New user having issues with repositories.

Hello,

I have XBMC on my 1.5 xbox at home, and it is AWESOME!!!! You guys at XBMC are great, and I thank you for all your efforts.

Last weekend, I bought and built a new computer for a LinuXBMC. I install Ubuntu 9.04. The install goes great. I come over here, find some (3 different) instructions for installing XBMC in ubuntu, and it worked. XBMC runs and all! Great! I had only installed the core stuff, so I started adding skins and scripts and some other stuff.

1st complaint - WTF is all that stuff that is available for install? I can see that some of it is development stuff, but other stuff if you select it, it wants to uninstall other things...

Anyways, I did that and I think that one of the items to be removed was fast user switching. Anyways after installing the new stuff, and rebooting, the computer no longer boots to the gui.

Screw that. Looks like I don't want to uninstall anything. Okay. I install Ubuntu again, formatting the disk.

SINCE THEN I have not been able to install XBMC again. I don't know what is up. Starting from a fresh install, I go to the software sources and add both the deb and deb-src lines, one at a time to the list.

I ignore the key error message. (on a side note, even following the instructions, three times, I coudn't add the key using the GUI. I have seen stuff on adding it using a CLI command, I'll try that tonight.) So I ignore the key message and refresh. Great. I close software sources, then open the sanaptic installer manager (or whatever) and refresh. I search for XBMC and nothing comes up.

I have tried this like 4 times. each time reinstalling ubuntu from scratch. I'm a little frustrated.

I'm clearly new with Linux but I can normally follow instructions...

I don't know what to do. Sorry for the sparse information. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Did you install the XBMC Live package, or the XBMC only session package?

These are used if all you do with your machine is run XBMC.

If you are using your machine for other stuff within ubuntu, don't install them.

Please let us know which packages you installed, and why you installed them, so that we can improve the documentation.

Jonathan, thank you very very much for the reply. I can't even get to the point where I can download anything. I enter the repositories but the packages don't seem to appear when I search for them.

I will try again and post more details tonight.

If you are new to linux, why don't you use the Live CD to install everything for you?

Installed Ubuntu 9.04 again so that I have a fresh start.

One at a time to the software sources using the add button on the Third Party sources tab.. I hit close and get the following error:

There was a status bar that seemed like it was searching for new software. Software sources then terminated.

Then save it as xbmc-key.key .

Then open up software sources again > authentication tab > import and choose my file.

No error. I think other times I got an error here...

I open up Syntpac package manager and get an error:

Click the reload button in the upper left corner and search for xbmc in the search box on the right.

Sorry, Ive done this whole thing like 5 times now... I don't know what I was doing wrong. Anyways now that you read (hopefully) this whole thing.... Would you give me a tip on getting the key error fixed?

@prae5 - What's wrong with learning? I've tried the live CD. It works great. I want to be able to browse the Internet on my TV. Also want to one day try the Wiimote remote for XBMC.

In the package manager I select xbmc (which auto-selects xbmc-common)

I also select the two skin files:
xbmc-skin-pm3
xbmx-skin-pm3-hd

and xbmx-web-pm2 is also selected.

Click apply, and then again after the warning that my packages coudn't be authenticated.

Downloading now.

Right at the bottom, there are some software sources links for Addons and 3rd party PPA.
I enther the following two links:

Now, you might be asking: Hardy? I thought you had Ubuntu 9.04 which is jaunty What's up with that. Well up two posts when I was entering the main xbmc software source, I must have chose the wrong one. Whatever it works. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If someone would inform me the difference, that would be awesome!

Click close, then get the key error again :(

Go to synaptic package manager and then reload. Search for xbmc... NO NEW SKINS!! hmm maybe that hardy thing up there DOES make a difference. I close SPM and go to software sources again, the third party sources tab and select the two lines I just added. I click edit and change hardy to jaunty on both. Close out of that... hmm this time I got a double key error.

Open SPM and reload... No new skins still.

hmm.

gotta make dinner now.... I have two issues still:

1) The key error
2) getting the skins package source to work.

then to add the key...
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 318C7509

to figure this out..look at the launchpad page for the repository.. ie. https://launchpad.net/~team-xbmc/+archive/jaunty-ppa and the key i entered above is there..."318C7509" it also has a link to instructions.

Then sudo apt-get update
then you can continue using the package manager.

Oops...sorry the key I gave was for the xbmc addons repository...and then the link I gave to the page was the xbmc respository...
Here is the page where you would find the key:

If you look at the url you can see how it relates to the actual ppa source url...ie http://ppa.launchpad.net/xbmc-addons/ppa/ubuntu

I don't see the realation... http vs https, ~xbmc~addons vs xbmc~addons, +archive/ppa vs /ppa/ubuntu.

I'm sorry if it is obvoius, but I don't see it. There are a number of changes. Maybe you can help by being more specific:

Near the bottom is a section for "Addons and 3rd party PPA". Note how there are no "jaunty" entries. What two lines would you enter into the software sources dialogue box?

Should I extrapolate and use:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/xbmc-addons/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/xbmc-addons/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

Once I get that, how do I find the key that I need to add. You supplied a link in your post. Will that link contain the key I am lookin for, or do I have to derive the link somehow from the above information?

I already said how to add that one in my earlier post. But yes, you just change the 2nd argument to the build you have aka. Jaunty... It's likely that the forum how to just hasn't been updated since Jaunty was released (not too long ago). The other builds will normally work too however.


If you look at the above url. The repository name is "xbmc-addons" you can goto launchpad.net and search for that... or the url format is fairly straight forward.
https://launchpad.net/~xbmc-addons/+archive/ppa. the "xbmc-addons" is the part you would see from the deb lines above.

On that page you'll see:
This repository is signed with 1024R/318C7509 OpenPGP key. Follow these instructions for installing packages from this PPA.

And there is the key I also mentioned earlier. There is several ways to add the keys, mayb theres a more straightforward method. This is just how i do it usually.

EDIT: I forgot the simplest way to find the key... When you run sudo apt-get update and you dont have the key you'll get a message like....
