can't play video files from DVD...

Hi,

I ran into a weird problem: I can't seem to be able to play video files (.avi) from the DVD from under XBMC.

Here is what I have:

- all DVDs I have written in DVD format play back fine.
- Video files (.avi) written on the DVD do NOT play under XBMC (none of them - I've tried over 10 different disks)
--- XBMC does seem to mount the drive and I can navigate the directory structure, but on any playback attempt I'm getting 'Too many consecutive errors encountered' or smth like that

- The video files from the same DVD can be played back just fine by Totem or Xine

- The same video files from the harddrive can be played back by XBMC just fine as well...

- the 'xbmc' user I'm running the XBMC system under is the member of 'video' and 'cdrom' groups

So, it seems that for whatever reason, once files are written on the DVD, XBMC can not play them back. The possibility of the hardware failure is eliminated by the the fact that the same DVD plays back on the same system just fine from other video players.

Codec problems are also eliminated by the fact that XBMC can play exactly the same video files from the hard drive...

Any ideas/hints what might be causing it?

I'm using the latest build ( 17631 )...

Well, I snooped around - still nothing. Can't play the files.... Is it smth that happened within recent builds? I seem to recall that it wasn't a problem some time ago (.... how long?... 1-2 months?) Copying the avi file from DVD to harddrive - plays no problem.

Can it be that XBMC is always 'assuming' that the DVD must contain only DVD-VIDEO content?..

To any developers monitoring this forum: should I open a ticket for this? Or this is a well known issue with a known workaround?

Am I the only XBMC user who stores the video files on DVD media and ever tried to play them back??? :)

I too have this issue. Using XBMC 8.10 final. I havnt had time to dive into the log to see whats up, but i cannot play any *.avi files stored on DVD-R. Same DVD-R's play perfectly fine in the xbox, or on the computer using anything other than XBMC

Hmm... so seems like not my settings after all....

Has anyone been able to play video files successfully from DVD media? Or CD media (I've came across couple of posts mentioning that CD media didn't have that problem - but that was over half a year ago, not sure if it's still relevant).

For the record, whoever would ran into a similar problem, there is a ticket opened against this bug: http://xbmc.org/trac/ticket/5296. Someone has created a patch for that (attached to the ticket).

I tried it yesterday and so far it actually works! (and so far, without seemingly any adverse effects).

To the developers: Is it possible to apply this patch against the SVN trunk? It's been sitting there for the last 3-4 months.. In my opinion it fixes a very critical issue - in my case the whole purpose of running a media center was to be able to play numerous videos I've recorded to DVDs & CDs, so without it the system loses at least half of its purpose...

... taking the last words back. Not sure if it's patch related or not, but seems like at the very least the patch does not fix all of the problem:

- from time to time the DVD with video files would lock up the whole system
--- that seems to be always the case when the DVD is inserted _before_ the XBMC is started up, but can't tell for sure as I haven't tried it to many times yet

But, definitely, it's still better than nothing.

I do not know if this would help in anyway BUT I thought I would post it. I run Mythbuntu on both of my machines and I have the intrepid PPA on my main machine which is r16??? and I run svn 17292 on the other as well as my test machine and did not have very good dvd playback on any of them until I install the restricted drivers dvdcss in Mythbuntu (Mythbuntu Control Panel) (I would assume the same if you are running Ubuntu only as well) But ever since all 3 machines works perfectly for dvd playback.

I also added the eject fix on all three machines and that works great as well.

dev.cdrom.lock=0 to the bottom of /etc/sysctl.conf uncomment the line it is already there and add it if not.

Also, the patch mentioned above seem to work as well...

With regards to the previous post about 'XBMC freeze', that problem seems to be unrelated: with this particular DVD even unpatched XBMC system locks up.... So, so far the patch holds :).

You can apply the patch this way:
cd /path/to/your/xbmc/source
patch -p0 < /path/to/the/patch

Then you probably didn't compile your own version of XBMC yet. Applying the patch requires recompiling XBMC from source - so make yourself familiar with that first. For beginners it isn't easy and if you are a total beginner you should probably wait until the bug is fixed in XBMC.

There is a workaround for this bug, too which does not require XBMC recompilation. You can create a symbolic link to your CD-Rom drive within your Movie Folder. Let's say "/path/to/my/movies" is the path you store all your Movies in and "/media/cdrom" is your cdrom drive. Just open a console and type:

ln -s /media/cdrom /path/to/my/movies/CD-Rom

To watch a movie from DVD you do no longer watch it from CD directly, but change to your Movie-Library and select the folder "CD-Rom".
