At the risk of sounding like a dick. It would be nice if we kept images as high quality as possible. It is always better to scale down than to scale up.

Man that one was a pain to get the right look... Ow well getting better with gimp!!!

To anyone interested... creating fanart isn't rocket science by any means. Most of the time its downloading high rez posters and cropping the image... wallah fanart!

I have started a fairly verbose "guide", it is fairly long winded (cause I am generally lol).

Bewared though, I have yet to get to using tools like crop, heal, clone etc in gimp. If you know how to crop, rotate etc you should be fine...

At the risk of sounding like a dick......Most films that are more than 15 years old, don't have Hi-Res Images to scale down.....therefore, we do what we can. If you can find a Hi-Res image for EVERY movie EVER made, let me know where to look.......I'll start using those. Till then I'll still keep trying to provide images for those who can't make their own stuff.

We Good?

@ FourTwentySmilz

Of course we are "good." It is just fanart after all ;) That being said, we have had this discussion before on themoviedb forums.
http://forums.themoviedb.org/topic/20/fanart-quality/

Travis never actually gave a definitive answer but it looks like "bad" fanart will be reported and removed. All I am saying is that it is better to put up nothing at all than something pixelated that you will then have to go through and remove if it is automatically downloaded. As CRN mentioned in the thread, all htpc programs have a background that they will show if there is no fanart available and unless you are using a horrible skin that background will look better than a pixelated and out of aspect fanart image.

As for movies that have little or no high quality images. If you really like the movie, take the time to make a "custom" fanart. You can work wonders with multiple small images and not have to stretch them. If you don't like the movie enough to put in that kind of time, then don't worry about it ;) Also, as I have seen on R1DB.com you can scan the DVD cover of a movie at very high quality and make some pretty great fanart from that. This is also helpful for those hard to find movies. Just my thoughts on it. Cheers.

dandirk
2008-11-03, 20:46
The problem with "only good fanart" is peoples subject opinion of "good" or not "bad". There are some easy ones and then there is the grey area where it may look good on a 720p with a semi-small screen and horrible on a 1080p large screen...

I know my tastes are less strict then CRN's.

If someone is uploading art chances are they are using it, so in their mind the art is acceptable...

I think reporting poor art once a better quality one has been uploaded is ok, but trying to remove "bad" art when there are no other options is a waste of time.

We all have to edit/update our movie/info/art etc when we add movies. Each one of us have different preferences as to fanart, posters, titles, overview etc. I personally am pretty anal about info when I add new movies. I hand select my fanart, poster and info just to make sure it is what I want. This gives me control of my info/system. If someone is particular like me, they should be doing the same, cause plenty of people are not and are happy with default info, first fanart available etc.

Oh Rand thanks for the link to R1DB.com... we need more of those it had some better sources for a few of my fanart's that I know are "bad". So I will be able to improve to a somewhat acceptable level.

I'd realized that was on %100 monthly bandwidth, but after logging out, it would let me download the pics..seems a bit crappy that then :(

I would've upped them to themoviebd, but it doesn't give you any named credit and I'm a bit arsey about that :)

Yeah, I do prefer promo stills as backdrops..I think sometimes posters are too photoshopped and removed from the film. The stills can be more interesting..Just a shame they're not so easy to find.

There's a site that has a load of key scenes but they're just shy of 1280 wide (they're all 1200 and compressed some) and, they are a bit protected - but you can get round saving them by saving the image page, opening it up in wordpad and finding the URL. That's www.toutlecine.com

It's something to use until I find a better resource. If anyone knows? :(

Also added some walls to thetvdb.com/pobhockle (http://www.thetvdb.com/index.php?tab=recentbanners&bannertype=fanart&banneruser=5723)

( I put the Gold bars on these, because these will be packed in a folder along with the MediaStream "Gold Edition" Theme XPR when it's released)

What about something like this:

http://s2.largeimagehost.com/TN/eQscsFX/tn_sports+art.jpg (http://s2.largeimagehost.com/img/untilted/eQscsFe/sports+art.jpg.html)
http://s2.largeimagehost.com/TN/eQscsFr/tn_Documentary.jpg (http://s2.largeimagehost.com/img/untilted/eQscsFc/Documentary.jpg.html)

I think that the text and generic CD images/bars look a bit...rough for the HD content we've been putting out. Plus I think it would be cooler to do it w/o text...have one image that can convey what genre you're supposed to be using...

DGMurdockIII.....

