Anyone running XBMC for Linux on Zotac's new GeForce 9300-ITX WiFi mini-itx motherboard? How well does it perform?

i just ordered one,including a E5200 cpu and 2gb memory.
my only indecision is the case.
cannot decide what case will be best to accommodate a cpu cooler that would make it as silent as possible.
any suggestions will be great
ps: needs to take full size blu-ray drive.

I'm running a similar setup in a Low-Profile "Zignum Sphere black" HTPC case. The CPU cooler I'm using is a "Scythe Shuriken Rev. B" which is very powerful, very quiet and small enough in height to nicely fit the case while still running a slim 120mm fan. I also replaced a case cooler with a Noiseblocker 80mm which is very quiet.

I'm running a full size blu-ray drive as well and a 3.5" HDD. Additional 3.5" external slot is also available e.g. for cardreader or maybe later a CI-Modul.

I'm running one in a Jetway JC203 case. This will be too small for your needs as you require a disc tray. Most of the deep media centre cases should fit your requirements. This site recommends some http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=52
I've not tested the Aeon skin yet but with PMIII on a minimum linux installation I'm getting 10% CPU usage with 7 dropped frames on the killer sample. This is with a E1400 Celeron and 4GB Ram(2 should suffice).
The only thing that I came across is the power supply, this motherboard requires 90W. I've also not managed to get the wifi working yet...but to be honest I've not really looked into it that much. Maybe someone else here can help you(us) with that !!!

There is the A+ Cupid 3 (http://www.cowcotland.com/articles/418-2/a-cupid3.html) which fufils your reqirements
Personaly i'm gonna take a Thermaltake SD-100 (http://www.thermaltake.com/product_info.aspx?PARENT_CID=C_00001373&id=C_00001374&name=SD100+Mini&ov=n&ovid=) even if I have to pay 20 more euros for a slim bluray player.

Well the slim one are usualy more expensive (~25 %), an burns discs at a slower speed.
The good ones ( if your don't want to burn blu-rays) are from Optiarc (sony)

ok i narrow it to 3 cases,

APEX MI-008 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=270392604667
APEX MI-100 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=270391179782
they have the same spec ,so i guess i matter of test. witch will looking better under the lcd tv???
witch you suggest?:laugh::grin:
OR
Sugo SG05 http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductID=982116&source=froogle (I GET TO UNDERSTAND THAT FINDING A OPTICAL DRIVE TO FIT THIS BOX PROPERLY IS A PROBLEM,BUT IT TAKES FULL SIZE GRAPHICS CARD)

P@co
2009-06-14, 13:44
Well I spent my last saturday in Mongallet (a street in Paris with about 100/150 computer shops) looking for a suitable case for the Zotac, I found only 3 cases that were "suitable" in terms of looks and quality :
- the Sugo SG05
- the Thermaltake SD100
- the Lian Li PC-Q07

The termatake is fine because it's really thin (7cm) and the Lian Li can fit a regular atx drive and a regular DVD drive.
Then if you want to fit a graphic card the Sugo is your only choice
If you're looking for a blu-ray slim player look for the Optiarc 5600S ;)

gui
2009-06-15, 04:01
unfortunally the the Optiarc 5600S £159.87 price tag is to much,so i think i will have to go with the £50.00 Sony BDU-X10S http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158605# and the £45.00 Xcase Atomic Itx Cube Case http://www.xcase.co.uk/X-Case-Atomic-Cube-Black-With-Psu-p/xc-atomic-cubebk.htm

I did not use the stock fan, but placed a big pure copper heatsink.
And used a 140mm fan (the only fan in the whole system) on top of the case, need to cut a hole first in the case...

Nope, i choose not do do it, because my aim is to have all my media on harddisk (and i am lazy. Dont want to swap disc everytime i want to watch something ).

If i buy new dvd/blue rays discs etc, i rip them first onto my hdd with the use of another pc which has a blue ray player.

simon22
2009-06-24, 23:30
You dont need any drivers to get the zotac to output over hdmi. You cannot use both VGA and HDMI simultaneously with the zotac. Disconnect all display cables except for HDMI and then turn it on and it should POST and disaply the bios, if not then check your TV, hdmi cable or otherwise your board is defective.

i noticed that the stock intel cpu cooler it bend slightly the motherboard once fitted,if the cooler does not touch properly the cpu surface could this give problems???my psu is 150w would this be ok to run e5200+hdd+dvd drive+3 fans?is driving me mad

o_dog
2009-07-07, 15:06
if the cooler does not touch the cpu surface you wont have much of a cooling at all and most likely the computer will turn itself off pretty fast depeding on the cpu, if it touches a little bit, it will run ok until the cpu has to work a bit harder.

150W i more then enough, dunno how much a full size optical drive runs at though.

Maybe one of memoory sticks is bad?

It's kind of hard to determine since it seems you can't get to the bios and look at the setings.

I have this board with an e5200 dual core Intel, the Apex MI-008 case, 2GB of OCZ PC6400 RAM, and a WD 320GB HDD. I'm dual booting Win7 and a minimal Ubuntu 9.04 install with XBMC autostarting.

