are forced to, then we shall just kill access.

Hi guys,

I go away for a week and come back and some major stuff has been happening!! I saw that the plugin had been killed last week so was working on one that did the (now/next) schedule etc. from the website but I will pull this new version as I did not know it was as issue.

Like i said in my top post (and it was only my first post on the site). I had only had xbmc for a few days and was unaware of any previous warnings etc. And if I had known asking for you help was I viable option I would have done. I am a complete noob in this area (just quite a coder and a fast learner).

I am happy to work with you and your API to make a proper version. I live in the UK and pay my TV licence so that was why I developed it in the first place. Was not trying to cause any issues.

Let me know if you want to work with me to develop a proper plugin.

I am a little annoyed that even though the amount of work I put into this, that omega was able to claim as his own only after a minor update and then submit it to dj_gerbil at tvc as his own work and for the both of them to start developing from.

I would have submitted mine anyway and if either had bothered to ask me, instead of running away with it, they would have known I had got much further along the line with a second version (with even more effort put in).

so I am releasing my latest version in this post (well on both forums). It will prob be my last attempt at any plugin for xbmc. Feel free to use it or do whatever with.

Credit where credit is due, any attempt to help with 3rd party addons for xbmc is a sure fire winner with me and i can probably speak for most of the team to they sure like to see there hard work utilised to.

fantaman32, just tried your latest version with xbmc babylon 9.04.1 on xbox.

when i get the channel list some of the channels dont get thumbnails. also when i press on any channel i get a script error "python script failed", therfore plugin not working

also i noticed with all the tvc plugins so far that the xbox cpu is at 85%-100% all the time which when auto temp control is set in system settings causes the fan to spin up to a extreamely loud state ruining the watching of TV. is there not some way to reduce cpu usage as i dont get this problem with other plugins like the bbc iplayer plugin.

and browseing another channel for listings whilst watching a channel sends cpu to 100% and locks the xbox up

Perhaps creating a google code project would a useful step. That would allow invited developers to contribute via svn, code review, document and host downloads.

ok fair enough. Maybe I misunderstood a bit and kinda threw my toys out the pram. I am glad Omega updated my plugin whilst I was away (because obviously I was away) but I would have appreciated some courtesy.

I am happy to work together and I think a google code site is a brilliant idea (dink). I just have 2 questions, why the password protected zips for the releases on the tvc forums? and what are TVC's requirements exactly? Is it just so you know how many people are using it? - I can send you download counts so far - 211 (for both versions).

I did update the link, maybe you got the old one? also check you changed the username and password in the default.py file.

Not all the thumbnails work because they don't officially exist on the server! the api returns a list of the logos. but some of them physically don't exist on the server at the moment? I think it maybe wip on tvc's side.

The thumbnail issue, I think fantaman32 has hit the nail on the head. As for the processor load issue, its not the plug-in that's the problem it'll be with the way XBMC deals with the flash content. The BBC don't encrypted flash streams, where as TVC do and decoding the streams requires more power. I don't think it is limited to just the XboX build either as I've noticed it on my Windows build. Have you used any other plug-in that work with sites using RTMPE and if so do you have the same problems with them?

By us at TVC, as well, as the more people who can enjoy the streams, the more we collectively develop what we want, and at a cost that suits us, not be told what we're going to get and charged a king's ransom for it

That's just the way its been done to allow the 'Now and Next' function to work.

That's the right version. Have you entered your username and password in the plug-in settings?? Also, silly question I know, but are you in the UK??

are there anymore features in the pipeline? i would like to make a quick sugestion. could the channel icon be passed down a level aswell, so when your watching a channel you can press the info button to bring up the onscreen display and get the channel icon where the video thumbnail is suposed to be displayed? currently you just get the skin default video icon because theres no thumb asociated with the stream item that you select to play the stream

wow thats a massive compliment.

Personally I think its got a little ways to go yet before it can compete with a system where you can just press a number button on the remote and get an immediate switch of channel. I dont think you could really say its better than a sky box.. EPG for a start.

I don't have the freezing issue (in linux). But it has stopped working today so I'm assuming another update has been made to the site. They seem to be rewriting a lot of the underlying api I think at the moment so it keeps changing (several times a week at the moment).

I will fix when I get the chance (hopefully tomorrow).

All you have to do is read the last few post to see that the plugin is broken and fanftaman will be sorting it hopefully sunday

Have put a temporary fix together for the plugin to get it up and running again. Thumbnails and now/next functionalities have been broken by the latest changes but I will solve at some point soon.

[XBOX]-related feedback...

I'm running XBMC, the Babylon build, and TVC plugin v2.1 tempfix. Channel thumbnails don't work and the now/next thing doesn't appear to either, but when the TVC site has enough bandwidth the channels work well and the video quality is pretty damn good. As my freeview box isn't working properly this plugin is a big help, so thanks to everyone who's worked on it!

It was originally because when you clicked the channel it displayed both the show now and the show on next. With a recent update to the site and the "tempfix" it now only displays the current show.

