View Full Version : TV Show Thumbs for Multiplex (Wide Poster "FanArt with Logos")
As we're all just getting started with making these it might be nice to use this thread to let others known when you've added one for a show so we don't have to keep checking every show on thetvdb for updates. We're all jumping to get our libraries updated for this new view so having one thread to share updates should move things along quicker.
The idea is to upload new thumbs to thetvdb.com as fanart, at normal fanart resolution. TheTVDB is going to implement the ability to flag these "fanarts with logos" sometime so we can integrate into XBMC.
How To Use:
Grab the image you want and save it as folder.jpg in the show's folder. Then, when you go into the TV show's info in XBMC and hit "thumb" to pick the thumbnail, the image will show up as local thumb at the bottom of the list.
FernFerret's talks with thetvdb.com crew will open the way for XBMC to link in and display specific fanarts as remote thumbs, like it does banners and posters right now. It will require an update to thetvdb.com (which they're willing to do it seems), and an update to XBMC's code (which shouldn't be much), so for now the best way is to just add them as folder.jpg.
Guidelines for making thumbs:
16:9 ratio (same as normal fanart), 720p or larger. Text/logo should be easy to read when in Multiplex view (remember scales down to ~300x200ish). Upload to http://thetvdb.com and share!
Note keep the image under 500k, thetvdb will lie to you and not actually save your image if you don't.
When uploading to thetvdb make sure you pick Series Name: Included from the dropdown.

What are you guys doing about season thumbs? My family guy collection had an awesome collection of standard thumbs, but I was thinking, since AEON auto lables the thumbs season X, maybe just taking the series thumb with a color hue?
Also, I haven't looked yet, mainly because i'm lazy, but is there an easy scraper mod to add fanart to the thumb scraper list?

Just a question, though, these are the show thumbs now? I mean to say, are they now instead of posters/banners? This will be the new standard?
If so, should i make them at 1280x720, or 1920x1080?

What are you guys doing about season thumbs?
They should be easier because there's normally quite a few fanarts that are season specific. Just look at the ones for 24 for instance and you'll the characters from certain seasons in them.

I just updated to the latest release on git. The poster I use at the moment are basically just cut off at the top and bottom. So maybe the effort should be to create poster images which have the important information in the center instead of creating fanart with the name of the series in it. Fanart isn't displayed in the lower band anyway but posters are and they can be changed from within XBMC.
Thanks for all the ones you have made guys, but on my screen they are slightly cut off at the left and right sides, noticable on the house one as it is cutting off the box around the H. Just cos i am using a 22" 16:10 screen rather than a 16:9 tv?

That issue is known. All the images are cut off on a 16:10 monitor (which most new computer screens use) but it doesn't seem like it's easy to fix.

If you use 16:10 images for the banners it displays fine, but I can imagine having to figure out a way to 80 or 120 pixels to a load of 16:9 images is gonna be a real pain.

isn't there one word somewhere in the code that you can change to make the image stretch rather than crop? i remember someone talking about doing it with showcase. i'd be fine with a little bit of stretching. it's hardly noticeable but it's quite clear when part of your text is missing.

Oh, Scott there is one other thing we missed. We not only have to tag them as including the title but now fanarts also have to have languages attached to them.
It's some pretty minor changes to the interface but you may want to hold off on adding a bunch of these until it's changed otherwise you're just going to have to go back through and mark them once it is changed.

I was asked how this is currently working for the end-user: naming conventions, etc. The way I've been doing it is grabbing those fanarts that have been uploaded with the title in them and saving them as folder.jpg in the show's folder. Then, when you go into the TV show's info in XBMC and hit "thumb" to pick the thumbnail the image will show up as local thumb at the bottom of the list.
FernFerret's talks with thetvdb.com crew will open the way for XBMC to link in and display specific fanarts as remote thumbs, like it does banners and posters right now. It will require an update to thetvdb.com (which they're willing to do it seems), and an update to XBMC's code (which shouldn't be much), so for now the best way is to just add them as folder.jpg.

Yeah no problem. Sheldon is actually behind the logo. I couldn't see where to put him to keep it symmetrical so he had to be omitted.

One suggestion @hikaricore -- make sure the text is nice and big (or medium size but high contrast). Remember how these are going to be viewed: as approximately 300x200 thumbs on TVs. Really tiny text won't show up at all.

Honestly either way it's still right click copy link etc etc for me. Easy enough to track if I just update the first post once per new page. Plus thread rules tend to get forgotten after a page or two.

Part of it was I wasn't sure what kind of design you were going to make for the info screen. You like hi-res art (and that's why we like your skin) so wanted to make sure we wouldn't be screwed redoing everything if the new TV info page wanted nice big thumbs.
Also since we're using the tvdb's fanart section to store them we probably can't get away with anything smaller than ~720p since it still needs to make suitable fanart.

Where exactly do you set the size of the cache? because I'm currently getting some serious lag in the top level of tv shows although I think its something to do with the fanart/info pane.

