Hi there, first time poster so please be gentle :o

Just delving into all this htpc lark, and I'm stuck on which remote I should go for. The sensible side of me just says go with a standard MCE remote, but I'd really prefer something that isn't IR.

Remotes like the dinovo mini look damn nice, but again, i'm not sure how much use I'd get out of the keyboard, particularly as XBMC is geared much more towards the standard one-handed thumb-pressing control method.

So, what does everyone else use? ???

I use the MCE remote. Eventually, I plan on pairing the MCE remote receiver with a Logitech Harmony remote, but for now just the plain vanilla MCE remote.

Speedlink MCE clone + Eventghost. Works brilliantly once set up and dirt cheap.

MCE Remote + Receiver + Event Ghost. Works like magic, but took some setting up.

I've got a Harmony One, which I've tried using but its lags like crazy. Am going to wait until my USB-UIRT arrives.

Hi all, first post... Have been using XBMC for years on the XBox. Have recently added an Apple TV and Windows XBMC to my gear...

Sorry about the noob questions but:

1. How does one get an mce remote working with XBMC on Windows?

2. How does one get an XBOX remote to work with Windows?

Thanks!

Thanks for everyone's replies. Think I might go with a bog standard MCE remote, seems less hassle :)

I use an original Xbox controller on my HTPC; it's what I'm used to after using it on the Xbox for so many years. Some day I'll buy an Xbox 360 controller so it's wireless, but the original Xbox controller works just fine.

I'm using this one http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14380 (using only receiver)
+ Eventghost
+ special driver for this remote (With this driver remote control doesn't emulate keyboard and mouse, but only sends events to eventghost)

As remote control I'm using Logitech Harmony 525

xbox 1 remote controller (like it, simple and effective) plus the mapping for it has been perfected through the years. Also too used with it :)

A friend gave me a DViCO Fusion remote yesterday, and I spent the better part of the evening and this morning getting it working with my Zotac 330 board, and also with my Harmony 880. I now have it working as well as the Harmony worked with my original X-Box. It was not a completely trivial task. If anyone else has trouble getting one of these to work then feel free to ask for help.

My future setup is going to be:

Hardware:
ASRock ION 330-BD

Software:
Ubuntu + XBMC

Is there any remote that will work right out of the box with this setup?

Believe me I've just installed XBMC 9.04.1 and plugged in the IR adapter. Everything worked straight out of the box.

Without installing or re-installing lirc.

Of course I need to configure lirc to use all the 'special' buttons. But for now its ok.

I need an IR receiver for my Sony Bravia remote (RM-ED006), which is the model of the Sony IR receiver?

Someone knows an other IR receiver that will work with the Sony original remote?

I use GNU/Linux. Thanks for all.

I don't believe it's sold separately anywhere, but you may be able to find it on ebay or something. The item number's PCVA-IR7U.

And btw, it actually seems to pass almost any ir input through to eventghost. It works with my vizio remote, my old panasonic tv remote, really anything i've thrown at it.

What hardware driver / lirc kernel modules are you using for this? I have the same one but I don't see it listed in the big table of supported hardware for lirc.

Hi Natew, can you send me the driver of PCVA-IR7U? I lost the driver, and when plugged in, the system just recognizes it as HID Compatible Device.

yes you need an usb IR for most remotes.
Like many others you can also use the original Xbox remote (DVD playback kit) and connect the IR dongle to Asrock usb with an adapter. Someone wrote up a great how to on this.

If you have an iphone/itouch on wifi it's almost as good without spending more. Just run remotepad app on both devices.
