Plugin Issues
If you are having a problem with the plugin or just have a query please do read the documentation and do a search of this thread before posting.
If you believe you have found a bug or would like to request a feature then create a new issue (http://code.google.com/p/xbmc-iplayerv2/issues/list).
Plugin Limitations
This plugin doesn't work outside of the UK. The BBC IPlayer service ensures that only UK IP addresses can access IPlayer content.
For Live TV a Windows or Linux build of at least SVN:21747 (2009-07-18) is required. For XBox support use a build of at least SVN:21819 .
For Windows and Linux users some of the Radio streams don't work. XBMC on Windows and Linux does not support the rtsp:// protocol which is needed by some of the catchup and live radio streams.
This plugin supports the Flash H.264 HD streams but needs an XBMC build, Windows or Linux, SVN:20015 or later. Configure video streams via the plugins settings.
This plugin supports Flash H.264 800Kb streams on the XBox but needs at least a build SVN:20810.
This plugin supports the Flash AAC radio streams but needs an XBMC build, Windows or Linux, SVN:20015 or later. Configure audio streams via the plugins settings.

Hi Dink, Cheers for sorting out the onscreen episode info/thumb, however there is a way of telling xbmc to treat the info as Movie info or TV Show info. At the moment xbmc treats it as a movie so the thumb background is designed for a poster, if you were to tell xbmc to treat it as an episode, then the thumb would be displayed on the correct background and the plot box would fill the area from one side of the screen to the other.
hope you understand what i mean. if not try watching a tv show and Movie from your library and check out the onscreen info in PM3.HD and you should notice the difference.
Not really a bug but would definatley finish off the plugin.
PS Cheers for all the hard work, this has to be the best plugin ever made for xbmc

I've looked and I can't see the mechanism to do this.
When listing a set of tv episodes I can use xbmcplugin.setContent(handle=handle, content='episodes') but since the the streams are not kicked off directly from the directory listing I only have xbmcgui.ListItem and xbmc.PlayList object methods available. This comes down to using listitem.setInfo('video', .... setinfo only seems to understand video, music or pictures.
Is it possible for you to give me a specific example.
BTW this would have been a good item for http://code.google.com/p/xbmc-iplayerv2/issues/list
Cheers

Hi dink,
I've just copied the newest version of your plugin to my XBMC-9.04-BABYLON-FINAL-T3CH.
Unfortunately, i have problems with video speed :/ it's like 3 times faster than sound ;)
I tried changing video quality, switching subtitles on and off but still no joy :/
What could be the problem?
I just add that previous version I was using (iplayer-2009-03-06b) works just fine.

You need to switch the video quality to Flash (512). From your description it sounds like a H.264 stream playing on a build which doesn't properly support it.
Cheers
Dink
Thanks for that!
I'll try that later on :)

to be honest dink i havent seen it implimented in any other plugin as far as i can remember. just noticed it in Library / TV Shows OSD and asumed it would be a callable command in the plugin code. must just be a XBMC Library feature and not in the plugin engine. it will probably have to be requested as a new xbmc feature. il put a request in on the trac when i get a spare sec.

I'm having a lot of trouble in the Settings page. As soon as I go in there, it pops up another window on top "Loading directory: retrieved 0 items" with only a Cancel button. Pressing Cancel changes the title of that window to "canceling..." (sic) and then locks up the xbox.
Any ideas please?
I should add that the rest of the plugin seems to work fine. Using T3CH XBMC 2009-05-09 9.04-Babylon build.

I am running IPlayer-2009-05-14.zip with the latest release XBMC 9.04.1 (20542), but it still have the issue of the video playing faster than the audio.
My settings: WinXP, dual core athlon XP (cpu at 30% on load), 2gigs, nvidia 9600GT and 12Mb/s internet. The issue shows up on any H.264 stream, no matter what's the quality setting (auto works tho).
Thanks for the ongoing work!

auto on that revision should be H.264 800. If you search in the log for CDVDVideoCodecFFmpeg that will confirm either VP6 or H.264.
It may be time for you to experiment with the video player settings Home Screen -> System -> Videos -> Player. There you can change the render method, upscaling method and set various sync settings.
If that doesn't work please do check that you have up to date video and audio drivers.
If that doesn't work can you please post a debug log using http://pastebin.com/

Indeed now auto has the same issue. When I tried it it was the one I got from the repo installer (which I suppose used flash?).

I tried all of them with no luck. I was not upscaling and the rest used default settings.

I am using the nvidia 182.06 drivers. They are not the latest but they were pretty stable (compared to older versions) so I am not that eager to update.

Hi. Great plugin.
I've been using the old standard definition one for a while with no problems, Now trying the HD version. Using plugins settings -> video stream to use as "auto" it selects the H264 (800Kb) stream (I think). It works well for about 4 mins then the xbox freezes. I think it's down to a memory leak. Debug log is here:
http://pastebin.com/m6e3e7153
If I manually change the video stream setting to Flash (512Kb) is works perfectly, but obviously pic quality not as good.
Any ideas why? Am I running the wrong xbmc build? I updated to the latest I could find after some picture "stuttering" issues on the previous version I was using.
Thanks,
Dabberdave

It's the memory leak I'm afraid. The patch for the memory leak is in the linux/windows branch (http://xbmc.org/trac/changeset/20463)but it hasn't yet been merged onto the xbox branch. When it does and a build is available I will let you know.

