After searching the forum, reading the faq and looking at the online manual , i am confused on how to set up a network in association with xbmc.

I have two computers running windows xp, the one upstairs with all my media on it will be the server and my computer downstairs will be the client. Both computers have the latest edition of xbmc installed on them.

My network consists of bringing my internet feed into a linksys router and then hardwired from there out to my two computers, simply stuff. I know how to share files between the two computers.

What settings do i need to set on each computer in order so i can share my upstairs media to my downstairs client in association with xbmc? Are the upstairs database files being shared to the downstairs client, not really getting it?

Thanks
TC

Is xbmc server/client software like J.River Media Center?, I tried to network two xp computers at home via smb client and all i could do was access the media files but without the database files being served i wasnt getting any of the fanart, movie art etc.

any help would be appreciated.

Thanx

If your computers are already networked, just simply just have to add a SMB source in XBMC.

as stated, you must have a working computer network for this to function the way you want.

xbmc is "simply" a media playback tool, and has no server capability of its own as such....(or any use to you atm)

i think you will find the "set content" option on the context menu for your share (labled "source" in xbmc) very useful.

it is here you can select for example to cross refference your movie collection from www.imdb.com and supply you with the movie info and images you seek.

hope this helps,
Dam0

Yes i have my two xp computers networked, i can share media files between them , what isnt being shared is the xbmc database apparently.

I have spent many hours getting all the fanart, movie posters and info just right on the one computer but if i cant share the database to the other computer then i guess i just dont get it.

thanx for all the help

The two xbmc's will have their own databases respectively.
If you want to share the userdata folder (databases) I think you can start xbmc with a profile, then change the profile to use a different userdata folder. I've never done this so cannot confirm if it will work.

Alternatively, you can store the fanart/media info/images in the same folders as your media
ie. MyMovies/
-------MovieName/
-----------MovieName.avi
-----------MovieName-fanart.jpg
-----------MovieName.nfo

Then just add the folder all your media/movies are stored in (in this case MyMovies/) as smb shares in both xbmc's. set content-->scan for new--> done.
