Hi,

I'm trying to set up my HTPC using a CF card and an IDE adapter like this (http://www.digitalera.co.uk/products/CF_to_IDE_adapter_HDD-657-53.html):

The adapter just fits on to the end of the IDE cable and presents the flash card to the system as a standard IDE hard disk.

The trouble is, Ubuntu won't install. I'm trying to work it out on the Ubuntu boards (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=983956), but so far no joy.

I know this is off-topic, but I wondered if anyone here had installed Ubuntu (or any Linux distro) on a CF card?

I have also successfully booted Ubuntu and XBMC live off of a compact flash.

I did initially have some trouble booting, and I believe that it was related to the voltage setting on the CF adapter (not 100% sure on this though).

I should also mention that not all CF cards are created equal... some are bootable, while others are not.

For what its worth, I'm using an 300x 8GB Transcend CF card.

You may have to edit syslinux.cfg to say boot=disk rather than boot=usb. I have mine installed on a sata drive and had to change that. Also make sure the bootable flag is set on the cf.

Thanks all - I was beginning to wonder if it was possible.

I'll keep fiddling.