I've got to say it's a solid board, and the Linux version of XBMC with VDPAU as the renderer kicks Windows to the curb even with DXVA up and running. Once all of the bugs are worked out that is. :)

Comparing framerates and CPU usage on the "Killa" Planet Earth sample yield surprisingly different results. On Linux with VDPAU as the renderer @1080p, my CPU utilization is sub 10% on both cores and I have no dropped frames. On Windows7 in XBMC, without DXVA helping, my CPU stats spike and stay in the low 90% range and about 16 dropped frames. DXVA through MPC-HC yields slightly lower CPU stats, although not as good as VDPAU, and a lower dropped frame count.

The main hurdle to overcome with the Linux install was getting all of the audio over HDMI settings correctly. First I couldn't get audio at all over HDMI, then I got audio while watching most of my files, but no audio through the GUI. Then after much thread combing and some help from other members, I now have fully working audio. I have GUI audio prompts, audio in all my A/V files, including flash files, and have had no problems other than the occasional badly encoded file causing problems.

Most of the HD stuff I have on my network is MKV contained h.264 encoded video. Most is 720p while I have some at 1080p. I've yet to see anything this build cannot handle. I don't use the wifi part of the the board, so I can't comment on that, but I'm thinking about putting a TV tuner card in the open slot and see how that works.

The only complaint I have is the lack of waking from S3 standby from USB. Other than that, I'm very happy how the whole thing turned out.

While it would be nice, I can't seem to find one for less than about $50US. Getting up and walking the five or six steps to turn on my HTPC isn't that bad.

ok retested,it works but it only appear on the tv screen once is in window, cannot see any booting process,is the same for you guys?plus the memory problem is starting to get on my nerves. sometime does boot with memory in both dimms and sometime not. im using CORSAIR XMS2 DDR2 CM2X1024-6400 800MHZ

I have the exact same problem with my current HTPC; unless in Windows/Linux, no display. I've always blamed my amp since it's connected through that, but haven't really done any testing...

Speaking of my HTPC, I'm about to give it a make-over. This thread's got me decided on the Zotach board along with a Scythe Shuriken SCSK-1100 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185097&Tpk=Shuriken%20SCSK-1100), but I'm stuck at the case...
Am probably gonna go for the SST-LC12B-120 (http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/p_spec.php?pno=lc12&area=usa). Any thoughts?

Sorry for semi hi-jacking the thread, but unless someone tells me "no, that combo won't work", I'm probably gonna go for the hardware I've already chosen ;)

@ gui.

go into bios settings at boot, set load optimized defaults, save, reboot. Go back into bios, change your gpu settings to 512mb. After that xbmc should show two cores and performance should increase. (hopefully) :)

cheers

I have followed this process and the consumption of the CPU has increased.

With bios factory settings work for me better. :confused2:

In windows you can install both the nvidia HDMI and realtek drivers. The nvidia driver lets you send audio via HDMI and the realtek lets you use the analogue audio jacks and SPDIF.

To send all audio via HDMI go into control panel - sound - audio tab and then set the 'default driver' to NVIDIA HDMI. All audio including XBMC should then pass via HDMI. If you have changed any of the audio settings in XBMC from their default settings you may need to also select HDMI as the audio driver from the audio settings screen.

Do you mean to ask if you can make it run passive (with no fan)?

You can, but the heatsink is ridiculously huge. You seem to be pretty handy in the workshop from your pics, I'd just fabricate a mount for a stealth fan if noise is the issue.

He bolted to the chassis cpu.

I put the cpu in Underclock (6X) (1.8 Ghz) and maintains the temperature at 65 º to 100% load
1080 and reproduced with 17bM / S

but the chipset is set to 78 º

so I've had to put the cpu fan to cool the chipset too

Is it a normal temperature of 60ºC GPU Idle and 64ºC load?

I'm having problems with blue screens locking system :(

Shouldn't lock up yet. have you ran Memtest x86 to test your RAM? are you overclocking?

I have one of this with an e8400 passively cooled (GeminII) on an SG05, use it for "console-like" gaming and have never had any lock ups even after 3 hours of prototype.

I'm using the same ram, corsair XMS2

Does the e5200 play HD Hulu videos ok? And did you have any issues with the stock Intel HSF fitting in the Apex MI-008 case with it's stock psu? From reading this (http://www.silentpcreview.com/article905-page5.html) I didn't know if it would fit. I plan on building a similar setup except with 4GB of RAM and a 8GB CFtoSata chip instead of a HDD.

I've had no issues with flash playing. I haven't tried Hulu per se, but I have view streaming flash as well as saved swf files and used Boxee under Windows without issue.

i noticed that the stock intel cpu cooler it bend slightly the motherboard once fitted,if the cooler does not touch properly the cpu surface could this give problems???my psu is 150w would this be ok to run e5200+hdd+dvd drive+3 fans?is driving me mad

Hi, try the following

1 - Boot with only one DIMM
2 - Enter BIOS Setup
3 - Go to Frequency / Voltage Control
4 - Set MEM Voltage Control at 2.0v
5 - Save, disconnect, insert the second DIMM, and it should work fine

I'm having some problems with the wifi driver, but there's info on the ubuntu forum on how to compile this driver.
From what I've seen, with a Pentium Dual Core E2160, the CPU is at 40º and the Nvidia Chipset at 60º, at an ambient temperature of 30º
