View Full Version : Question regarding using remote in another room
I just installed XBMC on my XP system, and I hope to get Boxee as well. I don't have a remote, but I will get one soon. I am planning on getting one of the Harmony models, but I am going to move my TV to a different room than where my PC is currently. How can I control my XBMC/Boxee PC from another room without spending a lot of money on IR extenters/repeaters? Also, can I just buy an IR receiver, or do I have to buy an MCE-compatible remote that comes w/ an IR receiver? Thanks for the advice.
im not sure about boxee,
but i believe xbmc can be setup with bluetooth capable ps3 remote, and as such should run adequately from any room in the house.

Like Dam0 says you can use a bluetooth dongle and a PS3 Remote to control XBMC. That's what I'm doing. I used the program from this post:
http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=38333
Once I configured the buttons to match the keyboard commands from the keymap.xml file everything worked great. Since it uses bluetooth you don't need line of sight like IR. You can be 30-40 feet away.
Thanks, but I don't have a PS3 (or any console); just a Windows PC.

You don't need a PS3 Console to use the PS3 remote. You just need the PS3 remote (seen here: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-PlayStation-3-Blu-ray-Disc-Remote/dp/B000M17AVO)
It will work without a PS3. Then you just need any Bluetooth USB dongle plugged in to your PC.