Decent spec'ed machine and very recent build which shouldn't be a problem.
I can only think of a couple of things to try incase they make a difference
drop the display resolution from 1920x1200 to 1280x720 or even lower
try the build at http://code.google.com/p/xbmc-iplayerv2/downloads/list it works well for me.
Turn the PC off then on again ;-)

Yup, even if it's a bit dated I never had any trouble playing any content up to 720p.

20466 worked, even on 720p, thanks!!!!
I wonder what was the regression that introduced the problem!
Now we just need resume option on the iplayer and it will be perfect! ;)
Cheers!
I might have found another issue. With one BBC HD stream (The Incredible Human Journey, Asia) the player stops invariably after 50 seconds of perfect play. Here's the (debug on) log:
http://pastebin.com/m350256e
update: false alarm, it fails also on bbc's website.. :p
I've just tried the h264 streams on my XBOX and they do look much better than the flash versions. Motion still looks very much compressed, but colour quantisation and artifacts are reduced.
I'm looking forward to a fix to the memory leak so I can watch more than 4 mins.

Many thanks! Now that I've got in there I have a tiny (quite picky really) suggestion. For the "thumbnail size" option, pressing "down" makes the size go up which I think is the wrong way around :) Eg if the size is "small", you press down, but the size goes up to "large". It would be nice if the sizes were listed in the other order so that pressing "up" made the size go up.

I'm looking forward to a fix to the memory leak so I can watch more than 4 mins.Ditto, is there a ticket for it which someone can point me at?
Separately, I've noticed another effect - settings set to use Flash video, Xbox locks up in the same way as H.264 but seems to be less predictable (i.e. could be 4 mins, could be forty). One potential correlation is that it might be co-incident with a dropped (ADSL) internet connection*. Can anyone confirm whether dropping the internet connection during playback causes a lock-up for them?
Keep up the good work.
* Note to self: must get the TelCo to fix the noisy line.

The ticket (http://xbmc.org/trac/ticket/5548) is closed because the issue is fixed.
What we're waiting for is the fix (r20463, see http://xbmc.org/trac/changeset/20463) to be merged from SVN across into the xbox branch. So you search for r20463 in trac:
http://xbmc.org/trac/search?q=r20463&noquickjump=1&ticket=on&changeset=on&milestone=on&wiki=on
right now I can see:
[20580]: merged: r20463 from linuxport
but this refers to a different build.
When you see an xbox build (say from t3ch) which contains in the changelog something like this line:
(some number) [XBOX] Merged: Linuxport revisions ..... 20463....
then that build will include the fix.
HTH
Regarding using this with a proxy, I've had *some* success on linux using proxychains as a proxifier. I had to set it to use SOCKS4 rather than 5, static single chain. I'm not totally sure if the problems I've been having are the plugin or the proxying, but I have managed to get the flash streams to work at least. I got the h.264 streams to work on occasion too, though the sound and video were out of sync (video was playing as fast as it could).

Just found Justin.tv on your sig - great stuff, seems to be working great. Only problem I'm having with it is (in library mode) when you get to the 3rd level of folders it shows plugin name and not the correct details - eg Home-Sports-Soccer everything will be displayed as Justin.tv instead of what game it is but this is a problem we had before with xbmc. I think when they corrected the issue they only corrected it for one sub category and any more after that still have the same old problem. I've submitted it as a bug on TRAC #6683
Well done on the Justintv thing though - I think this is going to be very popular indeed.

Works a treat! Great quality on my xbox. :-)
I have one query, dink. Would it be possible to change the interface to be more like
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/bigscreen/
or is that not technically possible with the current plugin framework?
Either way, this plugin (and the H264 support) is a great achievement.

Loving the latest build of this plugin. (using the unnofficial build)
Currently have my internet vid cache set to 4096KB which is ideal for my connection speed when viewing HIGH quality AMT trailers.
It's also fine for iPlayer video content. However, using the iPlayer radio.. I am forced to wait for 4096kb to stream in before it starts to play. XBMC seems to recognise the audio stream as a video stream? Is this because I am launching the stream from within "My Videos"?
I would have presumed xbmc would see the iPlayer radio (set as MP3) is an audio stream and just buffered 256kb of cache before playing.
Anyone know whats up? It dampens the experience somewhat having to wait 10seconds (roughly) before the radio kicks in. (I have a 10meg line by the way).
-by the way is there a reason the radio stations (listen live) take so long to kick in?

Someone with more skinning experience may be able to correct me (and perhaps provide an appropriate skin) but as the the IPlayer script is implemented as a plugin all it can provide is a simple directory listing. You can changed how the directory is listed by changing the "View:" option.

