sound only when runnning from gnome?

i've got ubuntu 8.10 running on my box. i get full sound when running xbmc from gnome, but not if i run it direct (through one of the guides found on here). aplay works just fine w/o gnome. any ideas?

this is going through s/pdif out on my intel board.

Sounds like some pulseaudio retardedness, try disabling it.

don't think so... i uninstalled it through synaptic.

Make sure your user is a member of the 'audio' group.

interestingly enough, now that i'm going w/o gdm, my jittering while panning issues seem to have gone away.
