Hi,

I've been a user of xbmc for Xbox since day 1 (when it was xbmp) I've recently switch to xbmc for windows (to get mkv support) but im having problem with having 5.1 sound with stereo encoded file.

I have a Intel DG45ID board which has a IDT 92XX sound card w/Fiber output. If i play anything in WMP, i get 5.1 no matter what (dvix, xvid, vob, mp3) even if the file is stereo encode. I've installed the latest driver.

But in xbmc all i get is stereo (for stereo encoded file) if i play a VOB or MKV with ac3 then i get 5.1 and all is fine. I have digital out,dts,ac3 and Output to all speakers checked. Even if i play an mp3 file, i only get stereo (with output to all speaker checked)

Anyone has any ideas where is the problem / what i should try ?

Thank you for your time !

Your player (XBMC) will only output DD5.1 when the original source audio is encoded with DD5.1.

So, when playing a stereo MP3, the sound output will only be stereo.

???

I doubt it ... why would there be an option 'output to all speaker' if that option didnt do anything ? Cuz this is exactly what happens if on or off, nothing ...
Unless your telling me there is absolutely NO WAY to get 5.1 sound out from the xbmc Windows build from stereo encoded source.

That option ' output to all speaker' works fine on the Xbox version of xbmc. If i have it check on my xbox i do get sound in 5.1 with stereo encoded source.

Anybody has any other ideas ? I know alot of ppl r using stereo sound or HDMI but there has to be someone out there with a ' working setup ' with spdif and stereo encoded file. Or at least if someone could confim that what im looking for is impossible. Maybe on the linux build then ?

Ya I thought I noticed this also????
I have an old enough reciever but even with mp3 to it, it will output to all speakers or even on stereo it upsamples the output to all unless I flcik the receiver to stereo only.

But watching some video this evening it was stereo?

What kind of sound card are you using ? My Receiver is set on auto so, whatever it gets it will output so im 100% sure its getting 2ch audio from xbmc .. with video (stereo encoded) or mp3.
But like i said vob / mkv gets me 5.1 sound.

Using Intel DG45FC motherboard and SPDIF output also these are set in XBMC.

That setting works only on the Xbox platform, if I'm not mistaken.
I have my receiver set to All Channels for stereo signals (unless I'm in for a critical listening sessions, then I switch to Direct). I would say that most receivers have similar settings available. One solution is All Channels, another is using Dolby Prologic II in Music mode (on the receiver).

Ah ok thanks for the info, then i will wait maybe that feature will work at some point down the line. I really dont want to start playing with my Amp mode. As for Dolby Prologic II It's not a good choice sound wize imo

My Problem is not solved but at least i wont waste my time trying different sound cards for nothing !

Thanks guys, :;):
