MiniMeedia Release - v0.75 (18/05/2009)

It's not quite as complete and as polished as I would have hoped but time at the moment is very tight so I thought I may as well get this out there in its current state.

The skin is pretty much feature complete but there are still a few things I know I want to add:


New slider dialog
Further default thumb images (parent folder, music etc)
Tidy up video OSD when playing a DVD
Video info dialog to work better when viewing a TV show season
Tidy up of labels displayed for some media types (music and episodes could be formatted slightly better in some views)

I fully expect that some of you will find problems in the skin but since I have done pretty much all the testing so far on my own then it's not really surprising.

If you do find any problems or have any suggestions on improvements to the skin please describe them as fully as possible and give screenshots where possible.

Background Images
The skin itself does not contain any real background images since most users will already have a set of background images that they like (for MediaStream and Aeon skins etc) and I assume most users will be using fanart for the Movies and TV Shows anyway.

I have a nice set of custom background images that I use and aim to provide download links so that users can use these if they want.

The skin is setup to work with Weather Fanart (the weather background should match the current weather conditions) and to get this working properly I recommend downloading timdog's Weather Fanart pack (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=41650)

One thing that may confuse users is that after downloading the skin, you start it up and then see that you don't see any nice background images. That's because the only real background image included in the skin is a white noise type image (like what you would see on an old analogue TV if it wasn't tuned in to a station).

So the first step after installing the skin should be for you to go to the custom Skin settings (click on System link on Home screen and select Skin) and from there you setup where you want the skin to pick up your custom images from. I would recommend setting up a folder for each of the main items on the Home screen and placing any relevant background images in those folders. Then update the skin to point to those folders.

(I use a relatively small set of custom background images and you can find links to download them in the first post).

I love it! Great that you've allowed for choosing a bigger font. And it's running great on the XBOX! No memory issues so far!
The skin isn't really overscan friendly though. On my PAL TV the first and last letters (on the outer edges) fall off the screen. One more suggestion is that selecting "System" and "weather" on the home screen does not show a background from the configured background folder until IN the "System" or "Weather' screen.

That's something I probably should have mentioned in the first post - the skin was designed primarily for 720p and will probably look pretty naff in 4x3. I'm not planning on doing any 4x3 support at the moment (I don't really have the time) but it may happen at some point in the future.

As for the xbox, I've been running this skin on my xbox at home since January (80 percent of the skin has been written for about 4 or 5 months now) and haven't really had any issues.

I've tried to space the skin away from the edges of the screen but I guess I haven't left enough for all screens. I think I left about 10 to 20 pixels at the edges of the screen.

The weather and system backgrounds show up for me as soon as I move to the items in the menu? Strange

It will be added to the XBMC Skinning Project SVN once it's been tested a bit more and any missing features are added.

It's only beta at the moment (hence the 0.75 version number) but once it gets to v1.00 it'll hit the SVN (in the same way that MediaStream did)

Between now and then I hope to do fairly regular updates and make these available for download as and when they're ready. I want the development of the skin to build for the next few weeks (mostly based on user feedback) so that the v1.00 release of the skin is very stable, usable and (hopefully) feature complete.

Awesome skin, I am loving it so far. Just played around with it on my test system.

Thanks, I have fixed the link to the power images (damn typos!).

As for the season images, the skin should just display the season thumb as provided by the skinning engine. It's the engine itself that should work out the name and scraping of that image. I don't actually have any season images on my file system but they are scraped and they seem to show up fine for me.

Anyone else have a problem seeing their season thumbs?

I'm using a 82cm 16:9 PAL TV. It all looks very nice, except for the text not always fitting on the screen. I understand I'm probably a minority in using a old SD television. So no harm done if this is something that you won't change. I'd completely understand. I thought you'd still like to know :)

Doh! Thanks for spotting that. I've fixed it for the next version and for those that want to have the fix now then you need to change lines 307 - 208 in 720p/Custom1001_SkinSettings.xml to be the following:

You can already disable videos but if you want to add File Manager as a root item them you'll need to mod it yourself for that. (For me it's a media centre skin so functionality like File Manager should be hidden further down)

There's a shutdown option already and what it does is based on how you've setup XBMC. It gets too confusing to add too many Shutdown PC/Hibernate/Shutdown XBMC options so I've to keep it plain and simple.

I haven't tested the networks stuff since the scraping of the networks for tv shows was added yesterday/day before. You'll need a very up to date build of XBMC and will probably have to re-scrape/refresh your tv show info to get it to work.

I coded it before XBMC was updated so I'll have to test it myself to make sure it works as I intended but I think the code should work. :oo:

just notice that with the update to a new build the transition from screen to screen runs slower .. i try different skins and all seem to look like that.

I actually updated the code on my machine at home to do the background loading but forgot to include that in the build I released yesterday! :oo:

Not sure what you mean by 'single background loading image' though? It'll be multiple background loading images but only one of which will be visible, depending on what context you are currently browsing.

See PM3.HD's new code for the homepage to see how it's done using a single multiimage control for all the backdrops. There's a bit on my blog about it as well. Far nicer, as it gives you all the background loading stuff in addition to nice crossfading between multiimages and single images.

Just had a look at the code for the home screen in PM3.HD and it's a nice solution and I think I'll look at changing the code in the MiniMeedia home screen to do something similar. (Will have to be changed slightly to incorporate Weather Fanart though)

I have one request though, could you make an extra high list view? It's the same "problem" I have with all the fancy HD skins, they look great, but they're quite hard to navigate through. Especially when you have a very large library.

Nope, it's the same answer as I gave when asked for a wall view - it goes against the essence of the skin design. The skin was designed to be minimal and allow the backgrounds to show more. Having a wall view or an extra high list view are in direct opposition to that.

