Good Evening All. I am presently using XBMCLive on my usb, but my question is more geared to Linux Networking. I have a mixed environment. I have XP, Vista, Ubuntu 8.10, and XBMC, which is based on Ubuntu 8.04.

I have a 750 gig hard drive, sda1, and Live installed on my usb, sdb1. Now when I transfer files to sda1, from my windows pc's via ssh, the speed is pretty decent. But trying to transfer files from Ubuntu 8.10 to 8.04 is horrible. 170mb file took damn near 15 minutes. I figured that I could share the a folder on sda1, and mount it on my laptop, and I transfer files quickly. In theory that sounds good, but the reality is that I'm a n00b to Linux, and posting questions on the Ubuntu forum doesn't help because there is too much activity there. I have read about NFS, and I tried that route, and was able to finally mount the folder but again painful transfer.

So, if anyone with Linux knowledge could help me I would be greatly appreciated. I want to make the switch to Linux, but I have to admit it's a lot more complex than I thought it would be.

Why not use FTP?

Well I did try that but transferring files was horrible, mind you the files where less than 100 megs.

There's some wifi in there somewhere I presume? If you want pain free file transfers, plug it in, wireless is useless for high traffic applications. On the other hand, it this is all over a wired network, there is surely a hardware/driver problem or some other app is amok.

are you wanting to setup a file server?

Thanks, I am running it over wifi, I had it wired and of course it was great, but the problem is I can't have a long ass cable running down the hallway through the livingroom. I suppose what I will do is just transfer large files via usb then. I thought of doing a file server but the truth is that this box would only be running XBMC and occasionally I would browse the internet to download my Anime. So, honestly I think a wireless connection would work just for that.

What's the name of the Wifi cards you use?, might be a driver issue

No, wifi is _SHIT_ for file transfers. There are just too many devices that operate on the same frequencies. Just because you have a strong signal doesn't mean you're going to get reliable data transfers (you won't). For instance, I have a particularly strong even though it must pass through 2 floors and a wall. Though the connection is rated for 6+MB/s the actual throughput has never been about 2MB/s. It is well worth your time to dig through the attic/basement/crawl space/etc or con the wife into buying a couple rugs to wire it up.

The OP obviously wants to transfer some small files not blu ray ISOs, but i know what you mean i personally never use Wifi if i dont have too.

170MB in 15m isn't small enough.

I agree gentlemen hard wire would be the way to go, but honestly running cable isn't an option for me, at least not right now. I will have to just deal with the wifi for simple stuff for now. I will just have to transfer large files via thumbdrive. No big deal for now.
