View Full Version : XBMC won't start
Hey Guys,
i tried Version 8.10 on my media pc, but it won't start. For a (really) short time there's an xbmc entry on the windows task bar, but then it dissapears and nothing happens. Also the log-file doesn't show anything noticeable.
Then i tried Version 8.10 on my laptop, it just works fine!
So i renewed the system on my mediapc, but there still happens the same -> nothing
The mediapc consist of the following components:
- Windows XP Pro SP3 with .NET 3.5 SP1
- Pentium 4 2,8 Ghz
- 1 GB RAM
- Radeon 9800
Would be great if someone could help me, xbmc looks very great and should replace the software "media portal".
Thanks
/P4G0
P.S.: Hope that my english is correct, i'm german ;)
Please try latest build ( 9.04 Beta 1 ) and post full debug log ..

And, while you are at it, install the most recent video driver from the ATI website.
I already tried 9.04 Beta, but there's the same problem. How can i create a full debug log?
ATI Drivers are the newest...

That thread is the sticky "how to post a problem in a useful manner." People should read that more often.
Wasn't it detailed enough? When i go through the list, i only forgot to post my soundcard + driver, huh?
Debug Log: http://rafb.net/p/Y36Jf752.html
There's one error in it, do you know that error?
19:09:56 T:604 M:480182272 ERROR: CSettings::Load Error loading C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Patrick\Anwendungsdaten\XBMC\userdat a\sources.xml: Line 0, Failed to open file
EDIT: Can't enable the debugging mode, cause xbmc won't start. Is there another option to enable it?
Please try the latest beta:
http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=87054&filename=XBMC_for_Windows-Babylon-Beta1.exe
The log indicates that you're still using an old version.
Still the same problem with Babylon Beta1...
Here's the "standard"-log: http://rafb.net/p/Dm3k1Y14.html
Is it possible, that xbmc has a problem with my graphics-card? The pc is only connected to my tv via composite-out.

Um. Try uninstalling the recent build, delete the XBMC folder found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\
Then install the recent build again.
Ordinarily, if there was a graphics card problem, we should have seen a line listing the OpenGL version and then attempting to load OpenGL extensions. If that is your whole log, it hasn't reached the video card point.

On a side note, Beta 1 is listed as having been complied April 4, 2009 and is SVN: 19218
Is that right? I haven't installed it yet, but that seems old.
Already done... Notice, that it's not a full debug log! Is there another possibility to enable debugging mode?

What do you mean it's not a full debug log? XBMC by default logs all starts. If you are copying the full log from
C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\XBMC\xbmc.log
then that's all the log file XBMC should be producing. Here is what the file should at least look like:
http://pastebin.com/m193a9b03
Are you copying the full log?
At the Babylon Beta1 there are only the two folders plugins and scripts under the path, no xmbc.log
C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\XBMC\
The second log i posted was from c:\Programme\XBMC\xbmc.log

Uh. When you install, do you select default or portable?
Have tested both. Current: "default"

Alright, let's start again. Uninstall everything. Delete the XBMC folder from here:
C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\XBMC\
Ok. Once that's done:
1. Install XBMC Babylon beta 1.
2. Select default installation.
3. Right click the link you are using to run XBMC and make sure the '-p' switch is not there. If it is there, delete it.
4. Run XBMC.
5. Go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\XBMC\
6. Paste that log file.

In fact, you may not need to do any of that. You may be able to just right click the link and delete the '-p' switch.
To be on the safe site, i've done all steps.
Here's the new log: http://rafb.net/p/n2qBRh55.html

Alright, I'm not sure how to fix the problem here. At least one issue seems to be:
21:00:09 T:676 M:381067264 NOTICE: special://profile/ is mapped to: special://masterprofile/
Which seems wrong. At least my profile says the following:
01:24:49 T:2384 M:1301471232 NOTICE: special://profile/ is mapped to: C:\Users\Nathan\AppData\Roaming\XBMC\userdata
Any devs have any ideas?
21:00:09 T:676 M:381067264 NOTICE: special://profile/ is mapped to: special://masterprofile/
That's fine and no issue. Still no debug log afaik. You might want to create an advancedsettings.xml (search the forum or wiki) to create a debug log when the interface isn't available.

Do you not think:
http://rafb.net/p/n2qBRh55.html
works as a debug log? I got the impression that XBMC reached that point, then simply shut down. Unless, of course, P4G0 isn't copying and pasting the entire thing.
I have some more infos already in the beginning therefore I assume this isn't a debug log:

Aaah advancedsettings.xml worked fine, some more log-entries:

This is created by loglevel 3.
P.S.: That's the complete log file, not only a part of it.
weird that it won't show any supported resolutions. I really have no idea why it won't start. Did you already tried to upgrade your graphics driver?
Yes it's the newest stable ATI Driver available: Catalyst 9.3
May it be, that XMBC has a problem with my graphics card or only with the output (Composite Out) of my graphics card?
Tomorrow i would try to test the system with an normal VGA-Monitor, maybe there's the problem.
Is there any debugging-tool which can show me whats happening exactly at startup? For example a step-for-step debug? (I know this from java-programming)

I tried the Beta. Mine also doesn't show supported resolutions. On the other hand, mine has no problem starting. I mean, from where it stops, you'd think it was a video driver error. Is there any change the ATI Radeon 9800 doesn't have the ability to support OpenGL 2.0, or even 1.4?
After reviewing a couple webpages, the Radeon 9800 claims to have support for OpenGL 1.5 as of the time of release as well as 2.0.
I don't get it.

Ah!!!!! Yes. That could be a pretty massive issue. Attempting to feed a 720p image through composite out confuses the best of video cards.
People always leave out tiny details.
Out of curiosity, how are you currently able to see what your media pc is doing? I had the hardest time reading anything when my computer was feeding to a TV via composite.
I compared the log to the log file of the working installation on my laptop. After the point where the log of the mediapc ends the initialization of OpenGL starts. See:
22:28:03 T:1908 M:1397784576 DEBUG: Constructing surface 1024x768, shared=00000000, fullscreen=1

Somewhere in the inernet i read, that some graphics card won't support OpenGL over TVOUT. Could that be the problem?

Yes and we got this already reported by from some users. This was the missing information we needed :;):
Try on your monitor and I bet it'll work.

When i have to read something on the mediapc, i use VNC ;) Hmm tomorrow i'm going to test xbmc with an vga-monitor, i have no VGA-display anymore, since i bought me a laptop.
But then it must be a problem with OpenGL, cause MediaPortal (based on DirectX) works fine on that computer.
P.S.: That i use the tv, i wrote many posts before ;)

look at post #8 ;)
is there any solution for this problem? when not, mediaportal has to continue the job for some time... do you know an agp graphics-card which works fine with XBMC and composite-out?
Try switch to 32-bit color depth
Try switch to 32-bit color depth
It's already on 32Bit... when it isn't on 32Bit, xbmc opens an error window and closes. I'm going to test the computer with a normal vga-monitor the next days...
sry, that i answer so late. I've tested xbmc with a normal vga-monitor. it doesn't work too. Maybe i try the linux-version in the next time.
