View Full Version : Anyone using HDMI to a CRT? (i.e. Sony XBR-960)

Hello all,

I'm currently working on replacing our aging, but much loved, XBOX with a new HTPC that can handle HD content a bit better. Our main display is currently a Sony XBR-960, which is a beautiful display, but obviously not an LCD with a defined native resolution.

Has anyone used an board with HDMI out to a CRT similar to this and had good results? I'm definitely not upgrading the set any time soon as it gives us a beautiful picture compared to just about any LCD I've seen. If HDMI out of an HTPC won't work well then it just may be a while before upgrading the ol' Box.

Not really sure this solves my problem. Are you suggesting going from s-video to scart to component? The whole purpose of the new rig is for HD content. Seems like a step backward if I'm not using HDMI...

Does your TV have a component input? If so just buy a decent graphics card or motherboard with an HDMI out and then buy an HDMI to component adaptor.

Buy a video card with a DVI connector (most these days) and use a DVI to HDMI cable, I have never tried it but I don't see why it wouldn't work on a CRT

For the cost you can buy it and test it out, I picked up such a cable on ebay for £3.50 delivered the other day!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't HDMI an all digital signal while component is analog? Seems like it would need to be some sort of converter box that takes the digital signal and converts to the analog component. I've got the HDMI input on the XBR960, but have never used it. I'm really looking for someone who has already used HDMI from an HTPC to a CRT set like this.

Most of the motherboards that I'm looking at already have HDMI built in and are being aimed at HTPC builders so no need for an adapter.

i have a Hitachi CRT HD with HDMI input.
it looks amazing. nothing reproduces black levels like the old HD CRTs.
i run it from an older 7800GT at the moment but will be changing to MB with on-board GPU, there is really no need for HTPC to have a dedicated PCI-e video card.

Thanks much. That's exactly what I'm looking for. I may see if I can drag one of my systems downstairs to test it out just to be safe, but I am more encouraged now.
