View Full Version : [LINUX] Nvidia 9300 Audio over HDMI?
Does anyone have audio working over HDMI in linux? I bought the MSI P7NGM and am just getting started. I know people are successfully running audio over hdmi on windows boxes but i would like to attempt this in Linux. Its probably over my head but ive got nothing better to do today so might as well attempt it.

Haven't had the time to examine the possibilities myself. Right now im running my media setup on Vista64Bit, installed MPC-HC and I can output video/audio through my HDMI. Audio is sent via LPCM. Everything works flawless. Hardware acceleration, DXVA, is not that important to me, but the LPCM feature is a necessity.
I'd like to replace this setup to Ubuntu + XBMC, is it possible at this moment?

It works with ati - for sure - and is supposed to work on nvidia, too, but I never got it running. But in Linux you get all sorts of other problems - with ati you got underscan and the fix for it isn't really that great since it breaks x11 on restart. With nvidia, at least I, had an issue that made ALL sound disappear - even from a separate soundblaster card - when installing the nvidia-drivers (all kind of versions). And then there's the x264 decoding that seems kind of broken running Ubuntu. Phew. Hold out for a new mac mini, since the only operating system that runs xbmc flawlessly is macos x. Yes, I have tried windows, linux and mac os.

Does someone succeeded to have audio over HDMI with this board ?
All checks/config I done are ok but still no sound.
I read elsewhere in old posts that sound will never work.
Is it true ?

I spend a lot of time getting HDMI audio working with my Asus M3N78-EM and Ubuntu 9.04. I posted this on the ubuntuforums.org earlier this week.
Here's what works for me...
1. Use Alsa 1.0.19. There are other threads on how to upgrade ALSA, but here's something real quick. If my instructions don't work, I suggest finding a method that uses built debian packages and module-assistant. Anything that mentions /usr/local will probably cause you problems later on. I uploaded the alsa source packages to my ppa, https://launchpad.net/~kachristmas/+archive/ppa, who knows if it will build. If it does, install all the alsa packages, including alsa-source. Then run
m-a -f --text-mode auto-install alsa-source
2. Reboot.
3. Use aplay -Lto find the name of the HDMI output. My output looked like hdmi:CARD=NVidia
HDA NVidia, NVIDIA HDMI
HDMI Audio Output
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
4. Again, use output from aplay -L to create /etc/asound.conf. My two line /etc/asound.conf looks like this: pcm.!default hdmi:NVidia
pcm.iec958 hdmi:NVidia
5. Reboot.
The newer version, 0.9.15, of pulseaudio handles passthrough audio a lot better than the version found in ubuntu 9.04. You can find that in my ppa as well. However, it's probably a good idea to completely disable pulseaudio until you get something working first.

None of these problems at all on Linux or Windows with this, try to adjust your settings or ask for help in a new thread.
Actually for my setup audio over hdmi was a peace of cake in Jaunty.
I got onboard sound on my mainboard. Connected the spdif i/o connector from the mainboard to my Nvidia 9400GT input. Enabled digital sound in alsamixer, and that's it. I got sound over hdmi directly to my Panasonic Plasma plus digital sound via the digital output from my motherboard to my dolby surround receiver.
No extra packages or config needed on my end.
Edit: of course I am running the latest Nvidia beta drivers for my 9400gt.

I connected an old harddrive, installed windows XP, XBMC and it works !
I have sound over hdmi.
So I ordered a 750G drive and will install XP :blush:

have you tried posting your question on www.ubuntuforums.org, because this question is more related to the operating system itself than XBMC? A lot of knowledge there and the developers themself are also very active on the forums.
I tried for a week to get sound in XBMC over HDMI and I could never get it to fly...ended up with XP SP3