Any recommendations on a better way to go about this? Not having to do fanart-worthy sized images would make things a bit easier I'm sure.
TheTVDB seemed like the logical distribution so you wouldn't have to keep updating a thumb archive on aeon's site, but for a show the only thing that's 16x9 is fanart.
So far I haven't hit any lag issues (default settings), with about 24 or so of these new thumbs loaded.

As we're all just getting started with making these it might be nice to use this thread to let others known when you've added one for a show so we don't have to keep checking every show on thetvdb for updates. We're all jumping to get our libraries updated for this new view so having one thread to share updates should move things along quicker.
The idea is to upload new thumbs to thetvdb.com as fanart, at normal fanart resolution. TheTVDB is going to implement the ability to flag these "fanarts with logos" sometime so we can integrate into XBMC.
How To Use:

Also, Has anyone been able to get the season thumbs to work in aeon without using MIP or other such program? Whenever I set a season thumb, it sets the series thumb. Is this a problem with AEON or XBMC?
EDIT: They say something should be in place within the week!
I'm kinda just waiting till I sort out exactly how we do it. It should be in place sometime within the week though.
We can always do both options as well. Have the option to do an overlay but still allow text images. Although if I do that I think we'd have to be more picky about the text images. Like only allow them if they actually are different from what the overlay would produce.
I'll most likely just add the tag for text images and call it a day for now. Sort out the overlay issue with the new site, it kinda stinks though since that means lots of work would get deleted once the overlay is in place if we do decide to go that way.

I've posted this on the TVdb forum as well -
I personally think they should be completely separate from Fanart (called something like Wide Poster as they're not meant as backdrops) and even see if we can get them an extra label for XBMC to scan to the library.
This will allow people to use different views in skins without having to entirely re-do their complete posters collection each time.

Yep, exactly what I was thinking. That way we could create proper TV show thumbs which are easy to read, rather than ones where the text is too small, which I'm thinking maybe some of these may be? It would mean having another image file in the same folder as the TV show, but at least it could be a small image, and not 720p or 1080p?!

I had this same issue. Its a file size thing. Take the quality down a notch or 2 when you save as jpg in photoshop (assuming you're using photoshop).
I think that the size limit is 500kb so get it below this and it should be fine.
And good work on the one for 24. Much better than my failed attempt :)

This would be fine if thetvdb added a new section for these images but without that they only way we can get them easily distributed is to upload them in the fanart section which requires 720p as a minimum.
I think in the end we all agree they should be smaller and separate from fanart, making these at 720p is overkill for the current use. Ideally a new "banner" size on thetvdb would work great.
But right now if we go that route (ie not fanart-sized) we have no way of hosting them beyond a bunch of links in this thread to a mix of upload services.
If we want to move away from fanart sized we should at least make sure they all end up in the same place, so when thetvdb adds support for this type we can easily move them all over.
Maybe a flickr group, or I could thrown down a small image sharing library on my web server? What do you guys think?

I wouldn't want small crappy images then. :p Besides the intitial download xbmc should be resizing these for its own cache so it shouldn't be an issue.

My vote is still as fanart on thetvdb as they are working on supporting it right now. And with scraper support in addition it would be perfect. Let us all stick to the way we started to make it consistent.
At least until someone on tvdb or xbmc end comes up with a real solution.

Right now I still have scans of the dvd cases. >.>
What I may to is grab group shots from each season and use them.

Inside it you write:

EDIT: Oh and don't forget to remove your Thumbnails directory from the Userdata folder. If you don't it will not create new thumbs with your desired size.

Luckily, I found where some guy had uploaded a 6750x4400 scan of the dvd artwork. O.o

You could throw some image gallery software onto the server and we could go from there or you could just use directories. I soppose there is no point setting up a new image gallery site until we know what thetvdb.org are doing with there gallery as aren't they developing something for Aeon TV Show posters?

I'd avoid hosting the images anywhere but thetvdb, nice to have them centralized on a site we all already use. Plus eventually they'll all end up there anyway as they're figuring out how they want to support these images (fanart with flags or entirely new image section) We just need a place to have the list that doesn't have a character limit ;)

I think i may have posted this way back around page 4 or something, but I couldent get season art to add. Whenever I go into a series, press "i" on season X, set the thumb, it sets the series thumb, not season X... any ideas?

You can either reload the entire show which if all your images are named right should sort it out or to do it manually select the season you want to change the thumb for, bring up the context menu "c" and then "set season thumb" :)

There is a lot of poor image and logo qualities being uploaded. Some got really bad composition. It might look fine when scaled down, but I really think we should hold off until there is a standard set.
Also, if you don't have a good enough image or logo, ask others before uploading what you got. Having a request thread might be an option.

I think that you should provide some examples of what you don't like since you've contributed nothing to this thread yourself.
No one is forcing you to use any of these images and if you have no use for them I suggest just ignoring them and making your own.

Well sorry but I am very greatfull for any images people are uploading at the moment. Due to work I have no time what so ever to start making images. I would rather see anything than nothing.

I have no problem with people making these, I just get a litttle worried when they all get uploaded to the scraper sites without any form of defined standard or quality. Are they thinking about overlaying separate title logo on thetvdb?
I just ask that people have a little critical look at what they want to upload before they do so (blurry images, jagged logos etc), or it becomes twice the work later.
I'm not starting uploading before I have a set standard, but I will.