It is to do with the protocols used by the various radio streams and how XBMC is able or unable to properly categorize them. Catchup uses rtmp:// for MP3 & AAC. RTMP has it's own cache setup so is quite quick to kick off. Catchup can also use rtsp:// (it's the last fallback as it's always available). Live radio uses a mixture of mms:// and rtsp:// . XBMC ususally uses "Cache unknown" for these so try modifing that if a progress bar with a large cache value pops up.

exactley what dink said.
i set my unknown internet cache to 256kb and then the radio streams buffer as quick as any other audio stream like shoutcast.

Nice idea, I already tried setting unknown cache to 256kb but for me, more often than not the mp3 radio streams on iplayer don't come under that category. And thus continue to cache 4MB before they start. If I set my internet vid cache to 2MB that helps, but it's still not really ideal.

http://xbmc.org/trac/search?q=r20463&noquickjump=1&ticket=on&changeset=on&milestone=on&wiki=on
right now I can see:
[20580]: merged: r20463 from linuxport
but this refers to a different build.
When you see an xbox build (say from t3ch) which contains in the changelog something like this line:
(some number) [XBOX] Merged: Linuxport revisions ..... 20463....
then that build will include the fix....and I see that 20810 merged it to the XB0X branch. Great info MrTickle, and thanks also to the others, inc Stacked and Dink for the XB0X builds and plugin.
I, for one, didn't know until now that nightly XB0X builds are available (here: http://www.sshcs.com/xbmc/?mode=BX), so thanks also for that.

Indeed - excellent news. Actually my search link above won't find it because I included the "r" - but this does:
http://xbmc.org/trac/search?q=20463&noquickjump=1&ticket=on&changeset=on&milestone=on&wiki=on
and there in all its glory, it is!
t3ch has build "T3CH XBMC 2009-06-01 9.04.1-FIXED-Babylon" available to download (t3ch updater script doesn't pick it up) - but manual download and ftp to xbox and then let the updater pick it up after rename of rar (to T3CH XBMC YYYY-MM-DD SVN rev99999.rar) works a treat.
Watching high quality stream H264 (the lowest quality of 3) now and looks brilliant and perfect, much improved over flash.
Just need to watch my download cap now!!
Cheers to Dink, t3ch, Johnsto, BigBellyBilly and all the XBMC team :grin::grin: (oh and the BBC ;-)

I'm afraid I still have the problem with the Loading window appearing on top of the settings window. This is with a fresh install of the T3ch 9.04.1-FIXED-Babylon build.

That is a weird one. I tried but couldn't duplicate. I would think it is something odd about your install and would really need to see a debug log to try and figure out what is going on.
What skin are you using. If not PM3 then switch to that and try again.
Does your xbox show any other symptoms or in the past did an install corrupt? If so an install into a clean dir rather than an upgrade might help.

No other symptoms, sorry! This was a clean install, except for replacing my Userdata folder afterwards (I'm not willing to rebuild my music library from scratch!). I do use PM3. I'll do a debuglog for you tomorrow.

Apologies for the delay. I've put the debug log here:
http://pastebin.com/m619e729b
I've highlighted a couple of things which I thought were weird. Such as why is there no full path when it's looking for the settings, it just has "iplayer/".
After the last line of the debug log which says it is stopping the script, nothing happens. The "cancelling" window has the focus and I have to reboot the xbox.
If there's anything else you need me to provide please let me know. Ta :)
Just tried it with the latest Nightly Build and its great!
Thank you very much! easily as good as freeview (in my area) with the 800kbps 264 streams. :D
Try this version of the plugin IPlayer-2009-06-09.zip (http://xbmc-iplayerv2.googlecode.com/files/IPlayer-2009-06-09.zip). I have changed the settings entry from being a virtual directory to being a virtual file which may fix your issue.

Had a chance to really gets to grips with this plugin now and it continues to impress, especially now the high quality streams are working. Thanks.
However, I've got one minor quibble. Why can't you search for categories of programme e.g. "comedy" across all channels? At the moment you need to select a channel, e.g. BBC2, before then selecting "comedy". On the iPlayer website it allows you to browse all comedy across all channels.
Or am I missing something? Or maybe there's a techy reason why it can't be done?
Anyway, thanks again. Brilliant plugin overall!

Some [XBOX]-based feedback...
This v2 iPlayer plugin is top notch, well done! It doesn't crash the box when you get to the end of the stream like v1 did, and it makes a lot of difference setting the stream to 800kB H.264 instead of 512kB Flash. In fact the only downside with the thing is that the Xbox can't process the two highest quality settings due to limited CPU power, but the 800kB one looks nearly as good as Freeview anyway. (I missed the Queen's tennis final but watched it on the box... great match it was too).
It didn't work with the may 2009 T3CH build but is nigh-on flawless with the stable Babylon build, released 1st June. Anyone having problems getting it running should try a clean install of that version before posting here.
RTMP now open ..?

