View Full Version : broken avi's
Hi,
I've been using xbmc for years now and have frequently come accross the following problem but never found a solution.
Occasionally I FTP avi's back and forth between my PC and Xbox and have noticed that some of the avi's have drastically changed in size and either don't work at all or play partially before stopping. A typical file may be around 700mb but then after a few months I'll go to watch it and suddenly find it's file size has changed.
The new file size could be anything at all, i have a few around 10mb, some are around 100mb etc.
What is breaking my video files? Could it be something on my PC or XBMC?
I have a 750gb drive in my xbox but it has been properly formatted by 'XB partitioner'.

Welcome to the forums.
Define "properly formatted." If you can't good odds the drive wasn't.
Hi althekiller,
Many thanks for your reply. To be more specific about properly formatting:
I had previously formatted the hard drive with xbpartitioner to 32k clusters partitioning F & G into equal partitions.
However I have recently formatted the hard drive and reinstalled XBMC from scratch. This time however I have opted to use the new version of xbpartitioner that now allows for 64k clusters so that I can now give all of my available drive space to the F partition.
Prior to using this huge drive I'd had a similar problem with an 80gb drive, so i don't really think it's a problem resulting from the cluster size I just thought it was worth mentioning anyway.
Any ideas as to what is wrecking my movie files? I don't really wanna have to backup everything to dvd's to ensure their integrity.

I am no expert but i think Althekiller is on to something if your pc is formated using 32kclusters and your xbox to 64k clusters then it sounds feasable that they would see different sizes because the bigger the cluster size the more it wastes space unless your drive is over 250gb on the xbox then there is really no need to use the larger cluster size so stick with the lowest cluster size possible.
1. I didn't mention the cluster size of my pc, only the xbox
2. for a 750gb drive i have no option other than 64k clusters if i want 1 partition

It sounds to me like your drive is not formated correctly, as i have been reading up on some other forums about this and they say once you go past the 32k cluster barrier all sorts of weird things start to happen, and if your only having a f drive then it's asking for trouble.

I have the same problem. I have a 750 GB HDD and just got past 250 GB of files. Most of the new files don't work properly.
When the HDD was installed i used XBpartitioner (1.1) to format the F-drive, so the cluster size should be OK (64k).
Is there any way to check the clustersize? Can't seem to find any help with google :-)

I have been reading a lot of threads and seem to have found a solution. I read this post: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=673363&view=findpost&p=4414552
... and it worked for me to delete the F partition, split it into F & G, then delete them and finally make one big F partition which is formatted with 64k clusters.
I have copied 300 GB to the Xbox since then and everything is working perfectly.