To be honest I toyed about a bit before adding the High List view as I wasn't sure it wasn't minimal enough. Even now I'm still not 100% sure it totally fits the concept.

If you want a skin that has big expansive views then I'm afraid this isn't the one for you. However, if you want a more minimal skin which is easy to use and shows off the custom backgrounds and fanart then you're in the right place. :;):

Again, I haven't had a chance to look at your skin, so i don't know if your flags are the same format as the ones in my database, but I did notice that yours are white, which is good :)

Long file path seems to cause this behavior. Also noted that mpaa rating appears cut off sometimes.

ex. <mpaa>Rated R for violence and brief nudity (definitive cut); Rated R for violence. (1991 version)</mpaa>

There is a box that shows in which catogory you are (bleu text).

Great job - it looks even better running than I thought it would.

It looks awesome, runs smooth and requires no nfo programs to play nice. Top work.

One bug/issue - In showcase view (on a 1080p PC version) I notice the thumbs look a little "fat". They all seem to be stretched horizontally - only slightly. All other views are perfect.

I believe that issue is caused by the fact that there were no characters that would allow a break in the file name. If you used spaces in files names it would probably solve that issue.


BTW Skunkm0nkee, this is one of the nicest skins I've seen in a while that doesn't cause my Xbox to lag incredibly. Kudos to you.

I like this a lot. A nice alternative for my Xbox, since it's easier than dealing with Lite mods. :)

I think you could still clean up a few areas, in particular where there are weird bump-outs for bits of information that could easily be moved. Examples are the temperature on the homepage (make the entire top bar ~ 30% larger and make it a single line, reducing the weather image size a tad.

Same goes for the tv show and movie counts on those screens. I'd rather see the list size reduced by 1 so you could fit "5/66" (or whatever) at the bottom. Better yet, the banner could be moved up to match the top of the list which would give you room below the banner for the show count. The movie count could be moved to the top or bottom of the list itself to eliminate the need for the bump-out there.

Finally, I'd recommend having things line up whenever possible. For example, you could reduce the height of the movie list by ~30% and increase the size of the info panel to match that height. Overall you'd be using less real-estate but you could fit the movie poster into the info box if desired. I think overall it'd give it a cleaner and more consistent look.

Ok, so it works in some cases and not others. I guess it could be the textbox control then? I'm just displaying the path in the textbox and aligning it right so not doing anything depending on howbig the path is, that's all down to the control. Mind you I've never had seen any issues with it but that might just be cos my paths are all very similar.

If you enable Show Weather on Home then the weather will disappear from the top right!

Yep, Showcase view is one I'll be looking at in the next week or so as there's definitely room for improvement.

It used be like that when I first started the skin but I decided that the shaped area worked better. (Check the first post in the New Skin (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=44433) thread)

I personally like the bump-outs as you call them. They are optional after all so it makes sense not to have areas pre-defined for them. Doing them like this also makes them more adaptable for different views and consistent throughout the skin. (Plus I like the way they animate in and out)

Hehe, every point you've made actually refers to how things used to work before I changed them. Sounds like you would have liked an earlier version of the skin :grin:

If you're using the list view then open the options menu (push right twice) and enable Show Plot option (or see this screenshot (http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/8469/listtvinfo.png)). You'll see everything lines up as you describe. Problem is I like the plot hidden by default and don't want to just fill that area (especially as the skin is supposed to be minimal) so I reduced the area on the right.

It's all a matter of opinion really but I like the skin better now than I did when it was more like how you are proposing. Sorry :sniffle:

What happens if you go to the Weather screen itself, do you get anything displayed there? My guess is that you're not connecting to the site to get the weather info so there's nothing to display. (It won't show the area unless it has weather info to display)

Yep, this is what I said above:

It will be added to the XBMC Skinning Project SVN once it's been tested a bit more and any missing features are added.

It's only beta at the moment (hence the 0.75 version number) but once it gets to v1.00 it'll hit the SVN (in the same way that MediaStream did)

Between now and then I hope to do fairly regular updates and make these available for download as and when they're ready. I want the development of the skin to build for the next few weeks (mostly based on user feedback) so that the v1.00 release of the skin is very stable, usable and (hopefully) feature complete.

It's the context menu that is used to display those options and unfortunately I don't think there's anyway for the skin to position it based on what options it is showing.

The context menu just gets styled by the skin, what actually appears in it is down to XBMC itself. I can position it but I can't position it based on what's in it since the skin doesn't know what the context menu is being used for. (There may be some clever way of working it out but I can't think of one)

At the moment the Hide Fanart option is a global skin setting, meaning that fanart is either on or off throughout the skin.

It's quite a significant change to make different Fanart options for all the different media and it's not something I'm planning to do at the moment.

I'm not too sure it would actually add anything to do that and for consistency it's better to leave it in. (In general, if there is any text on screen then there is some sort of black background behind it to try and make sure it's readable)

I haven't really followed it but I was under the impression that you as a user have to download the genre packs and then manually attach them to the genres in XBMC?

You have to download them and put it into the textures.xpr file of the skin.

The "show plot" option isn't supposed to be there at all. skunkm0nkee removed the option (in next release) because it was visible and it shouldn't be.

Just played about with it for different types of media and the 'Show Plot' option does actually have an effect on the High List view but only when viewing episodes.

For the next release I have fixed it so the Show Plot option will appear when using the High List view but only if the current media is episodes.

It's because this skin is made for XBMC. PLEX doens't have the studio codes that XBMC have.

It's not a glitch in the skin. There's conditional logic that doesn't seem to work on plex so it doesn't hide lots of images and displays them one on top of the other instead.
