Hi I am long time XBox1 XBMC user and love it. Now I am looking for something just as good as XBMC that can play/stream 720/1080 HD files. Xbox 1 cannot do it due to hardware restrictions. I was wondering if I were to get apple TV and run XBMC on it...is it just as compatible as XBMC on XBox and can it play 720 or 1080p resolution videos? Thanks for your help.

Forget 1080p, needs more CPU than the AppleTV has (right now). Some 720p is also encoded at profiles/rates that are too high for the AppleTV to handle.

Just as compatible = Yes if not more (you have the whole itunes side and video rental etc)

Yes.

I only tested for a day, and then plugged it in as I have my TV area wired for my 360.

Opps forgot to mention this issue. Kind of a bummer but this is still a very young piece of software.

I have a 720p TV and all I really need is 720p playback....so it seems like Apple TV with XBMC will do everything I need it to do now that XBox can't play HD content. Thinking about getting it. Before I put forth the cash...just wanted to ask once....Does XBMC work with all versions of Apple TV. I have seen alot of threads of ppl reverting back to version 2.1 or 2.2. Is that because those are the only versions that are compatible with XBMC.

Lastly with XBMC and apple TV can I play all or most x264 720p files avaliable online...or is it still hit/miss or choppy playback? Thanks for all your help everyone.

It works on 2.02, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 (only 2.2 and 2.3 has contextual menu). People was downgrading because XBMC needs to be fix to work with new OS releases, and same people that has done early updates don't have patience to wait a few days in order to XBMC to be uptade.

ATV should play x264 at 24 fps up to 6000 kbps Bitrate without chopping.

Completely depends on your RF environment.

I'd say keep your encodes Main Profile (up to Level 3.1) with B-Frames as well.
