Apple TV and 720p scene rips

I recently grabbed an Apple TV off of craigslist and was disappointed to see that it can't really keep up with run of the mill h.264 720p Blu-Ray rips.
These are no doubt high bit rates and profile 4.1.

Anyone have any tips on a workflow for this type of content?
Are there certain releases to grab that have less aggressive encodes? Do some of you really just re-encode to a lower profile before watching?

Handbrake has a ATV setting and it is free.

But those ATV settings are meant to be used with the standard ATV software, not with our non-accelerated XBMC.
