View Full Version : XBMC Live on Dell Latitude D600?
I've got a Dell Latitude D600 which I'm trying to get to work with a HDD-install of XBMCLive (Atlantis). I've been unable to get X to work despite trying different xorg.conf-configurations.
How should I change the setup of X? Are there any configuration script to assist me in this? Is it enough just to change xorg.conf? Is there a way of running it through VESA?
(I know XBMC can run on D600 as option 3 (Intel-drivers) on the XBMCLive startup menu runs it. My problems has probably something to due with how the ATI-drivers is to be set up.)
Running in safe-mode from the CD also works. How do I get that config installed on the HDD?

The D600 has a somewhat wonky ATI chipset (Radeon Mobility 9000) for which the proprietary ATI drivers will not work. I have one as well and only the open source ATI radeon drivers will work with Linux. I've tried the XBMC live install and all I can get to work with it is the Intel choice. By doing this, it's very....very slow graphically.
From what I've read online, ATI considers this chipset a legacy product and it's not supported under the new binary only drivers. You could try installing the "radeon" open-source DRI driver and putting that in your xorg.conf, but I'm not sure if it'll work or not, mainly because I haven't tried it.

I've tried it (on Atlantis) but haven't had any luck. I've now installed Babylon but haven't really tried the OpenSource Driver. It should be possible though, as I've seen several posts about getting Compiz to work with the open source drivers under Ubuntu on the exact same graphics card.

Compiz works just fine with the open source driver. I have 9.04 installed on my D600 with the visual effects on. Full blown Compiz effects do work, but they slow the machine down. Getting the open source driver is not the problem, integrating it into, and getting it to work with XMBC is.

Is this something I should be able to do myself (by downloading/apt get'ing and editing config-files) or is this something the XBMC-team have to do?
In other words: how difficult is this?

I don't know how difficult it would be. I haven't tried it. Since Babylon is more of a full-blown Ubuntu installation, you should be able to sudo apt-get install radeon, but I can't verify that it will go that smoothly. If you can get the driver to install, you can put your own xorg.conf file in the root of the drive and try to get XBMC to use that instead.
It might take some legwork, but I don't think it's impossible.
I've given up on using XBMCLive. I've just installed Xubuntu and have xbmc up and running. It took less than an hour.
Now I just have to get TV-out to work...

How's the speed on the D600 running XBMC under a full-blown Linux install? It's gotta be faster than Live, but I'm wondering whether it'll handle 720p content or not.

I dont think it'll handle HD at all tbh..

I don't know. I'm only using it for playing DVD's on the HDD which it handles quite well.
(Still having problems with TV-OUT, though. I'm suspecting the s-video to scart cable to be the culprit. I'm getting picture on the tv but it is crappy. I would expect the picture to be as perfect as my soon-to-be-replaced-by-xbmc dvd-player..)
