View Full Version : DVD Playback Issue
I've recently run across an issue and I'm not certain if it's related to the newest versions with the external player patch (I'm running Jester's 17089, but have tested others as far back as Jan 1) or totally unrelated.
My issue is that when attempting to playback movies from DVD I get a brief scan of the dvd rom (light flashes) and then nothing.
I've attached a small log showing the issue HERE (http://pastebin.com/m6b3943ac)
This drive is the ONLY optical drive installed in the system and there are no daemon tools or other virtualization software running or installed.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!
Just as an update, I've added the DVD drive as a 'Source' and attempted to play using My Videos and the same error occurs.
Is no one else playing actual DVDs with XBMC? I was hoping that others were having this issue to help in resolution...
Sorry for making two threads in short order, but I figured it was inappropriate to add two unrelated problems to a single thread.
Using Jester's 17124 SVN build on WinXP SP3, I cannot play any video DVDs, commercial or burned on a DVD-R. However, XBMC has no problem playing files written to ISO9660/UDF CDs and DVDs.
In the following error log, I attempt to play a burned video DVD-R, then a commercial stamped DVD, then a file off a UDF DVD-R.

Thanks for your help!

Jester, I have just installed your 17143 build and the error still occurs. I have attached a complete debug log here: http://pastebin.com/m6380af4c and have highlighted the relevant information.
as a brief recap, there is only one optical drive installed and no virtual drives such as MagicISO or Daemon Tools. This function worked previous to Jan 09 though I hadn't installed any SVNs between November and January so I'm not certain where the error occurred.
As you can see in the logs, the DVD is detected (in this case Chronicles of Riddick but I've tried many others with the same experience) and a thumb is searched for but, when attempting to play this disc nothing happens.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Done. Similar messages in the log:

Incidentally, is there any way I can do a parallel install of XBMC versions or at least do a complete backup of the program state? Installing the latest SVN buggered up my database and I'm having to rebuild it now with the older SVN I was using. (yes I backed the database up, that didn't seem to help as after restoring the database I couldn't see any thumbs or artwork)
Thanks.
It may also be worth noting that my DVD drive is being accessed via AHCI (rather than ATA). One would think that this should be transparent to applications, but if the dvdnav libraries are mucking around near the device level, it could conceivably cause problems.

can you confirm that ANY original DVD (so not just one...) is causing this issue
i'll do a test later with some dvd's too....

All four of the video DVDs I tried had the same result (three commercial pressed titles, one DVD-R). I can try a handful more tonight if you like.
Same here, tried with couple of DVDs. http://pastebin.com/m5e4b8b9f

Kricker's SVN 17152 (without Intel patch, happens with Jester's builds also).
It's regression from one of the commit and we're working on it.
Not needed. It's a regression and we're working on it.

thanks, I've merged the two threads about this issue to keeps things in one place (now that they have been explained.)

Glad to hear, thank you!

Wiso, thanks for the response. I'm glad to hear that it's a known issue and is being investigated!
Do you happen to have a TRAC number (if one exists) so that I might monitor this?
Thanks alot,
M

there is one for a issue like it on linux, however you will see when it gets fixed when they checkin a new SVN update (or do a search on libdvdnav or dvdnav)

Jester, I know you hate building extra SVNs for specific people, but would it be possible to generate a pre-17043 build w/o intel updates and with external player? That would tie me and several other users over for a while.

i'd rather focus of moving the intel patch out of the SVN and making it an option for advancedsettings.xml
but in the mean time i'll see what i can do ;)
ps
why pre 17043?
Jester, according to the TRAC, 17043 is when the DVD playback issue was introduced. Nothing really ground breaking has occurred since and if we(I) can get XBMC working and playing DVDs and with the OPTION of using externalplayer for difficult files, then that would be just about perfect.
Thanks!

it's fixed (well reverted...) in the latest build (starting from 17261) which you can download from my site.
extra build with patched external player is coming in a few
Thanks for the help Jester!
Hello,
I am using The latest Jester Build 17272 and have problems playing SOME DVD's. (since build 261 the DVD Playback should be working again, due to the revertion of Changesrt 17043)
All DVD's i tested are official ones, no selfmade ones.
The DVD's that making problems (i tested 8 of them) Starts normal, play's the Intro, but when the DVD Menue should appear, I have just a blank screen.
I see the Memory usage in the debug status line at the top of the screen changing, till i press stop or AltF4, or ESC to get out.
After that XBMC Freezes, the Debug status line freezes also and I can only exit XBMC by killing the Process.
here the link to the Debug Log :

I can confirm zyxel13's problem with the 17272 Jester build. It occurs with most DVDs I've tried (encrypted and non), but I've found at least one disc which doesn't seem to have a problem. The problem seems to always occur with the menus, especially animated menus.
I'll post more information and logs as I narrow down the issue.
