View Full Version : Blu-ray rips?

Hi all,
Was wondering if anybody may be able to help me out here. Though i will understand if most are unwilling due to the possible illegalities of the situation.
Over the past year and a bit, i have purchased quite a few Blu-ray movies. However, i only have them on disc but would like to watch them through my XBMC HTPC.
So, the real question is where is it possible to download blu-ray rips from, and what would i search for etc. etc.?
I would only be downloading the rips of movies that i actually own. I don't much feel like purchasing a blu-ray drive for my PC, getting the software and working out all the settings and learning so much new stuff just to rip a few blu-rays.
So, i figure for now, until it gets easier, i would just download the ones that i have physical copies of. So, everyone, where do you get your blu-ray rips from?
Oh, P.S., i know this is probably not the best place to post this, but it seemed most fitting out of everywhere else.
Thanks

<bump>
You are kidding, right? Do you actually expect ANY type of answer to such an absurd question??

No, i'm not kidding...Should i be? I don't understand the absurdedness of the question?
Sure, i may have some naïvety towards this subject, so i apologise if this is a question that should not have been asked.
But, given the popularity of DVD rips on bittorrent, Divx's, and all other flavours of downloadable movies i thought the same might have been so for Blu-rays...But, i guess not.
In any case, thanks for the reply, and pointing out to me that i should probably not expect any replies. I honestly didn't realise that this question was a ridiculous one.
Let's put it this way...
What you are asking is along the same lines of a junkie walking into a pharmacy and asking "Do you know where can I get some cocain? It is for medical purposes, so it's all ok..."
Nothing personal... but no one is THAT naive ;)

Yeah, okay, i get exactly what you mean!
In that case, though, do you have any recommended software for ripping my blu-rays to my hard drive?

Sorry, I have never even SEEN a BluRay in front of me yet - was just trying to explain you why no one would answer your question... :)

All I can say is that AfterDawn forum may be your help.
Just look in blu-ray discussion section.
Good luck!
hello, try this:
1. Get Blu-ray player for your PC
2. Get AnydvdHD
3. Optional step, get Tsmuxer if you want to strip your file down.
AnydvdHD will put your entire movie on your harddrive, using up to about 40gig space. With Tsmuxer you can strip language etc you dont need, this will save alot. If you want even smaller files you can also lower video quality, this however takes some time.
AnydvdHD is beeing programmed on an island in the caribbeans to avoid getting sued and costs some money, Tsmuxer however is free.
Good luck.

Actually, I think a closer analogy would be walking up to a cocaine addict and asking where he could find some cocaine. I simply refuse to believe that everyone is ripping their own BluRays around here, especially with popular plugins such as 66Stage and SceneReleases.
To answer the OP's question, read up on bittorrent.

Google it mayne
Seriously, I had to double check that this wasn't originally posted on 1st April. I'm pretty clueless about a lot of sh!te when it comes to media encoding, ripping, etc., but EVERYONE has heard of google for cryin' out loud.

I am speaking from the forum perspective here, Theo.
The waters threaded were, from the legal point of view, very dangerous for the forum... ;)
...there are no angels, but this is definitely not the forum for these questions :)

I can understand how my question may have not been the most appropriate. But i am not the DEVIL!!! I see myriad questions to do with DVD ripping, encoding, transcoding etc. on these forums.
So, because i ask about blu-ray what makes it any worse?

Does this work on the honor system? :p

Yeah...Yeah, it does. I have no motivation nor need to download blu-ray rips that i don't have. Not that it's really possible seeing as my monthly bandwidth limit is 6GB anyway....

The problem is that you didn't ask questions about ripping, encoding, transcoding, etc. regarding blu-ray. You asked about where to get already made rips from the internet.
Ripping for personal use is arguably only a violation of a purchase agreement between yourself and the creator of the media. At worst, it is a copyright violation, but one limited to yourself. Providing information to a person on how they might violate copyright does not cause the provider or the receiver to ACTUALLY VIOLATE that copyright. It only enables the receiver to violate the copyright if he chooses to do so.
On the other hand, providing information to a person on where they might go to download a copy of media whose copyright has ALREADY BEEN violated probably doesn't screw over the provider of the info or the receiver of the info, but it does have the opportunity to screw over the person uploading media. And, for that matter, it could implicate the provider of the info as a person who has downloaded that media and possibly uploaded it as well.
As such, ask as many questions as you like about ripping, burning, transcoding, etc., but don't ask us to sell out our friends on a public message board. Assuming we had any friends who did that kind of thing... Which we don't... Obviously.

Okay, yeah...Thanks, i really didn't think about it from that point of view.
One question from a ripping side of things, then; does ripping of any blu-ray movie work? I mean, last i heard there had to be an individual key for every movie or something? But i haven't kept up with everything, so i've really no idea.
And, sure, as somebody posted before i could use google (which i do anyway), but i like the personal responses from people who actually *know* as opposed to some random tutorial or guide from somebody who probably too that info from the internet anyway.

Haven't encountered any that I haven't been able to rip so far, but it doesn't mean there aren't some that I'll have trouble with in the future. I'm mucking around with different encoding settings to turn them into MP4 files and converting them to 720p cause my mini struggles a bit with 1080p mt2s files... and they take up HEAPS of space... I'll dig up some links when I get home if I remember.

This is a good guide on ripping blu rays. Although from the plex forums, you can get all the programs for windows and they'll play fine in XBMC.

google "doom9" and "videohelp" both have forums dedicated to this stuff (ripping your own discs to HDD for your own legitimate personal use). If you want information about obtaining illegal rips off the internet, you'll have to be a little more creative and figure it out. People generally don't want to admit to knowing about this stuff, even though almost every net savvy person is well aware of it.
Here's a hint: there's been a big international law suit in the news lately about one of the biggest sites involved in cataloging PIRATE material. If you still can't figure it out, maybe you should ask one of your PEERS, and if they don't know, keep going from PEER TO PEER until someone can help you.
(I still feel like you're putting us all on... no one can be this ignorant, right?)
If this were a USENET chat group, I'd say you were a troll.

Google.
www.makemkv.com also has a beta app out that is fairly easy to use. You supposedly don't even need AnyDVDHD to rip a bluray... I have anydvdhd so I haven't tested the key portion.
If you don't need subtitles makemkv is probably the closest thing to DVDShrink for Bluray right now.
Its beta so a bit buggy also search for eac3to as well, a command line ripper and muxer (that requires AnyDVDHD)
