http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/

Download and unzip. Enclosed are a two batch files with associated disk images that are 7-zipped (http://7-zip.org) and a set of tools.

These batch file can be used to create AppleTV patchstick disk images.

The minimum USB flash drive supported is 256MB.

USB flash drives can be restored back to full size using the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool from here -> http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197

Also note that it can not still have U3 software on it (so uninstall that first if you have U3 USB flash memory drive) (http://www.u3.com/uninstall/default.aspx).

There are two disk image versions:

mk-atv-xbmc.bat will create a disk image that will install

1) bintuils
2) SoftwareMenu-0.71
3) XBMCLauncher-0.6

Use this version if you already have ssh on your AppleTV that
was installed by a previous patchstick.

mk-atv-xbmc-ssh.bat will create a disk image that will install

1) ssh
2) bintuils
3) SoftwareMenu-0.71
4) XBMCLauncher-0.6

SoftwareMenu can be used to install other AppleTV Plugins.

XBMCLauncher is used to install and launch either XBMC or Boxee.

These batch files should be run from a command prompt.

Start -> Run -> cmd

Run either batch file and it will download, extract and inject boot.efi
into the disk image. Everything will be automatically done so you don't
need to manually extract or download anything.

Once the disk image is created, use "USB Image Tool" to do the actual
copy to USB flash drive. Run "USB Image Tool", switch from "Volume Mode"
to "Device Mode". Select your USB flash drive then select the disk image
using the "Restore" button. This tool does work in Vista but will need to
be run as administrator. To do this right-click on "USB Image Tool.exe"
then select "run as administrator".

Good Luck, Issues can be posted here;

http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/issues/list

Please be complete in describing any problems as we cannot see what has
been done.

Enjoy and please be careful selecting the desired USB flash drive :)

Confirmed working on MCE XP/SP3 (Pro) with an ATV factory restore and Apple update.
Small typo in the readme:
"mk_atv-xbmc.bat will create a disk image that will install"
And:
"mk_atv-xbmc-ssh.bat will create a disk image that will install"

Should be mk-atv-xbmc...etc

Other than that, it's working flawlessly and gave me a chance to use Windows ;)

Thanks Davilla, appreciated.

And we have a winner on WinXP, the first to post any information (yes/no) :) Thanks for trying it, it's always pins and needles until I get some feed back.

The typo was a late name change, the "-" is easer to type than "_" as no shift key is involved. Changed in source origin but I won't update the download unless there is some problem.

I must chime in on the negative side.
Tried this on 2 different systems so far with 3 different USB sticks.
Everything works fine until I attempt to restore the img file back to a USB stick. The Restore progress bar only gets to 2 bars each time, then it stops and the program resets as if it had just been launched.

Suggestions ?

******* EDIT *******

No idea why ... but the GUI approach did not cooperate completely .. but the command line version of USB Image Tool did.
I retract and now state that my Windows USB stick is good and a nuke 'n pave on my ATV 2.2 is now running XBMC Atlantis due to the new Windows USB stick :)

Slippy, you might want to look at this thread - http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=38870 - it lists all known working and non-working USB sticks.

You did select "Device Mode", correct?

"command line version of USB Image Tool did", funny I could never get the comand-line version to list the devices, WinXP, sp2 on Parallels

Yep, yep .. Device mode was selected and used for the GUI. Even tried Volume mode (even though I knew it would nuke the bootable ability) just to see if I could get an image on the USB stick OK.

Attempted the GUI approach on XP Pro SP3 32-bit and XP Pro SP2 64-bit.
When the command line app worked on x64, I kissed the ground and stopped the experiments there .. it was kinda late and I wanted to get the ATV back up 'n running.

As for "usbitcmd.exe l", it worked fine for me indicating my USB stick was device # 2468 and away I went

Many thanks again for the Windows approach ... I was holding onto my old iBook G3 Clamshell just for ATV USB creation. So the iBook can finally be put out to pasture.