John Adams was a HBO Mini-Series that was made up of 7 episodes. TheTVdB has FanArt and episode descriptions ( and Thumbnails) for the series HERE (http://thetvdb.com/index.php?tab=series&id=81547&lid=7). It may have been released on DVD as an entire movie, so the FanArt is being added to theMovieDb now.

It's the art style matching the image to the right of "To Shell-ebrate is Awesome!" I think that series started in 1984. Is that what you wanted?

@Aenima99x -

Here are a few samples of the ones I've found for you. Your list was rather difficult, being that most of the movies listed were old, indie, or both. It's a problem finding high-res images for lesser-known movies, which then means you've got to go to more creative methods to make art that works. :D

So, what I would suggest...take screenshots of the movies playing in XBMC. The rendering/upscaling in XBMC is crispy enough where you can usually make some kind of respectable fanart out of it. It's how I get a lot of the images for older movies.

Regardless, the following are uploaded to themovieDB and should be scrapable now. :D

A Bronx Tale
Abandoned
American Nightmare
Basketball Diaries
Borderland
Eight Men Out
H.H. Holmes...
Josh Blue, 7 More Days In the Tank (Use generic Josh Blue Pic, not from movie)
My Man Godfrey (Not the greatest...had to try and clean up an old...small picture)
Return to House On Haunted Hill
Say Anything
Sleepaway Camp (Might actually be a pic from SC2...)
The Ice Harvest
Thr3e

So...yeah...sorry I couldn't get more. I'll keep hunting for a few of em, maybe I can come up with something better...again, try screenshots. Even if you just take them, I'll edit them for you.

Cheech and Chong is done and uploaded... I am generally against any text or lettering in fanart, so I removed the text on the movie screen but still kept the text on the license plate. Figure it would be wrong to remove "Smoke it" from the a C&C piece:D

After long nights of getting (both) my PC and xbox restored to working order I will be releasing 400+ pieces of fanart sized to 960x540. 90% of them are from TMDb.org.....the rest are some I've made for movies not listed there. Older stuff like Gleaming the Cube, Bicentenial Man, Gridlock'd....and some others. It's rather late now so I will post a link tomorrow for download........or if I can't sleep, I'll be back later to do it.

no problem paul. I seen where you mentioned it, and went ahead and found what I could work with. I hope you ( and others) like it. I may do the entire 007 series in that same scheme, with the movie titles off to the side and the proper pictures in the gun barrel. Would that be to your liking? let me know.

Here is art for Machine Girl, Stuck on You, and The Raven. I also added Gran Torino and The Uninvited...two movies just coming out.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/mzzz2iidzdz/Fanartlil.rar

The biggest problem with finding most of the movies on this list is that they occurred in that window between "classic" movies and 2000. I always have difficulty finding late 80's/90's movies due to the lack of media. Most websites that still exist for those movies had no concept of HD video, and the "pictures" are freaking TINY.

Older movies have great B&W stills taken from the actual film, and new movies have so much crap out there...you just fall into the grey area.

What I would do for the remainder of these movies is to play them in XBMC, and then take a SCREENSHOT of a few different scenes. If you want to send me those screenshots, I will do my best with them and then upload them for you, otherwise you can have a go at them yourself.

Either way, screenshots are about the only answer to getting a somewhat reasonable High-rez image to use as fanart. It's what I do for my *missing* art. ;)

Youch...couple of them are a little rough. I mean...I know what you had to work with, but you can see why I opted not to use those source images.

Again, not a bad attempt considering I know what images you used to make those, but I'd still suggest getting us some screenshots of those movies so we can make something that looks a little higher-rez.

I love the one for "Stuck on You" tho. Did you find a large copy of that logo, or did you blow it up yourself?

I've not tested them on the HDTV, but if anyone is like me.....being uniform is better than being blank. Plus....if you are one of the people who hasn't went ahead and bought an HDTV (like my Dad), the images look pretty good in SD. My Dad flipped when he seen it the other week. I've got Undercover Brother on my NAS....I'll pick up some images tonight an post them later.

I agree with you that having uniformity is much better than gaps...but I won't do it at the cost of quality. I do have a HDTV, and I try to make anything I design accessible to the most amount of people as possible. I also try to keep it within the guidelines of TheMovieDB.org.

I'm not trying to be a HD snob or anything, I just think that we should have a standard in mind when we're designing these.

And unfortunately, it's rather hard to upscale an 500px image to 1200 without having to surface blur the crap out of the image to compensate. ;)

Thus, the suggestion of screenshots.

