I just built a new machine tonight with stuff that I got for Christmas. I downloaded XBMC and installed in 64bit Vista Home Premium. I got the same issues as found in this thread: link (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=40398). After install when I would attempt to open XBMC, it would immediately crash. I downloaded the dll as suggested in that thread and placed it in the windows/system directory. The app doesnt immediately crash anymore, it comes up, shows the initial splash screen (XBMC) and then just sits at a black screen and does nothing else. Has anyone else experienced this issue, or can someone please try to help me get this going?

I dont know what else to try at the moment..

i am experiencing the same problem. First i tried to run xbmc in intrepid, but unfortunately the nvidia drivers would not get me a good resolution on my tv. So i gave in and installed vista 64bit, and just like the lot of you when i installed xbmc it asked me for that dll file. I downloaded the file and xbmc would just show me the splash screen and then give me a black screen with nothing on. It worked for me only when opening it in window mode, but if i tried changing the res it would go back to just displaying a black screen. I had to uninstall and reinstall like 5 times, until i finally gave up and just went back to Vista MC. I hope this gets fixed, i really like the way xbmc works on my main pc, if i can get it working on my HTPC then that would be awesome.

I didn't want an alternative to xbmc(ELISA) I want to get this working. I really like xbmc with the aeon skin. I had it running and set up perfectly on the mac mini I had plugged up to my tv, but my wife doesn't like the mac, so I'm replacing it with this new machine. I really wanna get it up and running. Does anyone have any suggestions?

i have used elisa and is not bad, but it still is very limited to the options they have. I also have it installed on my main pc, since this isnt only my main pc but is where i usually test all kinds of software. I must say tho, Elisa is looking very promising, i have been "using" it for quite a while, until i tried xbmc. It works so perfect on my main pc that i thought it would be the same on my HTPC. But it let me down, i really dont like the fact that i have to use windows to get a good res on my tv first of all, and second it sucks that it won't work under windows.

jdfwarrior,

I have tested XBMC on various OS's and managed to get them working, right now I'm testing out Vista x64 Ultimate, and I was able to get XBMC working. The only problem I had was the thumbs, but I downloaded the .dll files and managed to get it working with now problems. Right now I am using one of the SVN builds from Jester. I couldn't tell you off the top of my head which one it is because the last couple of days they have been changing so many things. But why don't you give one of those builds a go and see how it works for you.

Also, ikons is building on Vista SP1 from a clean linux build. I would also try that as well. I hope that helps a little or at least gives you some direction.

Well others are saying they have the same issue so obviously I'm not crazy. Ive had it working on my 64bit Vista Business install on my primary desktop at home. Could it possibly be due to lack of a codec or something else software related with Vista Home Premium? Any ideas anyone?

Where would I find the SVN builds from Jester so that I could try that? I have tried the newest Atlantis release, as well as beta 2, which is what I had running on my desktop. They both do the same thing. I did get the main menu to show up VERY briefly one time with the beta 2 install, but when it opened, for some reason it opened in the background and had another window on top, in focus. When I clicked that window to get it out of the way, XBMC died. It returned to a black screen and crashes instantly showing only a black screen every time I try to open it.

Any one have any suggestions?

I don't doubt that your having a problem, try here for Jester's Builds. (http://ocs.nl/xbmc/) I don't have a copy of Vista Premium x64 so I can't test that version, but I have Ultimate x64 and I really didn't do anything different on it. All I have on it is SP1, I don't have any codecs installed on it. I did have to install the .dll's but that was because my thumbs weren't showing up, and I put those dll's in the system32 folder, and haven't had a problem since.

I can't remember anything else I did differently. I'll look at my pc again tomorrow to see if I have any other thing installed.
