I run the windows version of XBMC, but my 1TB drive is almost filled up, and I've started to think about building a file server that I can stick in the closet to store more content, and moving it off my desktop. I know there are very slim and quick linux distros out there for file servers, but I'm more interested in seeing if anyone here has build a system using an atom (single or dual core) for a file server to stream their HD content off of (i've got more 1080p videos than 720p). my network is already gigabit, with everything so far supporting jumbo frames up to 7 or 9k, so im not worried if my network can handle the streaming, what I'm worried about is if the atom is powerful enough to serve the content when requested, without causing any lag?

If anyone has experience with the atom please chime in.

I use an old PIII 450 to serve my 1080 content. It really doesn't take much cpu to serve files, no matter the bitrate. If you've got the gigabit network going already then you'd definitely be fine.

I believe that at least one unRAID user has done it - I am using Celeron on my systems, some users just underclock these for more savings. FWIW 100meg is enough for 1080 streams, multiple 1080 apparently. Given a choice I still prefer Gig ethernet though <shrug>