FourTwentySmilz

Totally understand. And I do have an HDTV. 42" Sanyo 720p. It's a matter of choice really. I rarely post at theMovieDb anymore, only because I've been working on the 960x540 pack, and restored both the xbox and PC. But I still have a 32" SDTV in my bedroom and since installing XBMC on the PC, the xbox stays in there now.

Here is all my fanart downloaded with Media Companion and some made by me.

960x540 - 295 films worth.

Okay...what is the deal with 960x540? Why are you guys suddenly coming out with these sets of half-rez images? I think we've kinda talked about this as being because xbmc on xbox doesn't like 1280 rez images?

If that's why...dude, it's not doing any good. There isn't going to be some massive difference in speed because you killed the resolution on your fanart. It's just going to give you crappier fanart.

And if you're running on a SDTV, then using 960x540 images is totally pointless because you might as well just make them 640x480 and match the SDTV's native resolution anyways.

Point is...the half-resolution doesn't make any sense. I guarantee you, if using properly compressed backdrops at 1280x720, you shouldn't have any problems with performance on your Xbox1. I know. Every backdrop I make I use on my Xbox. And they work fine.

Edit: Although, looking at some of the art on TMDB, I can see that more than a few of the source images downloaded weren't that great in the first place.

Dude...very nice. I can do wonders with those screenshots...unfortunately, with today being Xmas eve and all, I am socially bound to other tasks today. I guarantee you tho, you will have some crispiness as a result of those screenshots.

Even if you did sneak a few other movies in there. ;)

Look in the upload I did a few posts ago...there are already some pretty decent shots I found for Orange County, Shallow Hal, Undercover Brother and Radio. Anything I did is also upped to TMDB already too.

Digi......The 960x540 FanArt has really helped my xbox run better. As you may well know......Most all the xboxes out there run differently. Some have problems with this, others with that. I am really glad you have one of those xboxes that give you no problems, but don't jump in my thread raising hell about what people post. If you don't use anything but 1280x720 FanArt, fine. BUT, Other people use other things, and they don't tell you how wrong you are for not doing things their way.

I really, REALLY, enjoy the work you do, and I hope you understand what I am trying to say. It is nothing personal.......just don't crap on other people for not doing things YOUR way.

I wasn't trying to crap on anybody. I'm just trying to understand something that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I have a 1st gen Xbox, so I know I'm pushing the lowest hardware possible. Why mine works fine and yours doesn't is confusing, and it would lead me to believe that it has to be something other than the fanart.

So what I'm suggesting is...because you have a lot of people that listen to you in the department of fanart...why not try and see if it's something other than the art before telling everybody they have to run lower resolution graphics?

I'm not trying to tell anybody they have to be like me, or use the resolution I say they have to use. But I am trying to say that I think it's utterly unnecessary to take all these images and downgrade them. Use whatever resolution graphics you want. Knock yourself out. I just feel compelled to tell people when it appears that they're wasting their time...

I run my xbox in HD 720p on a 32inch tv and it looks fine I don't have binocular vision so tiny little jaggies don't bother me and using some of the new skins like horizonz and mediastream fanart has to be halved or films don't play or worst case the xbox crashes if I use PM3-HD I can use bigger but that skin isn't that nice looking in my opinion.

here are screenshots of the fanart in the background they look fine.

http://s3.supload.com/thumbs/default/screenshot000-20081224142002.png (http://s3.supload.com/free/screenshot000-20081224142002.png/view/)http://s3.supload.com/thumbs/default/screenshot001-20081224142002.png (http://s3.supload.com/free/screenshot001-20081224142002.png/view/)http://s3.supload.com/thumbs/default/screenshot002-20081224142003.png (http://s3.supload.com/free/screenshot002-20081224142003.png/view/)http://s3.supload.com/thumbs/default/screenshot003-20081224142004.png (http://s3.supload.com/free/screenshot003-20081224142004.png/view/)

Nearly all poster art is HD as the xbox lowers them when converting them to tbn they work fine and look good ( Custom TBN Rez setting 300 )

All the underlined ones already have fanart. I highly Recommend you use billyad2000's XBMC Media Companion (http://billyad2000.darkbb.com/announcements-f1/) to scrape your fanarts as it does a lot better job of scraping fanart than XBMC's own scrapers and if there are multiple fanarts you can choose which ones you want.

smcnally75 -

I uploaded the art made from your Screenshots to TMDB. I did ones for yellowbeard, what's the worst..., vampire in brooklyn, soul survivors (didn't have a TMDB entry, make one, and I'll upload), Mercury Rising, Ride The Bullet, Radio, Orange County, Meatballs, and Empire Records. I tried for "Virus", but couldn't get a quality level I was comfortable with uploading to the general masses. So, I made a generic one instead. It's not bad, but it's not actually from the movie either. Meh...