Most of them look fine except 7th heaven (which i mentioned was a problem) and OC (just text).
Perhaps find me a better highres image of the 7th heaven cast and I'll remake mine?

They're fair, I just picked them for varoius nitpicks. Problem with some of them is that the logo/text becomes unreadable when they're scaled down. There is difficult to get an consistency in the library regard to the logo. I think thetvdb is thinking about allowing uploading of logos only to create a overlay with existing backdrops that might be interesting, They probably update their wiki with new requirements regards size, positioning and logos, if these thumbs get implemented.
Sadly I think I have a better image, I'll check when I get back from work.:o

This would also resolve the issues with the info view and save a lot of file moving around. >.<

i only started to teach myself photoshop the day after the 16:9 multiplex view was released but i'm having quite a lot of fun learning. i can't really speak for everyone but i like sharing what i make. i've taken plenty from the forum in the past without ever giving anything back so it's nice to finally be able to contribute. i'm already starting to see an improvement in my latest thumbs over the initial ones i started with and i'm sure the same could be said for everyone else who's in the same position as me although i can still see i have a LONG way to go. is there a place where people like me can upload their thumbs until we're creating them at an acceptable level for everyone although still allowing those who want to use them to download now?

The great thing about thetvdb is that you can delete your own uploads, so If one finds a better one you can fix it yourself. Not so easy on themoviedb.:nerd:
I personally don't feel I have high requirements, but I would like people to consider quality of the image, crispness of the logo and readability of the scaled thumb, when they create these or any form of fanart.
I'm guessing a standard imagehost like imageshack would do if you want to show your work.

Agreed. At the end of the day nobody is being forced to use these. Anything that anybody contributes is good enough for me :D
Also, the images being displayed are only showed at a small resoution and finding high quality 1080p fanart for obscure TV shows is not that easy. I think as long as the font is readable and if possible, is the same font the show uses for DVD's etc then there great. After all, noone is being forced to use them.

sorry. i didn't mean to steal your thunder or anything, lol. please don't delete it. i'm of the opinion that people should have a choice. i was annoyed at the poeple slagging other peoples work off at first but i'm pretty sure it's a minority. the majority of people here seem genuinely pleased that people are taking the time out to share their work. anything you produce and share is going to be of value to someone. and as i've found, the more you practice the better you get. some people here are producing phenomenal stuff and that's the standard i'm trying to work towards. i couldn't do logos at first but it only took me a few hours to pick it up. once you've got it it's fairly easy once you find a reasonably good quality source. keep up the good work mate...

I think the general consensus is just to use fanart. There is currently a request for a change in multiplax so the fanart you see when browsing at episode level is in fact the season thumb.

1080 and 720 is most likely huge overkills. Until a standard is set, like it is for backdrops, posters, banners and actors, we should exercise some caution before filling up thetvdb. Most of the images uploaded looks fine for its intended use.

If you read the first post and some of the other earlier posts you will see that there is a very good reason for having these images at 720p or above.
Don't get me wrong your contribution is very much appreciated it will just make it easier if we all stick to the basic guidelines.

As he isn't trying to upload to any scraper so I don't see the harm. They are quite nice and except the size he's sticking to the guidelines.

Just out of interest, why such big thumbnails? Mine are 541x305 and even that seems a bit excessive for such a small browser. Or are you future-proofing in case someone makes a view with larger requirements?

I completely agree with you that 720p is unnecessarily large I was original making mine at 374x210 before this thread was started.
The only point I was trying to make is that until thetvdb decide what they're going to do we need to stick to one method and since theres already what looks like over 100 posted as fanart we might aswell keep this method for the time being.
On the other hand, perhaps instead of posting the hosted images on here how about posting the link to the hosted images? That way it can still be added to the list and gives everyone the option of either uploading to tvdb or hosting.

Absolutely. IMO thats the best solution. :nod:

If you don't want to use large images, they are easily scaled down using any image editor and can even be done in batches.

I agree with what you say 100% it's much better to have them far too big, and as you say it's easy to batch resize them, maybe they just have no idea how to do it. or can't be bothered to learn......:eek:

I will be continuing with the 720p for future compatibility but I don't see any problem with others making them smaller and uploading to image hosts if they really want to. At the end of the day those of us that prefer the high res ones don't have to use them.
And don't forget they get scaled down and cached by XBMC anyway.

Didn't feel like I was telling people their work was unnecessary, or that there was anything wrong with 720p versions.
I was just trying to advocate that we hold off uploading to the fanart section at thetvdb (where the wiki states should be textless) and keep it local to this thread, until we know how they want to handle it.
Felt I was rather civil and it was more a discussion then an argument.???
Since I’m totally alone in this view and there hasn't been any outcry from thetvdb I will not bring this up again.

This matter was discussed with the tvdb staff on their forums and they agreed that text would be okay as long as its done tastefully. They're also going to add some sort of flagging system to show whether fanart contains text or not.
That is why we decided on thetvdb as the best distribution method.
