View Full Version : Game FanArt - FanArt Backdrops for Games

This is a continuation of the feature suggestion thread for FanArt support in XBMC:
http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=30083

XBMC now supports FanArt for Movies, Music, TV Shows, Weather, and Plugins:
http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=FanArt

I now believe that XBMC is currently only missing support for Game FanArt, FanArt for Games. Making specific game titles enjoy the same background backdrops eye candy galore.

Example of a site that hosts FanArt for games (where you can upload/download yours!):
http://htbackdrops.com/categories.php?cat_id=2

Add your +1 here in this feature suggestion thread if you want to see this in XBMC some day.

I have also submit a new ticket on trac for this for tracking purposes, please not comment in that ticket unless you have some constructive ideas about development or want to submit a patch for it:
http://xbmc.org/trac/ticket/5683

PS! Later once XBMC gets a Games Library which support Arcade ROMS and launching third-party emulators directly (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=40715&highlight=games+library), we might want to also want to have "Arcade FanArt" in XBMC as well, separated from the normal Games FanArt, meaning for the emulators that XBMC will support launching nativly?

There are still NES, SNES, Atari, N64, etc. emulators that work under different OS's. Plus there are a handful of XB1 games that are PC games too.

+1 I'd love to see game backdrops for the emulated variety. I'd also love to see better support for Emulators!

+1 for Game FanArt

Hopefully, the Magnavox Odyssey 2 games would be part of the fanart collection.

htbackdrops.com (http://htbackdrops.com) (Home Theater Backdrops) offers FanArt backdrop hosting for Music, Weather, and Games in high quality high-definition resolutions,...

...but where it is still really lagging behind is the numbers of FanArt backdrops for Games, ...now this might not be so important to most of you today but as development have started on a games library for XBMC (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=28953) the time will soon rather than later come when you will want XBMC to automatically scrape (download) FanArt backdrops for your favorite games (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=43766), ...however as of right now there is no known site other than htbackdrops.com (http://htbackdrops.com) which offer FanArt backdrops for games, and thus far not many people have contributed to this community driven site, but if we do then this site will be primed when this feature arrives to XBMC:

http://htbackdrops.com/categories.php?cat_id=2

So please consider uploading your own backdrops of your favorite game (or musician), register an account and login then you'll find an "Upload" link in the upper right hand corner for the category you are in.

I just wish Awen hadn't disappeared for the Games Library Project (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=40715&highlight=games)Leo has picked up the thread where Awen left off, Awen is busy in his personal life atm, but has stated he will return.
So it is more important than ever to populate htbackdrops in preparation.

Already downloaded the files, just don't have time to sort out what's for what game. Hopefully this saves somebody some trouble, at least. ;)

That's great news. Leo seems very talented so I'm sure a collaboration with Awen will go a long way.

I haven't really been following the games library project, but has there been any progress? Seems like a monumental task with the different OSes, emulators, etc. I'd be content if the Games/Programs section would just recognize fanart.jpg within the directories.

Currently sorting through the fanart, and will be assisting in uploading these to HtBackdrops.

This project really interests me since my scraper library will be (externally from xbmc) supporting game scrapers more extensively(for more than just the XBox platform), if anyone is still working on the games library and extending the scraper engine to support it i'd definately like to discuss the extent to which the support is taken since i play more emulated games on my Xbox than actual Xbox Games, i'm more interested in extending this to xupport(and launch) emulated games from Xbox.

You should talk to leo2, last I knew he was doing what he could with the game library branch...

MobyGames (http://www.mobygames.com) and AllGame (http://www.allgame.com) have TONS and TONS of cover art, screenshots, descriptions and reviews for about every console and computer system there was so they should definitely have scrapers. Unfortunately MobyGames watermark their high resolution cover art (but not screenshots) and AllGame have somewhat limited resolutions on theirs, but it's a good start.

What we really need is a thetvdb.com type of site for games. :)

+1:nod: for this game fanart project.

I am not a HTPC user, yet, but I am still a XBMC/MC360 user on my xbox for a couple years now. I registered right after seeing this post. I have been hoping for something like this ever since I first saw screen shots of Aeon. My kids and I still play my xbox games along with all the old school emulators games. I would really like something like this that I can just have the xbox boot straight into the games library with all the fanart backdrops associated with each game.

Not being a programmer myself, is it difficult to have the xbmc recognize a backdrop with each game that is loaded onto the xbox's hd? I've been trying to read up on this as much as I can to fully understand what is going on. Is fanart backdrops possible to do locally without the need of a scraper?
thanks

After lurking around the forum yesterday and I decided to try out the Transparency! skin. After my initial install and setup it looks like this will be just what I was looking for. Now I just need to find/create some suitable game backdrops and look further in setting up this skin. Off the bat it worked great on my xbox

By the way thanks to all for the links posted they are a great start for backdrops.