Hi all
I'm assuming this is hopefully the right place to post for issues with the iplayerv2 plugin.
I downloaded the plugin just over week or so ago and ensured it was all up-to-date - all worked very well and even better with the H264 build. Gone on to use it tonight and still working but all the listings appear stale from the last time I used it over a week ago. No newer build available in checker.
Any ideas?
Also, any idea when the fast fwd and rewind will appear? If you fall foul of the pause timeout it can be tough starting over :)
Cheers
For the stale listings I would need to see a log to try and figure out what is going on .
No idea I'm afraid on seek or pause within RTMP streams. There is a feature request thread about this at http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=48039

Firstly thanks for producing such a marvellous plugin. I have installed XBMC using the Ubuntu PPA repositories (xbmc - 9.04.1-jaunty1) and the latest version of the iplayer v2 plugin (IPlayer-2009-06-13.zip). I am finding that the sound is quite far ahead of the video.
Is there any settings I can change to fix this? Anything else I can do.
Many thanks

There are a few things that you can try.
First one is to experiment with is audio sync which seeks to bring the audio and video back into sync. These settings can be found at"Main/Home Menu" -> "Settings" -> "Video" -> "Player" .
If that don't do the trick while playing a video bring up the context menu, select audio settings and change the "Audio Offset".

I should also say that I am running this on an Acer Aspire Revo which has an Atom/Ion combo so it needs to use VDPAU to get decent video performance

Are you sure you are using VDPAU? Unless it is explicitly selected under Settings -> Video -> Player -> Render Method it will not be used.
I might be really thick, but I cannot see the audio sync options in the player section (http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=Videos_Settings#Player). Do I need to upgrade to the latest SVN? Thanks.
VDPAU definitely set on.
I am very impressed with the quality of a 3.2meg stream. Thank you for this plugin.
But why does it take so long (6 to 8 seconds) in between sections? Can that be speeded up?

If they are not being displayed then it look like SVN is the way you need to go.

I take it by sections you mean each listing/page. One approach which might help is to use only the smallest thumbnails. This can be changed in the plugin settings.

Hi all,
Have read the entire thread through, and unless I've missed something, is the only way to get the 800kbps H.264 streams work on the Xbox without it freezing after 4-5 minutes is to use the stable Babylon build?
It's just that I'm using the stable T3CH release (May 2009) at the moment, and have had no problems with it so far - apart from this freezing issue! I just wondered if the SVN build of T3CH (26th June) fixes this issue? I don't know what I'm looking for in the changelog on there, so I can't work it out for myself!
If it doesn't fix the issue, and I have to use the Babylon build, will I notice anything different about the overall usage of XBMC? I've only had the Xbox for about 2 weeks... But I love how stable it is, and from what I've read, the T3CH builds are the ones to trust. But I could be completely wrong, I admit n00b status in the XBMC field.
Thanks for any feedback :)
P.s. if I do have to settle for the Babylon build, would some kind soul mind either posting instructions or PM'ing me how to update my XBMC build to this one via FTP? Would love you forever!
Either the stable 2009-06-01 or the very latest 2009-06-27 T3CH builds will work just fine with the 800kbps H.264 streams . I have used both these builds and they have proven stable and will work in almost exactly the same manner as the May 2009 build. Most of the changes are under the hood.
Upgrade instructions are here http://www.xbmc.org/wiki/?title=Installing_XBMC_for_Xbox#Upgrade_XBMC_for_X BOX

Hi,
I have iplayer up and running on the xbox but the sound quality is poor. When it starts up it is a lot louder than the volume would be for any other xbmc video and i think it is this that is causing the issue.
I can turn the volume down on the tv and via the analogue stick on xbmc but the distortion is still there and it get worse if there is loud action the screen so i belive its an issue with the volume of the stream.
I'm running the XBMC-9.04.1-FIXED-BABYLON-T3CH build, the date on the read me files contained in it is June 2009. I believe this is the latest one stable version?
any ideas on whats causing this?
keep up the good work!
Any chance you could parse the BBC ONE and TWO live streams? I'll get the code side working if the script can at least pull the auth etc.

Not sure what's going on here at all It could very well be a hardware issue. First thing I suggest is to check for loose connects. If that doesn't work then alter some of the audio settings to see if they make a change.
Under Main Menu -> Settings -> Video -> Player -> Configure audio hardware
or
When playing a video pop up the context menu and select the audio settings.

Hi Folks
I have updated the IPlayer plugin with support for Live BBC TV. To use this feature you will need a Windows or Linux build of at least SVN:21747 (2009-07-18). No XBox support as yet - the XBMC librtmp patches have yet to be merged.
The IPlayer-2009-07-19.zip update can be downloaded from http://code.google.com/p/xbmc-iplayerv2/ . I will update the SVN rep later today if no problems are reported.
Many thanks to motd2k who updated librtmp.

Ive just started compiling xbmc for xbox yesterday although I have followed this and the previous thread since it started, so forgive my lack of terminoligy and general newbieness :)
The latest RTMP changes have been backported to the xbox svn branch yesterday (20/07/09). Unfortunately I think this has broken the iplayer plugin. The plugin launches but shows audio only (no video). I tried the june Iplayer plugin as well as the July one and they both have the same error.
I initially though this may of been an error on my behalf whilst compiling so I downloaded a nightly 21810 build and it is the same.
On the (ever so) positive side, the bbc live stream launches with this build (it refused to load on 21759 build), but again its audio only.
Apologies if this is not the correct place to ask but how do we fix it?
P.s. Dink thanks so much for everything you (and johnsto) have gived to the Iplayer plugin, i think its absolutely wonderful.

