Since xbmc doesn't use gpu acceleration for now, which cpu could decode 720p/1080p mkv's without any problems?
(I prefer Intel)

Thanks...

How about a cheaper cpu than the e8400?
what about the E7xxx?

E7400 can probably handle everything you throw at it. I have no experience with it though.

depends on your definition of work ok in 720 mode.

i have a pentium 4 2.4ghz intel, and it runs all my 720p mkv files fine with no visiable frame loss.

although i will say that menu screens refresh rate is dodgy at best.

i also have intel pentium 4 3.0ghz and its menu operation is faultless.

both systems are agp gfx cards(not at home atm, so cant really remember what chipsets)
