I simply wonder what you guys use to get the video/audio from the PC to the TV. At home I use VGA, as in using my TV as a monitor, but now I am custom building a system for my cousin who has to use Component. So what is the best way of doing this? HDMI to Component, S-Video to Component, VGA to component?

So, what do you personally use, and what is your suggestion to what I would do with my cousins setup? I have no limitations in terms of hardware, so I would like to know what I should do before picking anything out.

I ultimately would want his system to run as stable and smooth as possible.

Well definitely don't do s-video to component.

I am currently using VGA-out to VGA-in on my TV. In your case I would most likely recommend HDMI-Component, or VGA-Component if you want to save a little bit of money. I don't think the difference would be too great?? Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I do plan on upgrading my video card soon to one that supports HDMI out so that I can use the HDMI input on my TV. I think this would allow for the best possible picture.

If your building a new system get a video card with component out.

How do you get the sound to go through the HDMI cable? Wouldn't the sound by coming from the sound card? Basically my question is how does the HDMI out on your video card retrieve the sound from your sound card?

Thanks!

Most video cards that have HDMI have a spdif cable that hooks to sound/onboard sound's spdif out, to make the digital audio go through the HDMI. Some HDMI cards install a audio driver as well, then you select HDMI-Audio as your preferred audio device in Control Panel.

What nnaarrnn mentioned about the spdif cable is correct :) in my case my motherboard also has two pins directly on the motherboard for audio out (spdif01) that can be connected directly to the video card with a small two pin jumper cable for for hdmi audio that came with the video card.

Just go get a new video card. It will make life easier, and will probably save you some Benjamins.