Paul

I dont know if this has been queried before, but I have a problem that once I select say "popular" section, the plugin will not refresh any listings until I delete the html data in the user data subfolder.
Any ideas? This has been an ongoing issue no matter which version I've used with any xmbc version.
Looking at the httplib2 library caching functionality which the Iplayer plugin uses there are references to the current system time. If the current system time is way out then this could be the root of the problem. So can you set your xbox ( I presume ) to sync with a network time server.
Goto: Settings -> Appearance -> Region
Then enable internet time sync and change the time server host to a ntp server such as pool.ntp.org .

I'll turn it on and see how annoying it gets.

keep up the good work motd2k its much appreciated:)
You can't really fast forward any stream, fast forward would require pulling the stream 2/4/8/16 times faster than normal, which isn't possible. What it does allow is pushing the 'jump' button and skipping forward 1 or 10mins, and also pressing the numbers on your remote control to 'type' in the desired hour:minute you want to skip to.

I think the trick may be the line with "Out of memory". Try using the PM3.HD skin at 720p or lower as it is quite easy to exhast memory on an xbox. You can also enable debugging to view memory usage.

You're quite right!
I've actually droppped the MC360 skin down to 720p and that's sorted it! All is well!

Thanks for your help!
I've added RTMP seek support in r21929 (http://xbmc.org/trac/changeset/21929). You can now either type a location to skip to using the number buttons on the keyboard or remote, or use skip.

Thanks motd2k. Skipping now works well on my Linux box.

Hi Folks
I have made a small update which fixes a problem with the BBC HD channel. Recent changes to the media selector xml from the BBC site resulted in an unsupported stream being selected.
The update is available at
http://xbmc-iplayerv2.googlecode.com/files/IPlayer-2009-08-17.zip
I will make it available via SVN later today (if no problems are reported)

@dink: I gave a try to the new skipping support. It's all great except that the plugin does not seem to support the automatic resume or the bookmarking features.
Is that a limitation of the current release of XBMC?
I am using IPlayer 2009-08-17 and XBMC 22252 (PC).

Yup that's a current XBMC limitation. Hopefully someone like motd2k who is familiar with the C++ RTMP code can add this at some point.

I have added your latest Iplayer HD plugin and the audio is out of sync, it appears that my video is slightly slow but the audio is running at the correct speed, so eventually the video is way out of sync.

Had the same problem....updated xbmc, updated plugin and changed stream to h.264(800kb) in the plugin settings and its working again nicely.
A big thanks to all those that have kept up the development of this plugin!!

This is probably due to your PC not being able to keep up with decoding the HD video. If you are using Linux I would suggest trying VDPAU and checking out the the following forum for more info http://www.xbmc.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=52
Some other options are listed at http://www.xbmc.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=52

I suspect it is the latest version of the plugin which is doing the trick here. It has been modified to better process the xml file which lists the available streams. This was effecting BBC HD programmes but it seems also some programmes listed on other channels.
Cheers
Dink
Ok, I think I've got to the bottom of the problem. It appears some programmes broadcast on BBC HD are using the BBC HD listing on other channels as well. This wouldn't be an issue except that only a couple of usable streams are listed a 720p one and a Flash Wii stream. This caused a problem as the plugin had assumed that every programme had a H.264 800 stream it could fallback onto.
I've "solved" the problem by extending the video stream selection fallback mechanism to include the Flash Wii stream. It works but is a bit blocky. I can't fallback onto the 720p stream as many devices can't render this correctly.
A version of the plugin with this fix is available at http://code.google.com/p/xbmc-iplayerv2/ . If no one reports a problem I will put it up on SVN tomorrow.

Just tried manually downloading the iplayer plugin and manual install over ftp. Now it tries to load the video, but comes up with an error message a few mins later:
Error

Too many consecutive failed items
[OK]
So would love iPlayer to work on my xbox as I dont have any decent TV! :D

Hi there,
I've been working on adding proxy support to iplayerv2.
I have a UK proxy setup and can view iplayer on my pc very well but unfortunately it doesn't work with iplayerv2.
Running some tests, I've found that plugins don't seem to use the same internet connection handling as XBMC itself. This means that whatever you set your proxy settings to in XBMC, it still isn't going to work.
I know the party line of "this is UK only" but a lot of people have requested it and I'd like it so I thought I'd try and help.
I have added some httplib2 proxy code around the creation of the HTTP class in iplayerv2.py but it doesn't seem to work properly.
Here is the code:
http = httplib2.Http(proxy_info = httplib2.ProxyInfo(3, '<MYPROXYIP>', <PORTNUM>, None, '<MYPROXYUSERNAME>', '<MYPROXYPASS>'))
At the moment I am hardcoding the proxy values but it could be easily put into the settings page.
Any help on how iplayerv2 communicates with the outside world would be great.
Does the code Player.play(url) use the same HTTP connection as above or does it connect on it's own accord? If so is there proxy support there?
Thanks in advance
Richard

Probably worth a try installing the plugin via SVN in case there was an install issue. See http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=29911
If this doesn't work I will need to have a look at the xbmc.log . You can upload the file to a site such as http://pastebin.com/ .

