What is the correct way to remove all traces of previously installed nvidia drivers?

I'm on Intrepid and was using 185.13 from "http://ppa.launchpad.net/thefirstm/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main" up until today, when update manager showed 185.19 was available. I let it upgrade and rebooted, after reboot it would only go into low graphics mode and not load the driver.

I was thinking I may have installed the driver before 185.13 incorrectly, as I run into this issue every time I upgrade my nvidia driver. I just want to start from scratch so hopefully I can install from the above repo and let update manager handle the updates from now on.

Does envy work from command prompt? In my experience in ubuntu, envy is the best application to handle installing and removal of the nvidia driver. If you installed it using apt you can use apt-get purge to remove all the traces that apt put in your system.

I had problems with 185.19 drivers... I manually installed and used the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.19-pkg1.run. That proved to be bad. I also couldn't start X. In fact, it didn't even load in low graphics mode.

I repeated the uninstall back to 185.13 and that worked fine. I then thought it may have been a fluke and tried again. Same issue.

My xorg.0.log showed segfaults (so did dmesg).

So, I then decided to try the other package : NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.19-pkg0.run (notice pkg0).

That worked :)

So, maybe the package manager installed the pkg1 which seems to have caused some issues.

Try manually installing the pkg0 one.

Has envy gotten caught up with the later NVIDIA drivers? Last I tried it they were woefully out of date and I followed directions here for installing it using the NVIDIA download. Ever since then I have been using various repos though for even less pain, I don't think I've gotten stuck in low rez mode. There's an nvidia command you can sudo run that will modify XORG, if you try to run nvidia-settings it will tell you what it is:blush:

I have problems with 185.19 too. My conf is with a 15" Samsung monitor @1024x768 and a 32" Samsung TV @ 1360x768. With 177.82 drivers no problems so far but I upgraded to 185.19 for vdpau support.
Now If my 32" tv is on there are no problems but if I change input from hdmi to TV or I switch off and then on again... my systems hangs and must reset.

Gone back to 177.82

@soder

Have you tried the xorg.conf from the wiki guide?

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup

sudo wget http://217.20.138.65/xbmc/xorg.conf -O /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I tried them just, and they didnt work either.

The red dazzle is there during boot, but then only black.
X starts up in 720p, cause I can login with VNC.

I guess this is where it goes wrong.
