View Full Version : RMVB opens too slow
it's very nice that 9.04 Babylon Alpha 1 can support RMVB playback now, but open too slow, even a small size movie.
it must take about 1~2 minutes to begin playing after press Play button.
Could this be fixed in Final Build of Babylon? If then, it sould be the time to upgrade my XBOX to a Mac Mini in my living room :D:D

And assuming I don't know what "RMVB playback" is, details please and an example would be nice.
*.rmvb files can be full supported now, including video and audio.
The problem is that it must take about 1~2 minutes to begin playing after press Play button. After opened, it play perfectly.

Well, since you have given no info nor examples of where to find a "*.rmvb", I'm not about to waste my time hunting one down so I can replicate the problem and look into possible fixes.
No examples, no soup, and I'm moving on to other items.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RealMedia Variable Bitrate (RMVB) is a variable bitrate extension of the RealMedia multimedia container format developed by RealNetworks.
Is this clearly enough?
You still did not provide a sample.
It's like pulling teeth...
You still did not provide a sample.
It's like pulling teeth...
Do you mean a sample RMVB movie file? It's too big to upload here.
Please try any of RMVB file you can find.
And Mplayer for OSX can play rmvb immediately after click Play button.
How about you provide a link to some rmvb then. Davilla isn't going to spend time trying to find one so you need to find one for him.
if it isn't blatantly clear;
noone will hunt down a rmvb file to fix your issue. you have to atleast do that bit for us. there are tons of filehosting sites out there you can use to get a file which is CONFIRMED broken (see, just that bit is important) to a dev.

i can only provide a ed2k link, hope it useful
No it is not.
How about you download it and send it to some file sharing site.
If you want something looked at and fixed, you need to make it easy to get the information/files.

whenever someone claim 'all' xxxx files exhibit a problem, the only answer to give them is
'did you try all files out there?'

There are people on the forum who are willing to help. But no-one can guess what a problem might be. It could be your files, it could be versions of software (NEVER just say "latest"), it could be network, etc, etc. There are too many possibilities and no useful information provided generally means no useful help can be offered.
I tried Live, Mac and WINDOWS version
ALL RMVB FILE, when click it, just wait ,some file need to wait 10second,
some need to more. most file are over 1MIN!!!
if other format like avi is better respond , no need to wait to much
I try Windows Vista and Windows 7 , Install All other player like VLC, Real Player
Double click same RMVB file located in my NAS machine,
no problem, very fast respond
But when I use XBMC to play it. slow, wait, hang....
I think it should be the XBMC core module, player codec problem!!!
This player GUI so nice, Function so cool, but poor RMVB supported.
= no used...

YES, I have the same problem.
Select a rmvb file on local hard disk, click play, then wait for 10 seconds or more, thanks, finally I can see the video.
Windows XP SP2, freshly installed, nothing else except XBMC
The file version of "XBMC.exe" is 9.4.1.0
I have a friend who has some asian tv shows in the format. He is seeing this problem. Basically, on the xbox using mplayer it plays locally or streams over the network fine and framerate is at about 30fps. Playing with DVDPlayer it is about half that.
But using xbmc live if you play it locally it plays back at about 15fps.
If you try to play it from a network location, it sits there and doesn't seem to want to play but if you let it sit for about 5-10 minutes it will eventually start playing.
He sent the file to me and I can duplicate the behavior. I'm running XBMC live SVN 22528
I can send a megaupload link to someone that would like to take a look at this. It is an asian tv show and not sure about copyright for it so I don't want to just put the link here. You can PM me for it.

I was having the same problems with rmvb files. After a week of trying without any success, I moved back to mythtv. : - (
what is the status on this how can we play rmvb over network i have similar issue
here is a link of a sample of the videos that i have found over the net. Same issue with the choppy frames and the long load time. I just want to be able to plug in a USB or play the file smoothly over the atv hard disk itself.