Is this still the case on the xbox running latest stable build of XBMC.
I downloaded the recent updateed script which fixed the catch up episodes, radio streaming works great.
THis is a brilliant script I use it every day would love to get the tv streams working.

If you grab and install the r22528 build from http://sshcs.com/xbmc/ live tv streams should start working as this contains motd2k's patches. Also pause and skip will now work on catchup streams.

You the man, stuck that build on my test box and the live tv streaming works perfect now.
Iplayer script is even more completely awesome. News 24 in the kitchen now!
I've installed the latest release of this onto the linux R20654 may 25th xbmc release.
Also running mediastrem 0.97 skin.
It works flawlessly - however the video is not stretched to full screen and instead runs at (presumably) it's native resolution in the upper left of the screen.
Anyway to get it to run full screen?
On the xbox you can just resive it using the centre key on the remote but - it works fine anyway without needing to from what I can see at the xbox aqt least.

I just upgraded to get the ability to step through the stream, but I'm not having much luck.
The first 10 minute step I do (Up on the XBOX remote) takes effect after a few seconds (I presume it empties the buffer), but any subsequent stepping just crashes the XBOX.
And I have absolutely no idea how I can enter a destination time using the XBOX remote - can anyone help here?

So is tracking, resuming and bookmarking supposed to be working under Linux? I am having problems with doing these things on Arch Linux. Fast forward is not very helpful either in getting back to where I want to resume the program (the time indicator is not right and it often exits the stream). I also got the wrong episode of a program once (it was fine in the web player but in xbmc it linked to ep 1 when i clicked 3).
Apologies if I missed something trawling through the forum threads if this was already covered somewhere. Apologies also if i missed something obvious as I havn't been using XBMC very long and this is the first and only python plugin I am using.
I am happy to file issues over at google code in more detail if it turns out these features are supposed to be working.
Thanks for the work devs! It looks very promising!
tracking - can you elaborate?
resuming - not yet supported you have to manually skip to a location
bookmarks - yup supported, each "directory" location within the plugin is a unique bookmarkable location.
Fast Forward - best to use skip with a stream. fast forward assumes you can download at a much increased pace whereas skip is just a jump to a new location.
wrong episode - can you supply details, specific programme and episode please.
Cheers

By tracking I meant seeking or what you call "skipping" to a specific time in the stream. How do you do this?
Can you bookmark a time within a stream? My bookmarks seem to be disappearing.. maybe this is due to something else.
The wrong episode seems fine now. I think I may have gotten confused since I was trying to fast forward the stream which tended to crash it and the episode reused alot of footage from another episode. False Alarm!

Within the video stream use the right arrow key to skip forward 1 minute and the up arrow key to skip forward 10 minutes. Down and left do the opposite.

Not as far as I'm aware. The resume functionality is as close as it gets on XBMC but that isn't available on RTMP streams.

This does not work. It simply interrupts the audio and video , i.e. you get a gap in the audio and the image freezes shortly, but does not skip forward. Fast forward works better! Should I file an issue about this?
Thanks alot for your help dink!

Okay, seriously, I give up.
I've tried this over and over and over and I'm sick of it, every time I try to run this it keeps giving me an error when I try to connect to a channel.
Failed to fetch url...whatever
I've followed the instructions for installing to the letter, I've used so many builds I've lost count (I upgraded from a 3 yr old build just to install it) and I'm at the end of my tether. What the hell am I doing wrong?!?
I think it might be the installation, but seeing as I've followed every guide to the letter I can't see where I'm going wrong, the only thing that makes me think this is the fact I'm having similar success with SVN Repo.

Hey developers!
Love your plugin fellas - it's evolving nicely. Especially happy you can skip through the streams too. Great for watching programs without having to rely on the scheduling!
One thing I think it could do with though; some sort of "saved search" or "favourites" function. This could take commonly searched for programs and check for them upon launching the plugin or something like that. YouTube 3.4c script saves your searches; I'm hoping it isn't hard to implement?
Anyway, keep up the good work!
I'll look into it

I've now upgraded to T3CH r23183 on XBOX and I still can't get skip to work.
I took a look at the log and it was full of database errors, so I reverted to a clean UserData to rule that out - i.e. effectively a new install of XBMC.
Basically, after adding IPlayer to the video sources, I did this:
Selected TV.
Selected BBC One.
Selected Cash in the Attic (yeah, yeah - just testing...)
Selected an Episode.
The XBOX runs the HD for a while (10 seconds+), then finally shows 0.00/57.30 in the bottom left. Nothing happens until I press the Play button, and then it fires into life.
If I then hit Up to skip 10 minutes, the picture corrupts, then after 2 seconds or so, the pause display comes up and is stuck at 00:10 and "Buffering" appears. Nothing then happens until I press Play again, at which time it does start at 10 minutes in.
If I press Up again, it all just hangs.
I've tried this on two seperate Xboxs with identical results.
Something is definitely afoot.
Here's the log I recovered:

So no chance downloading will ever be included? Would be a great addition particulary for people with low bandwidths.

