Is is safe to upgrade the kernel from the hardy repos?

The following packages have been kept back:
linux-image linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic linux-image-generic ntfs-3g
The following packages will be upgraded:
bsdutils grub hal-info initramfs-tools libgnutls13 libimlib2 libnm-util0
libsensors4 libssl0.9.8 libvorbis0a libvorbisenc2 libvorbisfile3
linux-libc-dev lm-sensors login mount network-manager ntpdate passwd perl
perl-base perl-modules util-linux util-linux-locales
xserver-xorg-video-geode xterm

I know i will have to recompile the nvidia drivers, but any thing else likely to break? has anyone else already tried this?

I did a dist-upgrade yesterday, everything went just fine. :)
Only inux-image-2.6.24-19-generic was kept back. Don't know why actually?

XBMCLive = syslinux isolinux bootloader
dist-upgrade = grub bootloader

Can you explain what you mean by that? I only have basic Linux-knowledge. :)

Here is a link to a little bit of info on the differences involved in converting syslinux booting to grub. That should explain a little more.
