this is my first foray into the world of streaming audio and video. I am running XBM on my Dell Vostro 1000 laptop using Wix XP Home. SO far, all is fine with the exceptions of numerous mislabled album art

My questions is this - can I stream video/audio from XBMC directly to my television? I don't have an XBOX, I have a PS3, TIVO all hooked up via a wireless network

It is nice to be able to listen and view audio and video on my laptop but I don't need XBMC to do that. Streaming these to my tv would be THE reason to use this program

Any help is greatly appreciated

thanks,

you wouldn't be able to stream but you could use your tv as a second monitor if you don't mind putting holes in your walls:laugh:

briefe search of internet tells me you have 2 x options - depending on your telly capabilities.

1) if your telly is plasma/LCD with 15 pin VGA socket. all you will need is a vga 15pin male to vga 15pin male cable

2) if your telly has a round 4 x pin s-video plug, you will then need male s-video to male s-video cable.

as a general rule of thumb, more pins = better quality.

hope this helps

I appreciate the input

This is way to complicated and I really don't want to be running wires from my laptop to my television. This is the 21st century - I am trying to avoid wires as much as possible.

Four years ago I bought a wireless home theatre system (5.1) from Panasonic that kicks ass. It plays EVEY single format that I throw at it. I have a $650 Denon unit in my basement that only plays store bought DVD's and nothing else. If Panasonic can create a wireless system I am sure XMBC and Boxee or some other company will [very soon] come up with a wireless box to stream video/audio from a laptop to a television.

Until that device is created, I'll still be a cable subscriber.

That being said, the XMBC interface is VERY cool

well if what you wanted was a wire-LESS solution ....

what about a 5ghz wireless A/V transmitter/receiver solution?

basically its a video and stereo transmitter, but will work for your application.

you plug into your computers S-Video socket and sound card. (a 3.5mm stereo mini jack -> stereo RCA cable and a 2 x male to male s-video cables will be necessary)

and transmit across the room, house etc to the receiver which sits next to your telly, and converts the wireless signals into s-video and stereo audio again for you.

this may help you achieve a wire-LESS solution you require, although the quality you achieve can be effected by many factors.
