I would like to see this: I turn on my ps3 and see the XBMC icon. I select it and it brings me to the XBMC GUI that is synced with my windows client. After I am done I would like to close XBMC and be brought back to my original ps3 menu.
wouldnt this require custom firmware or cracked firmware or xbmc being signed by SCEE?
pretty sure it wont work until we get the ps3 cracked
Can't you use the browser on the PS3 to access the web front end already? I know that browser sucks (better than the other consoles though) so you could also install linux on the PS3 (Sony allows this) and then install a real browser.
I don't understand. I don't have an Xbox - I have a PS3. I assume that XBMC runs on the Xbox and presents a front end similar to what XBMC provides on Windows. It's a nice front end. I'd like to have that on my PS3 instead of the PS3's immature menuing system. How does this require custom firmware? They made this for the Xbox - why can't they make it for the PS3 too?
Lacking that, what is the web front end you speak of?
I'm about to embark on throwing out the cable company and going with an application called PlayOn (see http://themediamall.com for details). This can nicely hook into services like Hulu, CNN, CBS and Netflix. That's on the source content side. But on the player side it presents a Media Server to the PS3. What's missing is a nice interface on the PS3. One that looks beautiful but also one that can provide me some help managing all the media that is accessible. I was hoping that XBMC would do the trick. If not, does anybody know of anything else that might foot the bill?

Web front end...I made a post asking how to get the XBMC on the ps3 and a guy said I cant get the GUI. I could only stream. He said Web front end is what I would be looking for but they (developers) didn't make one for the ps3..
I imaged a web front end was the GUI over the network or something. I wouldn't want to lose my ps3 functionality though.
I know that Orb (see Org.com) has software that you can install on your PC that will index the media you have on your local LAN and serve it up via UPnP that the PS3 can then play. Additionally Orb sets up a web page (something like myorb.orb.com) that you can get to in order to stream the contents of your media library to any computer connected to the Internet. You could also go to myorb.orb.com on the PS3 using it's web browser. Maybe this XBMC has something similar.
But I'm not looking for that! Again, I assume XBMC runs directly on the Xbox replacing whatever menuing system that is there and instead gives you a "Media Center experience" similar to what you see if you install XBMC on your Windows desktop. I say i assume because I don't have an Xbox to try this out on. Surely somebody here can confirm my suspicions.
Assuming that's the case, I want XBMC to run directly on my PS3 and give me a better menuing experience directly on my PS3 itself. Is there anything like that?
