View Full Version : Vista + MCE remote + XBMC = Nightmare....
It shouldn't be a nightmare...... XMBC should either have a "remote selection" screen or at the very least a simple plugin to make this work.........
As it is, I have read literally hundreds of pages off these boards and am still non the wiser (is the stuff from 2005 about remotes still applicable?)
So my premise and question is this...... It is 2009, I am running Vista x86 Ultimate using the built in media centre for recording TV (so need the remote to continue working in Vista) and I am using XBMC for ease of viewing Movies and other TV.
Is there a simple plugin for XBMC that will allow full functionality of the remote within XBMC? If not can anyone please point me in the direction of a "HOW TO" or tutorial that is up to date and leaves Vista in a remote capable state.
Thanks in advance for any help offered.....................
Laffer.

I definitely recommend setting up EventGhost on your Vista machine - there are a lot of tutorials and posts on how to do that - Waffa's post above is your starting point but also search the forums. There are instructions on how to use your remote in both XBMC and MC and switch between the two with ease. EG has a built-in XBMC plugin and is very easy to configure.

+1 for EventGhost. Just make sure you DON'T disable the HID service if you want to keep the remote working for Media Center.
Since you will leave the HID service on, don't map the arrow buttons, select button, number buttons, or the exit button. These are handled automatically by the HID service.
I seem to remember something about a "context folders" in Eventghost. They allow you to control only XBMC, or only VMC until closed and then the control reverts back to the default.
Does anyone have anymore info on this?
Thanks
Figured out my own solution. Here is the xml: http://pastebin.com/mfdb606c. Open it in EG and you should be good to operate XBMC and VMC with a MCE remote. You should have the HID service disabled.
This starts XBMC with the Print button and VMC with the normal green button.
Please give feedback if I have made mistakes, but it is working well for me at this point.

EventGhost will solve your issue. Go to the EG forum if you need help with that app, if that is what you decide to use.
Nothing native in XBMC will fix your issue.
If you use my xml from above it should work well to control XBMC for you using a MCE remote and EG. The tutorials need to be cleaned up a bit because EG has changed since most of them were written.

Ok so after reading this and some other posts here. I got Evenghost and my Pinicale remote to control 90% of the things in XBMC.
What I want now is to be either able to fire up XBMC when I press the green button on my remote or media center keyboard or disable the button all together.
I plan to use my HTPC soley fro playback of my DVD titles stoe on teh HD. It will be on constantly and will have a simple power management scheme. If it crashes for whatever reason, I will have XBMC start again when the computer reboots.
Can this be done?
I just used IR Server Suite for my MCE remote http://forum.team-mediaportal.com/mce-replacement-plugin-165/ - It maps all buttons as per the IRSSmap.xml file and can disable media centre functions. 2 minutes to install - Done.
Is there any reason why the windows version of XBMC can't have support for the MCE remote natively?
It seems by far the most popular control device.

Anyway to get this to work with Dual monitors? I've installed it and it works perfectly but XMBC keeps opening on my primary monitor

Not sure on this one though you should be able to do it via the ATI / Nvidia driver.