That's odd, all 7z is doing is un-compressing atv-xbmc.7z to atv-xbmc.img

if you edit the bat file, you can see exactly what it's doing.

Would I lose Couch Surfer, NitoTV etc?

Hey Slippy,
I cannot offer complete feedback for you, but I can say that the Windows patchstick installs SoftwareMenu and that SoftwareMenu offers the installation of ATVFiles, NitoTV, etc. So yes ... the Windows patchstick seems to currently offer a little more that the Apple batchstick b7. That said, I have not tried installing any of the extra goodies - although I have used it to hide some of the Apple factory installed menu items

I just ran the "with ssh" version of the patchstick on a brand new apple tv with 2.1 os. It looks like it successfully installed the xbmc/boxee launcher. I updated both, and installed CouchSurfer and Nito. the problem is, when I sftp (using WinSCP), I am not able to edit/delete any files. I am working towards unlocking the USB to use a keyboard and mouse, but cannot replace my mach_kernel.prelink file. Is there a setting I missed or something?

Still unable to edit files though, and I can't replace my mach_kernel.prelink.

can you be more specfic about why you can't, and as a note, you can't replace files that are owned by root using sftp. You can to two step it, sftp into /Users/frontrow, then ssh in and "sudo mv" them.

vancurenw

sftp'ing the new mach_kernel.prelink, then using sudo mv worked perfectly. That was the only problem I was having. I did not know that you could not overwrite files in the root directory. Thanks!

Patched fine and everything was going to plan until I tried to install ATV Files, got stuck in the boot loop and had to start over from factory restore. Seems an update is required before things are good for 2.3.

Thanks Davilla, I can SSH at leat and hopefully everything will be sorted for 2.3 soon

How do we turn the thumb drive into a normal drive again? I tried to right click on it in windows and select format, but it says the drive is 19.5k, so I didn't do it.

Edit: I should probably clarify. I made it into a patch stick, this was on a mac though, and now want to turn it back into a normal thumb drive.

I'm a newb and having what I think are issues. I have created the thumb drive, loaded it onto the ATV and now see the options for Boxee and for XBMC. When I go to select one of them, the screen goes black and seems to do nothing. I can hit menu to get back out of the black screen and to the main menu, but nothing has changed. Is this the point that it is supposed to download the actual XBMC or is this it? Confused...Thanks for any help in advance.

That happens to me if I have 2.3 loaded on the atv. If I use the patchstick on 2.2 it works as it should. Perhaps if the patchstick installed a loader higher than 0.8? Then again I really dont know what I'm talking about :)

For some reason .8 will not successfully launch XBMC. You get the black screen. Just use Launcher 2.2 . It works on my ATV 2.3 .

For those of you using the USB Image Tool, and experiencing a crash after two bars...

I had this same issue, then found a post on the opensource forum. It turns out that the process was a success, despite the crashing of the tool.

Give that USB a try, boot to it just like advised. If it was not a success, it shouldn't be bootable (and you shouldn't do any harm). Remember, you won't see anything on the drive, it's not an NTFS formatted disk any longer.

So your solution is simply to ignore the crash, in simplest terms. Worked for me, and I tested twice to be sure, before posting this.

process created a boot disk (YAY) it works enough to get to the "starting Linux" prompt. Stays there for a good bit of time (over 5 minutes). Not really sure if this is normal or not. Just wanted to get some feedback before I either leave this running for longer, or try to reimage the USB drive.

edit: Left the drive running for 30 minutes at a time pre and post apple software update. The boot stops on "starting Linux..." (exact number of ellipses).

There are no error messages proceeding this.

Any suggestions, or should I just go ahead, clear the drive and try again?

Davilla - I have been following the Readme file closely.

this is the section I'm hung at:

Run either batch file and it will download, extract and inject boot.efi
into the disk image. Everything will be automatically done so you don't
need to manually extract or download anything.

