View Full Version : Which Blu-Ray drive to get for XBMC/Linux?
Hey guys,
I am thinking about putting a BD Rom into my HTPC for Bluray playback with XBMC on linux.
Can anyone post their thoughts about which drive to get? I was considering the LG Electronics GGC-H20L.
In general, does playback work well from BD Drives with XBMC on Linux?
Thanks,
boba

from my knowledge, blu-ray playback is not directly supported in linux. For playback you would need something like powerdvd and use windows.
Crypto not yet completely broken, especially the BD+ stuff. Doom9 is where much of that research is being done and last I saw some of the devs there were holding back due to legal concerns - been awhile since I last looked however so feel free to correct. So far as I know only SlySoft's AnyDVD-HD can allow you to rip ALL BD movies and it's Windows only. You will also find that Linux doesn't support BD menus etc and just the raw M2TS streams which is "interesting" if what you want to play is a movie with branching.....
I'd suggest doing what I do, ripping on a Winders box and then compressing the main movie into a high resolution MKV file for playback on XBMC. I have done this a great deal and written it up a few times, need to write a nice clear tutorial here but not had time yet. You lose extras and menus but I find the 40% reduction in disk space and ability to store on a NAS worth it. <shrug>
In current state i would defiantly wait, i didn't buy a DVD drive before 2007.

BLKMGK is correct, no one in the Linux community has even started writing a BD-J menu library to support Blu-Ray’s menuing system and the decryption library that is in development is still in its infancy, nowhere near as polished a DeCSS for DVD decryption. Theoretically any Blu-Ray drive would be compatible with any Linux but there is simply no reliable way to playback the content of Blu-Ray disks on Linux.
