Nevermind, it was apparently a XBMC issue, fixed upon upgrade. Delete this thread please
Is there a way to make Stark use the generic background backdrops only when a file-specific backdrop is unavailable? When I browse through my film collection every now and then I can see one of the "generic" backdrops (one from the folder set as main menu backgrounds) for a second, before the proper backdrop for that film loads. Not that it was a very serious issue, but perhaps there's a way to solve that.