Once the disk image is created, use "USB Image Tool" to do the actual
copy to USB flash drive. Run "USB Image Tool", switch from "Volume Mode"
to "Device Mode". Select your USB flash drive then select the disk image
using the "Restore" button. This tool does work in Vista but will need to
be run as administrator. To do this right-click on "USB Image Tool.exe"
then select "run as administrator".

I ran the mk-atv-xbmc-ssh.bat in cmd and everything seemed to go just fine. so then got to the USB Image Tool section and (having now tried three diff brands of sticks) follow the instructions of switching to device mode, selecting the right drive and then hitting restore - it asks me to copy the image file. there are no image files to select - so i try to "restore" the boot.inf mentioned above. Is the 2Z694-5499.DMG file what I need to put on the USB drive? I see on the web that DMG this is the new MAC extension for image files.

Well - just tried that and it failed - could not write to the USB device (error 87). its a usb stick listed in the XBMC pages as compatible (Sandisk cruzer micro 512MB)

Any suggestions. Did the step preceeding this in the cmd prompt not go as expected or am I doing something wrong in using the USB Image Tool?

Many thanks - really, trying to follow the instructions to a T.

note - in doing this i just realized that this must be the file I am looking for: atv-xbmc-ssh.img? It does not show up in my windows browser...huh, the image tool worked when i typed the file name in directly...i have an atv-xbmc-ssh.zip but not a img. But its obviously there and now on my USB device.

ok - so past this hurdle (really, thank you for the patience) and successfully got it on the the ATV just now. Rebooted the ATV and see the Boxee/XBMC menu in the ATV. went to update to the latest launcher (per this post you made http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=45676&highlight=Launcher+2.3) but nothing happened. Blank screen for a bit then just returned to the update screen..none of the updates are happening. I tried to just run XBMC for the heck of it and got the blank screen others mentioned with 2.3.

Did I run the Launcher update from the incorrect place (am i thinking of the wrong thing?)

thank you.

Hi,

I did some research, got a ATV yesterday, ran the batch file on my USB stick (on windows) and then proceeded to patch my ATV.

Everything worked perfect 1st time. I then used the updated ATV menu (as per instructions) to download XBMC and proceeded to set that up via the xbmc settings menu (screen res etc etc).

After that, I SSH'ed into the ATV and modified the xbmc sources to match what I was using on my old xbox (running xbmc) and all was good.

This fixed the issue of the ATC xbmc not remembering the passwords to the lan shares (I was prompted each time I restarted it for the share l/p. So hard coding it into the sources.xml file fixed this.

I do have 4 questions however & please excuse me if this has been asked before.

1. Is it possible to get the tos-link optical audio to work in Dolby Digital 5.1, rather than the standard DTS which it seems locked to?

2. Has anyone got a USB TV Tuner stick working on the ATV (and then with xbmc)? If so, what brand and any instructions would be most helpful.

3. Is it possible to modify the ATV menu so it says XBMC, rahther than XBMC/BoxEE. I have no intention of running BoxEE

4. Is it possible to have the XBMC "shutdown" actually shutdown the whole ATV, so you don't have to 'double menu' out of the ATV to turn it off?

I appreciate any feedback/questions etc & am more than happy to provide help with people who are stuck.

Since you are past the point of the thread topic, it's best to create an new thread and not hi-jack an exisiting thread with an unrelated topic. This does nothing but cause confusion when others read the thread. Post a new thread please. Thanks.

Okkaaaay... I'm getting pretty furious soon! Been trying to install this XBMC, first with the b08, didn't work because of the 2.3x issue i reád in the forum.

Then i tried with the b11, installes like a charm (Ubar thanks for this release) but now is it i get confused, been trying to read up on it all... but what with the Launcher 0.9/2.3? Don't make any sence to me, are there some threads I should read? Found the one where they released the fucker... 0.9, didn't get much out of it.

When it all comes to an end, i start my Apple TV, and i get this message "Error: Cannot launch XBMC/Boxee from path: /Applications/boxee.app/Contents/MacOS/Boxee"

Does the same thing with XBMC... My Trip is gone, for going WUUUHUU about this release... so i beg for help :P

Launcher 0.8 (installed by atvusb-creator/atv-win) has problems under appletv os 2.3+.