I'm not really sure whether they will be implementing the next functionality back into the API soon and whether this is a temporary change so at the moment I'm just waiting to see. (seems a bit like a waste of time until tvcatchup.com stop making all the changes they have been recently)

I am brand new to Xbmc and new to ubuntu, I managed to get Xbmc working on my ubuntu machine and set up with my Movies and Music.

I had no idea things like this were possible and I absolutly MUST HAVE this plugin.

One Problem!

I haven't a clue what to do.

Please could some body explain to me in step by step simple points how I go from normal xbmc to having this plugin installed.

changes to the site have caused the 'Now Showing' lable on the stream file to no longer show. also not all channels are appearing. for instance Dave De Ja Vu always shows but Dave never shows even though its runnung on the website. however the streams still run fine.

Seems to be fixed again at the sites end, so "now showing" is displayed correctly.

Now I have gotten to the bottom of it as you had a double account on TVCatchup the same as you do here under rlees85 (http://xbmc.org/forum/member.php?u=49430) and C-Quel (http://xbmc.org/forum/member.php?u=295) and our moderators banned both accounts at the same time, which you cannot blame us for as our TOS strictly says people are not allowed double accounts.

As for when are they going to stop making changes, they had some stream reliability issues and a few hardware problems too, but from what I can gather they're starting to roll out some of the things they took down so with luck not long now.

It sounds to me like it can't write to the file as its write protected. The problem is that I'm no expert on the xbox, in fact I don't own one :sniffle: What I'd suggest as a temp fix if you fancy editing the python script is scroll down to the bit that says "def check_settings" and change the uname= and pwd= to your username and password. Hope that helps.

I'm using the xbox and have never had any problems with the user name password. Did you overwrite the old plugin??? There shouldn't be any permission's issues a fresh install of the plugin may help. Other than that i have no idea what could be causing this behaviour.

Yeah it's odd alright, I'll try another complete re-install but have already tried deleting the old one and replacing with new to no avail. If all else fails I'll try dj_gerbils fix in the default.py

same thing happens to me. It comes with asking for username and password and then shows chanells. When i press a chanell it asks for username and password again, then comes up with python error message.

Sorry, My mistake. The bit you need to edit is at the bottom of the script and looks like this:
check_settings()
uname = xbmcplugin.getSetting('uname')
pwd = xbmcplugin.getSetting('pwd')

and you need to change it to this:
#check_settings()
uname = 'your username'
pwd = 'your password'

That should work. Let me know if it doesn't.

It may be posible, the only problem is that altough the now and next isn't working at the moment, it's how the information is displayed. However, as you're the second person to ask, I'll have a look later and see what I can do.

Unfortunately TVC have introduced some new security measures that have broken the plugin. The other problem we have is that due to the open source nature of XBMC and the fact that python scripts can be read by anyone, the site are reluctant to give me the necessary information to fix the plugin. But we haven't given up yet.

Ok, so I've got good news and I've got bad news. The good news is that I've got the plugin partly working. Now for the bad news. Due to the some 'Security Issues' namely that XBMC and its plugins are open source, we can not directly access the API. As a result we've had to temporally adopt a web based solution. In other words the plugin now passes the page from XBMC to the browser of your choice for viewing, returning to XBMC afterwards. The problem with this is that it now limits the plugin to only working on the Windows/Linux and possibly Mac platforms. I've got one more tiny bug to work out, once I've done that I'll publish a download link for people to try. Sorry its not better news, but hey at least its not completely dead.
Someone asked me about the web browser for the Xbox, but I don't know if it can handle flash, so if anyone has any ideas please le me know.

Well the other chain of thought is to somehow encrypt the plugin so that the API security is not compromised, but at the moment I'm not much further with that either.

yes a standalone app for the xbox is a great idea. would make integrating the tv guide alot easier. would need to have options to return to xbmc etc, so that it still felt like part of the complete media centre experience.

what ever you decide, i hope its soon, i cant describe how much i miss this plugin since i dont have a freeview box and my PC with the tuner in is currently in a frazzled state waiting to go back to the manufacture for repair. so iv no freeview at all.

I can't say I'm too fussed about the back to xbmc function to me the main things are

* that I can select a channel
* that I can watch a channel
* that I can switch between channels
* a tv guide would be nice but I'm really not bothered about that at all as xbmc already has that in the mytv script.

it's an obfuscator, It jumbles up the code to make it unreadable whilst keeping it functionally the same. I'm just gonna try it out and see what happens.

I dont know if this helps at all (at least for a bit) but an iPhone version now exists - iPhone.tvcatchup.com (in beta). 11 channels, no login needed.

It works well. Can't tell you any more than that, but presume if stream can be played by xbox then it just needs to 'ape' an iphone, like iplayer plugin? Example URL below:

At the moment you do need a web browser to use it yes. As for the security issues, I don't want to get peoples hopes up, but I'm quietly optimistic that a solution may be here soon.