Glad to hear you have a just about sorted your problem. Just 2 thing to note
1) the SVN version of XBMC isn't always stable so the odd crash could be be due to living on the edge.
2) even on an underpowered system if you manage to install an NVidia 8xxx or 9xxx series card under linux you can make use of the GPU to do the H.264 decoding via VDPAU. Suddenly even an underpowered system can easily play the BBC IPlayer 720p streams.

Just a quick question as I cant find a reliable answer elsewhere.
Flash video- full-screen flash, video seems to freeze on my machine after a few minutes (audio continues).. some advised disabling hardware accel in flash settings, but that dosen't fix it, it just delays the inevitable freeze. I get this with iPlayer when I'm using xbmc. Anyone else had this or know how to fix it?
(WinXP Pro SP3, ASRock 330 Ion DualCore 1.6, 2GB ram, NVidia 9400, latest Flash Player)
The system is a pentium 4 with intel graphics (810 series). It manages to play the bbc hd streams fine with your plugin in XBMC. The same cannot be said for viewing in a browser on the iplayer webpage but i do not mind.
How does XBMC play the bbc streams? Are they in a flash format or h264? I am confused about this.
Wasn't and amd/ati backend for video decoding developed before VDPAU?
I will replace the system soon anyway as I cannot upgrade the graphics. It generally struggles in its current role. Any excessive movement on the screen that is not fullscreen video generally makes it sound like an airplane taking off. Sometimes it can't seem to cope with the XBMC menu graphics and crashes. I do still think there is something wrong with the skipping /seeking feature in iplayer plugin but the unstableness of the whole system overall makes it impossible to be sure of this.
The video is encoding in H.264 and transported via Adobe's RTMP protocol. On the IPlayer site the software which decodes the stream and renders the video is a flash plugin. XBMC uses it's own RTMP library to decode the stream and passes the H.264 video data to either it's own (ffmpeg) decoding library or via VDPAU to a NVIDIA GPU.
For hardware decoding there isn't any other option than Linux using the VDPAU api to a NVIDIA GPU. ATI doesn't have a working hardware decoding library under Linux and the windows version of XBMC doesn't yet support any form of hardware decode.
It is quite possible that the intel graphics are a large part of your problem from what I understand they are really very underpowered. The difference between Intel and NVidia graphics is shown in particular by the difference adding an NVidia ION makes to an Atom processor. Something like this (http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/11641853/Acer-Aspire-Revo-R3600L-Intel-Atom-230-1-6GHz-1GB-160GB-Linpus-Linux-Nettop-Desktop-PC/Product.html). If you check under the Linux forum there is lots of info there on this type of platform.

Are you using a recent xbmc revision and are using using VDPAU?

XBMC Windows (so no VDPAU) version, 23393.
XBMC Windows (so no VDPAU) version, 23393.
Things to try:
A later version of xbmc http://xbmc.org/forum/showpost.php?p=423903&postcount=1088
switching off any software upscaling
monitoring CPU usage to see if you are running at 100%
have a look in the logs for error messages
(and if you are up for a bit of an experiment try XBMC live and VDPAU)

Hi All,
I'm having a slight problem with the latest iPlayer plugin. It seems that to get it to work I need to shutdown XBMC, login as root (sudo bash) and then load XBMC back up again. It will then work fine until I shut down the machine. If I don't do this then, I can get as far as the channels only for an error to be thrown up.
I've checked the file privileges and they all seem correct (although I'm no Linux expert).
Just to give you a bit more insight; I've got a minimum Linux setup on an Acer Revo box.
Any help would be welcome.
Thanks,
JJ

I haven't heard of a problem like this before. Has anyone else?
Can you post xbmc logs?

Hi Folks
Just to let you know I have posted a new version of the plugin (2009-10-24) up at http://code.google.com/p/xbmc-iplayerv2/ . The only change is that searches are now saved and listed for future use.
If no one finds any issues with this version I will release via SVN later on.

Hi all,
Today I have upgraded Ubuntu to 9.10 and I have also updated XBMC from the repository.
Everything works fine except the iPlayer plugin the now takes ages to load each directory. Is anybody experiencing the same problem?
Thanks

I've had another thought. What happens if you downgrade the version of the plugin. This would rule out the Ubuntu 9.10 RC build.

It seems that the problem was not with the iplayer plugin. Also SVN repo browser showed the same issue. Today I have upgraded again XBMC and the problem is solved.

Thanks for putting that feature in, Dink. Works great too!

I seem to be having problems when the watched program finishes. XBMC stops responding to key presses or remote commands, the only way to get it working again is to alt-tab out and kill the process and restart xbmc. Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?
Here is the log file http://pastebin.com/m5b85cdfa
I have the same problem as lagertop. Tried all the quality settings and the h.264s and flash all crash.
Running the 24.10.09 version of the iplayer plugin and 9.11 Alpha 1.
Will try svn versions in a bit to see if that helps.
+1
same is happening to me. Ended up setting eventghost to kill XBMC and restart on a key press. Still love this plugin though

I grabbed the latest SVN Dx build from http://danielpatton.com/user-accounts/XBMC-updates/dx/ and it worked fine. Perhaps you could try that.