I have created a "workaround" patch on avformat library, tested it work on my ATV.
Please feel free to try the patch :
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?bjmydmyj1zm
Unzip the avformat-52-osx.so, and copy to where it locate on your XBMC, make sure you backup your old library.
Is there any "wordaround" patch for the windows version or mac version instead of ATV? I too have the same problem that it will take the average 2 mins to wait open the RMVB files. However, other than RMVB files, all other media files open normally in a second.
Since the HD format media is available, my XBMC xbox is no longer useful because it will play movies very lagging. Now the XBMC is on the windows and mac, I have no problem to use either windows or mac as long as it can play RMVB without any problem. Finally the XBMC can play RMVB on May 2009 but it is useless due to the slowness problem when open RMVB file. I really want to get back to XBMC instead of HTPC.
To those respectful programmer, if you guys can work the RMVB problem out, I would like to help. Please email me so I can pass you some RMVB files if you need. Thank you for your hard work.
From the beginning of XBMC moving to windows or mac other than xbox, I read the discussion said the DVD Player don't support RMVB and unless the codec support it. No one is going to get the RMVB working on the XBMC that is the day I lose the hope. Then after couple months wait, I tried the new built of XBMC and RMVB is working but it has problem of loading - take couple mins to start the movies instead of seconds. Too slow. Unless someone is taking this to debug, we as unprogrammer, can't do anything but wait. Hope someone is looking this and will help us who use RMVB media format.
Thank you for looking! Although it's my 1st post in the xbmc forum, I constantly come to this forum to see if there is any hope on the RMVB program. Now I have to say something to HOPE people can help this problem to be solved. Thank you.

I believe the same library for ATV can be use in MACOS X also.
This patch will not be available in the SVN since I am not the XBMC developers and I am not familiar with the development process here. And this particular patch is for RMVB or RM video only.
Hopefully some the XBMC team will take a look on this and put it into the next release.

Would you mind sharing the code changes you've made to create this patch. I'm sure the developers would love to see it. Plus there's been a trac ticket or two opened for this issue. If you don't mind sharing the code I'd be more than happy to post the code to one of these tickets.
Thanks,

Here is the code changed that I made in : xbmc/xbmc/cores/dvdplayer/Codecs/ffmpeg/libavformat/utils.c
function : static void av_estimate_timings(AVFormatContext *ic, int64_t old_offset)
line code from :
} else if (ic->iformat->read_timestamp) &&
to :
} else if (ic->iformat->read_timestamp && strcmp(ic->iformat->name, "rm") &&
this is to avoid RMVB files calling av_estimate_timings_from_pts2() function as this will take long time.
I have compiled and tested this on Windows and ATV platform. For me, this is just a workaround instead a real bug fix as I did not look at what the function performed.

Thanks for sharing the fix. However, today I start to test it with your workaround avformat-52.dll. It won't play and after couple click on RMVB files, it shows Error: Playlist playback aborted. Too many consecutive failed items. I am using XBMC_for_Windows-9.04.1-repack2 and replace the avformat-52.dll. And I also tried the same thing on MAC with XBMC_for_Mac-9.04.1-repack.dmg. Both are having the same problem. It won't play. So I am wondering which version of XBMC you are using. Still hoping go back XBMC someday.
Although it still doesn't work for me, I really happy to get the help. Hope someday someone will get it fixed. Most of my video library are in RMVB format. That's is why I went with XBOX which is the only one machine back to 3 years ago that can play RM/RMVB file through the LAN with single remote controller. I miss that since xbox can't play HD format. I am only using HTPC now.

Hi linbl, this patch will not work on the XBMC_for_Windows-9.04.1-repack2 or XBMC_for_Mac-9.04.1-repack.dmg, it will only work on the latest SVN version (you can get from http://www.sshcs.com/xbmc/?mode=Builds). I tested at least it work on SVN :23263 version.
Because the implementation of ffmpeg codec has change so much since then.

Wow.... Cool.... Your workaround patch actually works. The RMVB file open fast as normal. Thank you! Thank you!
I am going to install into my Mac Mini and have XBMC as the default and only one program to run all the time. Time to go back to XBMC for your working patch.
However, have you notice that the RMVB movie played not really smooth? Is it because of the codec that needs to updated in the not too long future? Then it will play normal like any other formate : AVI, Divx, ....
Thank you! Hope they are going to use your code to get it fix officially. Glad I come to the forum and ask for help that someone really helped.
You just make my day..... :):):):)

Thanks for sharing. Quick question though. Wouldn't this code be compiled into the XBMC executable file? However, the precompiled patch you provided is a replacement DLL file. Or is the replacement DLL file a different patch than this code provides?
Thanks,

The RMVB playback issue is cause by the external codec FFMPEG. In current XBMC, is build as shared library. That make it easier to recompile, so I only need to compile 1 specific share library rather then rebuiding the whole XBMC.
After patching the RMVB loading time, the RMVB video can be played without waiting time, but the video playback is not smooth (even local media files), I only can get average around 15fps in both windows and ATV.
So I went to check ffmpeg again and found there was another bug fix regarding RM codec, and I apply this patch to XBMC ffmpeg codecs.
To my surprise the RMVB playback improved to around 24fps.
Feel free to try out the new patch (same shared library).