Launcher 2.3 was created to fix these problem by using something called multifinder.

Launcher 0.9 is a fix to Launcher 0.8 issues under appletv os 2.3+.

You have two choices for operation under appletv os 2.3+. Use Launcher 0.9 or Launcher 2.3.

Launcher 0.8 can update to Launcher 2.3. Once at Launcher 2.3, you can then update to Launcher 0.9 if you don't like how multifinder works.

i start my Apple TV, and i get this message "Error: Cannot launch XBMC/Boxee from path: /Applications/boxee.app/Contents/MacOS/Boxee"

Not possible unless you are running Launcher 2.3 and have enabled direct boot into boxee.

If this error message is in response to selecting the right side menu entry labeled "Boxee", then you most likely did NOT install boxee from the downloads/updates menu (also on the right side menus).

atvusb-creator creates a patchstick.
Patchstick installs the Launcher.
Launcher installs XBMC or Boxee.

I downloaded the .zip file to open on my pc. When it's opened, I don't recognize any of the files. I have watched some step by step videos on Youtube but it's for mac users. Does anyone have a step by step list on how to make the patchstick with this new creator?

Another question. If I were to use the mac usb creator on a friends mac, then install it on my apple tv, would XBMC and boxee be able to "see" my pc and use read my films, movies and music ? Or is the window patchstick my only hope ?

I'm sorry if I sound so stupid, i'm trying really hard to understand and make xbmc work on my apple tv.

Thanks guys???

Heya There,

I need some help trouble shooting a virgin xmbc install

Using Windows lastest - atv-win-1.0.b11
On a new appleTV running v2.3 out of the box. (I've tried both 2.3 and 2.3.1)
I create the patchstick without any problems. (run the .bat, it downloads the .dmg from apple, I run the USB creater and no problems occur)
I can't look at the patchstick but I'm on windows and so assume that the file system isn't recognized as it's OSX on the patchstick.

now the problem.
When I boot with the patchstick…Linux boots and a bunch of stuff scrolls by until
Mount: cannot umount /mnt/rootfs: Invalid command.
??-boot-patchstick failed -- starting telnetd
And then getting the lease fails. (I only have encrypted wifi with so guessing that’s the problem there.)

I reboot the appletv and it's just the appletv.

I've looked around on the forums but don't see anything helpful.

This is my 1st install so can't really tell where the problems are starting..

Has this been seen before? Any pointers?

Thx

Okay folks. I downloaded atv-win-1.0.b08 and pactched and successfully loaded xbmc/boxee on my new atv. screen went black when I tried to update boxee and xbmc. I read some posts and got myself atv-win-1.0.b11.

It all worked perfectly but yet again I wasn't able to update at all. These were the updates available :

xbmc atlantis (bf1)
boxee alpha 0.9.7.48
boxee (0.9.9.5324
launcher 2.3

Not of these updates work. They all go blackscreen when I choose them. Did I forget to add something to my patchstick ?

atv-xbmc-ssh.img is all that I put on it.:sniffle:

Sorry, from what I see I have .06 and in the 3rd party plugins it says I can update to .09. It doesn't work. When I try to update it tells me to go to SCRIPTS and to select FIXPERM. When I go into scripts, the white apple logo appears twice and then it boots me back to the main ATV screen.

In 3rd party plugins btw, I cannnot update anything at all. I can't even dl couchsurfer.

I'm sorry i'm such a pain in the ***.

I noticed that in the bat files as well but it's only in the comments section. Is this just a typo or do I actually need to use the one without the ssh to get the 0.8 launcher?

IT Geek, but Patchstick newbie here!

Created by following instructions here: Using: atv-win-1.0.b11
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/comments.php?enid=3102&laid=33#commentsanchor

Stick: 1GB Cruzer
ATV: Updated with current firmware, but not wiped.

