View Full Version : Bad video quality
I'm new to XBMC, but I've been using gbpvr for a couple of years now.
I think xbmc has great promise. The GUI looks good, the control is good, features are excellent (I love the cover-art download features and IMDB connection). It took awhile to set up the remote but even that is fine now.
One problem. Big problem. The video quality is crap. Gbpvr is using ffdshow,
and I never had any issue with video quality. With xbmc, everything is darker and murky. Playing with brightness/contrast fixes the darkness, but then everything is seen as if through fog.
I'd appreciate hints to fixing that.
Thanks,
Dan

The video quality in xbmc is not as you say Crap it's the best i have used in years and
that includes dedicated dvd players from the likes of sony panasonic philips etc.
If it it looks too dark then change the colour settings in either xbmc or use a profile on your monitor. how hard can that be? and just maybe your hardware is not up to the job:rolleyes:
Yeah have you maybe set up a crazy gamma ramp for OpenGL apps?
and just maybe your hardware is not up to the job:rolleyes:Yeah, considering he mentions that using ffdshow everything is good, this is a really sound option. Not.
What about answering when you have something useful to suggest?

Have you got anything decent to suggest? i think not:(

Extremely hard - for one who does not know what you're talking about.
Care to explain?

If you think the video quality is the best you have used i think you need your eyes tested. I have been putting off a post about this topic as i have the same issue. Now dont get me wrong xbmc is the best htpc frontend to date i have tired most and stuck with meedio for about 3 years but have just moved all my htpc's ( 3 off them) to xbmc. Video play back is grainy and doesnt resize all my files. I have a 42in lcd 1080p 100mkz LG tv nvida 7900gt dvi to hdmi which runs at 1920x1080 60mhz and have now after about 2 weeks of playing with setting got it looking better but dvd playback is NO way near as good as say my xbox 360. If i install say power dvd 8 would xbmc use that instead of ffdshow setup. Again this is not a complaint xbmc just works which is what we need.Would video guality be better on the linux version?

The problem with the grain is down to the source material and the fact that you and others are then upsampling that picture to huge massive screens and so it's going to look even more grainy than the original.:)
Ps my eysight is perfect is yours:laugh:

Same dvd movie on my xbox 360 looks perfect on my hdtv but when played through xbmc it was grainy and washed out i have got it a bit better but still not perfect and reading through a few posts i am not the only one with this issue. I have tried ati and nvida and changed rez on pc but is the same but changing setting on my tv helped.
Have you got anything decent to suggest? i think not:(Yes, basically I would suggest to XBMC users to not be aggresive with people that are having problems with the software.
And addressing somebody else's problem with "maybe your hardware is not up to the task" is, IMO, really aggressive.
Even more so when developers are freely admitting that video playback on XBMC still has a lot of ground to cover before being considered "finished".

The video quality in xbmc is not as you say Crap it's the best i have used in years...
You must not have much of an eye for video quality then, because XBMC is definitely below average in this regard. That's not a slam against XBMC as it's still in it's infancy, but it is indeed the truth. If you look around, there are other posts talking about this very issue.

How can you say it's the source material without even knowing what his source material is??? and you must be watching stuff on a 20" screen if you think a 42" is a "huge massive screen".
I agree with ashlar that you are being pretty aggressive in this thread. I would also add that you're being condescending. You act like you're taking these video quality issues personally. If you're a blind fanboy, that's fine. Just don't expect the rest of us to drink the same Kool-Aid. XBMC is an awesome piece of software that is still very new (especially outside the Xbox platform) and will undoubtedly get better in every aspect. But right now video quality, while passable, is most definitely not it's strong point.

Is the quality any better on linux or the live version.

I think the problem for the guys who complain is that XBMC's is due to the fact that XBMC's DVDPlayer (the video player in XBMC for Linux/Mac/Windows) does not currently offer any video postprocessing features (so today if the source video is crap then XBMC will currently display crap), ...postprocessing is however something which FFDshow does and it help hide issues with crappy source videos (so with postprocessing crap in does not necessary mean crap out, or it at least not perceived so visually by the majority of users). Like gamester17 states Basically crap in crap out . which is like i said poor source material
Ie DVD it's not good enough for HD tv as the resolution is too low.
As for being agressive with you guys, then i aint even started being aggressive but i won't waste my time on losers like yourself and ashlar:)

It has nothing to do with what type of format as i said a DVD will look great playing through my xbox 360 but when played through my HTPc it is grainy no matter what i do. Refresh rate can be changed now which is great and xbmc will get better and better i was just pointing out a issue NOT complaining.Just because you dont have this issue doesnt mean others dont and from what i have read on this forum a lot of peaple have similar issues with video playback be it frame rate issues or the way it looks. And putting a smiley face after calling me a loser doesnt make it funny you twat.

Regarding the crap in-crap out theory: no doubt about that but postprocessing is a solution to the problem. Also, good bitrate DVDs are NOT crappy Xvids off the net.
There's a whole industry of high quality video processors (Lumagen, Crystalio, DVDO, ecc.), there's a (currently) 2.562 posts thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=719041) on AVS Forum entirely dedicated to postprocessing with an HTPC. All this won't be negated by your arrogance.
Welcome to my ignore list.