Quick silly question ... in order to compile these DLL files do I need to open a different project file in Visual C++. Cause I just did a compile of XBMC for Windows SVN 22516 using the directions on the wiki and it didn't compile any dll files, just the xbmc.exe file. Is there another project file that I would open to compile the dll file? Or is the DLL file source code even included on the XBMC SVN?
Thanks,

Ecgoh, This is just great great and great. I am very thankful for your update of the files. Since your workaround, I am finally being able to use XBMC in my mac mini and HTPC because of YOUR GREAT SUPPORT! I was using your patch file since last week to play RMVB files and I notice that the movie will be very lag to play and I am accept the fact of that because it is still better than nothing. That is NOTHING supported for RMVB from anyone in this forum. Either people will say don't use RMVB because of its bad encoding nor FFMPEG doesn't support RMVB. I was just disappointed. Once I saw your first post regarding the workaround patch files for mac and pc, I then start to post my 1st quesiton and I got your great support. This is just thank your great help. Now as TODAY, it is even better because of the NEW updated patch. The RMVB movies play even better and NO more lagging when I update the new patch. That is just excellent job you are doing. I was trying to delay the sound because it will always delay around 0.4 sec. Now no more, I am just trying to play 2 HD RMVB movie files. Both of them are playing without any delay or problems. I will be checking this forum very often now just in case you will have new update in the patch file.:grin:
It works and great. Excellent job!:):)
I am surprised, too!:D:D
Not like anyone else that doesn't help in RMVB but you are excellent in helping people who have RMVB library. Someone should be taking your file to a new STICKY topic for people who need fix the RMVB problem in XBMC in all kind. So people can grab your updated RMVB patch file very easy. This is the only fix and great fix for the RMVB XBMC problem. The ONLY!
I am just telling you that the RMVB movie play so smooth. No slow. No lag.
If you could share the source code for this second patch also that would be great.
Thanks,

Actually, I just update the /ffmpeg/libavformat/rmdec.c from FFMPEG project. You can google around to find the SVN for FFMPEG.
The FFMPEG version that current use in XBMC is quite old, there been many fixes already done in FFMPEG, that's why for RMVB, it play well in MPlayer since they use latest FFMPEG.
I am current working on another known XBMC problem which is the auto thumbnail generation causing crashed on ATV, which related to FFMPEG.
Is not easy just to use the latest FFMPEG since they make so much changes.
fyi you are breaking the gpl here. where's the sources to those dll's? (not that i care all that much but if the ffmpeg devs see you they will). unless you are just being inprecise and you have actually grabbed a whole new svn revision in which case the rev number is enough.

Does following the compiling steps outlined in the wiki compile these DLL files? Cause I've compiled XBMC a few times and I've never gotten any DLL files. Is there a separate project file I need to open in Visual C++ to compile the files in question to get the DLL file in question?

If no one creates a trac ticket with a patch file against current svn, this issue will NOT be looked into. This has been asked for this several times and that request is ignored. That's the way it works. Trac tickets are golden as they don't get lost in the noise of forum posts.
Also include in the trac a way to reproduce the problem so the fix can be tested. I don't do rmvb content so don't assume any other dev does it either.

Just a quick heads up, Spiff raised the following questions in the trac ticket. So if the individuals who are more aquanted with this fix could provide him with an answer (by posting to the trac ticket) that would be great:
***
1) our ffmpeg rmdec.c is identical to ffmpeg trunk (not long since we synced) - so the bit about grabbing it from ffmpeg trunk must be bollocks.
we of course updated the entire ffmpeg so we would also have the newest copy of that (atleast at that point in time).
so, can you please clear up my confusion; is this at all needed with CURRENT xbmc svn?

Thanks,
Harry

I find both of 2 source file that you modified are not from ffmpeg svn, is that right?

Taxigps,
Yes, they both not from ffmpeg, I just apply the related fix into the file in XBMC FFMPEG. Is not possible to apply the latest FFMPEG into XBMC since the files has changed so much.

Just thank you for the patch .It works ok until you press the pause/resume button ,the play frame rate drops again to 13fps.
But all I have to say is THANK YOU .Iīm now able to play my rmvb files on XMBC ,but canīt go to the WC while watching them!!! :)
XBMC build 24020 and transparency 2.0
Does anyone know if the changes made it into the 9.11 alpha version, or do I still need to apply the patch posted by ecgoh?
fixed in svn at r24735, thanks ecgoh.
Thanks for the update. Just tested with the latest SVN. Video is playing very smooth. However it still suffers long pause doing fast forward & back though....
Keep up the good work. Can't wait to migrate my myth box over.