For reasons I won't go into, I really need to remove mention of "Watch Live" from this plugin.
I've had a play with the .py file where I found reference to it, but only managed to bugger it completely. I have now put it back the way it was but does anyone know how I can remove this feature?
I'm hoping I can just comment out a line and it will disappear?

Search default.py for "Watch Live", replace that line with the word "pass" at the same indentation.

You are legally allowed to watch tv only via online players if the shows` play times are staggered and not live.
You wish to not pay your u.k tv license, as ANY reference to live could at the whim of the officer land you with a fine of up to £1000. They normally just advise you to pay your license - don`t let them down your path, they have no power. Unless you allow them access.
Good Luck.

If I have understood correctly xbmc-iplayerv2 just streams with buffering. Is there any chance it could be enhanced to support downloading of programs as my Broadband speed is not good enough to support streaming. My understanding is that the iPhone stream is not DRM'ed so this should be possible no?

I haven't had a TV license for about 4 years. I have no physical means in my house to watch TV, but have XBMC xboxes in every room. Every year the TV inspector has gone over my house with a fine tooth comb to check that I cannot receive live TV.
Trouble is I see that the iPlayer plugin has a Watch Live option, which given that every year they have checked my house they have checked my xboxes, when they come again (which I have a letter saying I am due yet another visit) I just want to remove "Watch Live' completely.
I've never used it, I never will use it, but I don't want to stop using this excellent plugin.
Dink, will the fix you have suggested remove the menu item for it or just stop it working?

It will remove the menu item completely. The first reference to "Watch Live" is a line of code which adds the details for this menu item to a list. Replace the line (but not the spaces as python needs these) with the the word "pass" and no menu item can be generated.
else:
folders.append(('Watch Live', 'tv.png', make_url(listing='livefeeds', tvradio=tvradio)))
folders.append(('Popular', 'popular.png', make_url(listing='popular', tvradio=tvradio)))
becomes
else:
pass
folders.append(('Popular', 'popular.png', make_url(listing='popular', tvradio=tvradio)))

Do they really check your computer software?

Do they really check your computer software?
They have always asked me to turn on my xboxes with XBMC and my TVs. They check if any of the TV channels are tuned in to a station or if there is any way of picking up TV.
If you refuse to let them in, they get a court order, so there's no point refusing to let them in. They are also VERY flakey on the law. Last time they questioned us for ages about rips of TV dvd shows that were on my media server. They tried to imply that I must have recorded them from Live TV somehow and had therefore broken the rules.
Thanks for the replies. When I get home tonight I'll have a go at editing the file and see how I get on.

Are they really allowed to do that? Who gave them that power? Where the citizens ever asked? Why do I have to pay a licence that goes to the BBC if I never watch it?
Sounds really scary..like Gestapo of the XXI century in a "democratic" "free" country.
I have to say I pay the licence but dont really want to.
2 years ago I bought a computer monitor that happened to have a TV tuner at Argos.. at the cashier then they asked me to pay for the licence.. when I was using it for my computer.
Sorry for this rant. :-)

This worked perfectly, thank you.
I have added your latest Iplayer HD plugin and the audio is out of sync, it appears that my video is slightly slow but the audio is running at the correct speed, so eventually the video is way out of sync.
any ideas.?
Yes. I had the same problem with my Acer Revo 3600 1GB, Atom 230. This was with Ubuntu 9.04 and IPlayer plugin from the 2009-10-24.
First I though it was a performance issue since the player was dropping frames and the CPU was at 100%. So I upgraded to 2GB ram and set the video memory to 512MB in the BIOS. This did not make any difference whatsoever.
Funny thing was that playing h.264 1080p videos from file (with much higher bit-rates) worked fine. So I decided that the player must be the problem and upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 with xbmc 9.11~alpha1-karmic1. This solved all my problems. BBC iplayer has now smooth playback, the audio is in sync and CPU is at 15%.
I'm still getting lockups when finishing iPlayer videos. I've tried a couple of interim builds and have now installed alpha 2 and it's no better. Maybe it's a driver thing? (thought: might try the same test on my Mac). I've now set up an Eventghost Taskkill macro to nuke XBMC when it happens, but it'd be nice to know what's causing it. Thanks for your help thus far.

can you supply a debug log?
Yep, I'll grab one and upload it.
Just tried the same program on the Mac and it's fine - alpha 2, same iPlayer version. So it's something different between Windows and the Mac.
Hmm...wonder if it's worth trying the OpenGL windows build to see if it still craps out.
Will report back later.
I've just tested this again and generated a couple of log files.
For the first, I left XBMC hung for a little while before killing the task.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/250934/xbmc%20-%20pause.log
The second, I killed it almost immediately (I waited five seconds after the hang).
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/250934/xbmc%20-%20no%20pause.log
Looking at the logs, it seems like it goes into a loop at the end of the video. The pause log is much bigger than the immediate one, and the same block of log repeats over and over.
Let me know if there's anything else you'd like me to test.
Cheers.