Created patchstick ok,..powered ATV off, stick in, and booted. Tux logo appears and patching seems to run okay, but then stops at a login. Cuts off to the left side of the screen (Pioneer 50"), but can make out what looks to be "UNTU Login:___"and flashing curser. After a little while the screen goes black and then nothing. Left it for hrs last night after trying a second time and the same.

Booted up the ATV and nothing has changed,..clearly the update hasen't gone through.

Does the ATV need to be wiped first?
Does it matter that I used Vista and not XP? The stick seemed to create just fine.

Cheers

Hello,

I just upgraded atv to 2.4 then I recreated the patchstick via "atv-win-1.0.b8.zip" as described at http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=40446

The patch was fine but the embedded launcher is too old and refuse to update itself to 3.0/3.1. In order to overcome this I had to manually download latest launcher (3.1), push it to atv and execute it. :(

May I suggest to update the "atv-win-1.0.b8.zip" to embedded more recent launcher ? :)

Thx!

Hello folks, I've got myself in quite the pickle. I haven't used my ATV in about a month and when I turned it on the other day, it asked me if I wanted to update and by accident I did.

It erased everything including boxee and xbmc. I tried to remember how I created a patchstick and found my atv-win-1.0.b11 folder. I tried to use the USB tool to copy either mk-atv-xbmc-ssh.bat or atv-xbmc-ssh.7z I couldn't remember which one but I tried both. I switched from volume to device mode and hit the restore button but they never copied to the patchstick no matter what. What am I doing wrong ?

I know I'm a noob at this, but I thought I would have at least gotten past the zip extract seamlessly.

I have downloaded the Windows zipped file from the site listed in the first thread of this topic. The zipped
folder I downloaded is titled atv-win-1.0.b11. When I open and click on
extract, it tells me there are files already in there that have the same
name. In the zipped folder, there are two folders, one is _MACOSX, and the
other is atv-win.1.0.b11. These have the folder icon and seem to have
stuff in them. In addition, there are two other documents in there with
the same names as above...which I think is causing the problem. It
states "There is already a file name with the folder name you specified.
Specify a different name." When I look into the folders, this seems to be occurring with all documents, where there is a duplicate, empty folder in addition to the folder with "stuff."

I have not even been able to get to the extract step yet, so this is the way it was
downloaded. How do I remedy this? Do I delete those two documents (they
actually seem to be empty folders, but have the document icon)? I have unzipped many things before, and never run into this. Thanks.

When I open and click on
extract, it tells me there are files already in there that have the same
name.
It depends on your unzip tool, but for WinZip (for example) you need to have the "Use folder names" option ticked. This will create the different subfolders that hold the like-named files. Start by extracting to a drive letter and simple path (C:\temp\ or D:\temp\).

Thanks! I tried the extract on my XP based laptop and it worked fine. I had been trying it on a Vista computer, so who knows what the issue was. Thanks for the advice.

I have finished with a GUI version of davilla popular atvusb-creator. This program has everything you need in order to create a patchstick for your Apple TV with a point & click interface

Currently I've asked davilla to test out the program for me and to make sure it's on par with his standards before i release it to the public. It shouldn't take that long as i have tested it a lot and it seems to be solid.. even though i've only worked on it for about a week.

Anyways, here are some screen shots of the program running from start to finish

Hi, This looks like a very handy aplication.
I've tried to use it but i constantly get an error notification. Sometimes (almost) at the end of the procedure, other times at the beginning.

I've tried quite some USB-sticks. A lot of them won't work at all, if i select them the application instantly stops.

Does anyone have any suggenstions for me?
I'm running windows XP and want to install Boxee on my new Apple TV.

Thanks

Sorry for my delay Kickback. I've started my last semester and its pretty time consuming!

I appreciate you taking the time to use my program but I noticed that davilla made his own version for windows so I guess so ahead and just use that. I'll be taking down my google page and the program.

Thanks to those who have used my version and enjoyed it! :)

I just made a patchstick using atv-win 2.0 but when I run the patchstick on the atv it says unable to unmonunt /mnt/rootfs: invalid argument
patchstick failed -- starting telnetd
something v1.9.1) started
discover...
discover...
discover...
failing
Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr
<more stuff>

Link encap:Local Loopback
<more suff>
Then it does nothing. Anyone got any suggestions?
Edit: Now my apple tv won't even boot...whoops. Also, this thumb drive is the same one I used in the past. I was using a different laptop back then to make the patchstick. I'm on my new Dell with XP SP3 is that makes any difference.

The part before this was the important part. What did it report?

unable to unmonunt /mnt/rootfs: invalid argument
patchstick failed -- starting telnetd

Humm, I would say to try another brand flash drive. You say you have used this one before? With what patchstick?

Also that you ATV will not boot now, very strange as the patchstick failed before it could start doing anything.

I can't remember which version. I know it worked on the very first windows version you made. I believe I even used it on the first, or very early, version on mac. I've used it on 3 different version though I believe.

The only thing I did before I tried the patchstick was upgrade to 2.4. it rebooted and worked fine. I tried two other sticks. One wouldn't boot and the other I get the same thing.

Could the apple tv hard drive be dead? When I was plugging the power back in after plugging the patchstick in the power connector kind of sparked. That wasn't real comforting, lol. Maybe something fried inside?

Nah, they always do that. You tried forcing a recovery boot using the IR controller ?

I did a forced recovery via the controller and that got it booting again. I redid the patchstick, even switched to the beta 12 version and I still get the same error message. It failed the patchstick switches to telnetd then shows me a login and just sits there. I pulled the power after letting it sit for awhile. When I tried to start it up without the patchstick again the apple tv wouldn't boot again. Any other ideas?

telnet in and try it manually. you will need a wired connection to do this, wireless will not work. otherwise... try another brand flash drive.

is there a guide anywhere on how to do it manually? I checked the Wiki, but didn't see anything. Didn't see anything in the stickies either.

mount the second partition on the flash drive to /mnt/flashfs, run patchstick.sh. Should take care of everything.

NEVER MIND! So I didn't realize USB Image Tool had to be on device mode and not volume mode. Worked fine now. It was set to volume mode by default I think. My bad...

Ok not having a lot of luck here. I'm telneted in and logged in as root root. I did fdisk -l and got

isk /dev/sda: 40.0 GB, 40007761920 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4864 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 4864 39070076 ee EFI GPT

Disk /dev/sdb: 4007 MB, 4007657472 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 487 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 488 3913696+ c Win95 FAT32 (LBA)
Partition 1 has different physical/logical endings:
phys=(486, 254, 63) logical=(487, 60, 21)
I did a mkdir /mnt/flashfs

I don't get what I'm supposed to be mounting though.
I tried:
mount /dev/sdb /mnt/flashfs

and
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/flashfs

both give me mounting /dev/sdb (or sdb1) on /mnt/flashfs failed: Invalid argument.

Are either of those the right partitions? Am I doing something wrong?

That's the same error I'm getting with the patchstick. Is it not getting created propperly? I'm just running the atv-win-2.0.exe. Having it download 2.4 and create a patchstick.img file. Then USB Image Tool fires up. I select the thumb drive and hit restore then select patchstick.img. Done deal right?

something not correct, "ls /dev/sd*" and post the results.

don't use fdisk, use parted. fdisk does not understand GPT disk format.

I've read so much that my brain now hurts. Can someone please explain simply what the process is to create a patchstick via Windows for the AppleTV so that I can SSH in and install XBMC?

I've tried atv-win-2.0 exe which created some image on my laptop, not sure what I'm suppose to do with the image. Am I to simply copy it to a USB thumb drive and plug it into ATV? I've SSH'd into my iPhone in the past and don't have a problem with CMD line prompts, just not sure what the heck to do here.

Thanks.

The instructions say to use the application "Usb Image Tool" to copy the disk image to the patchstick. You did read the readme.txt ?