To the other fellow who upped the list...I'm working on yours now, but my GF is sick today, so now I've got to attend to her...I'll see what I can do yet. I did make backdrops for Uptown Girls and Under The Tuscan Sun already.

I am new to this particular forum, but I just wanted to mention something, being a graphics designer myself....

When it comes to image quality, the bigger the better! Images can always be reduced to what ever you want. Take a 1920 x 1080 image and reduce it to 800 x 600 and it will look perfect!

Now try to take an 800 x 600 image and enlarge it to 1920 x 1080, and it will look like crap.

I say have the images at the maximum aloud on imdb, and if anyone wants to reduce them to save a few cpu cycles or use a bit less memory for a particular system, then so be it. There are TONS of batch image converters out there that you can point to a directory full of HI-Res images, and batch convert them down to what every res you want.

Someone mentioned it looking fine on a 32" TV. I am sure that it does, but I can bet it would not look that great on my HD 65" TV

Graphics and photography 101:
You can always reduce with no loss of quality, but you can not enlarge without losing quality.

I couldn't agree with you more. And I was gonna say something to the guy with the 32" TV, but didn't see the point in even keeping up the argument.

The biggest problem with 1080 graphics is finding source images that are of a good enough resolution. Even with the 720x ones I do, I often have to upscale the source to make it work. Upscaling from 1024 - 1280 isn't too noticeable, but adding an extra 900 pixels...that's a bit much.

So, I agree, and make 1080 res gfx wherever possible, but with older images, cranking them up that high just looks bad...

Well I just created a few that I needed. The resolution is good, I just hope they are in the right "style" as I am new to the whole fan art, and how they look in the skins :) I have done quite a few custom DVD covers, and resisting the urge to add text to the fanart is tough :D

Wow, that was quick! Thanks for the backdrops! Nice work!

I'm not sure where you recognize my name (or avatar) from. I have a full album music blog called Psychotic Leisure Music (http://p-l-m.blogspot.com/). I was the guy that compiled and maintained the MilkDrop for XBMC Preset MegaPack. Uh...about nine months ago I put together a little pack of Music backdrops in that old Aeon [Backpack] thread. Any of those ring a bell?

Thanks again!

No, unfortunately, the only images available for Cyborg Soldier were beyond the scope of unusable. I'm hoping that I'll be able to have access to a lot more images very soon, possibly making this (and other hard-to-find movies) more possible. Not sure yet. :D

And yes...the Milkdrop pack. It's my favorite vis to use on XBMC. Been seeing your name in my presets for years...kudos. Any updates to the Milkdrop front?

Sebastian,

Please check thetvdb.com for Television fanart before making requests. Both shows are already there.

Also, Movie Info Plus is a program that will scan your TV and movie folders and automatically download fanart for those files it recognizes.

Here is a list of FanArt I am requesting as I can't find any good ones. I know how to create thumbnails, but not high rez stuff like digitalhigh.

se7en - The one that is on there I found on TMDB is horrible. I did one via ffmpeg thumbnail and it was really sweet, but I am having problems getting XBMC to display it.

Fort Apache The Bronx
Rambo
Rambo II

The following are Abbott and Costello Movies
Meet Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde (1953)
Meet the Keystone Kops (1955)
Meet the Mummy (1955)
Africa Screams (1941)
Dance With Me Henry ( 1956)
Hold that Ghost (1941)
In the Navy (1941)
Jack and the Beanstalk (1952)
Keep 'em Flying (1941)
One Night In the Tropics (1940)
Pardon My Sarong (1942)
Ride 'em Cowboy (1942)
The Noose Hangs High (1948)
Who Done It (1942)

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Rebound The Legend of Earl 'The Goat' Manigault
Resident Evil Degeneration
Nightmare on Elm Street
Prince of Egypt
Stir Crazy

That's about it. If someone can tell me how I can just create them myself, I would be more than happy to and upload them to TMDB

Well here's the deal I was speaking with digitalhigh on another forum and he told me that I should make my requests on here for the fanart I didn't have. Him and I were talking and I said that I would be more than happy doing them but I know that he's really good at what he does, and he told me he didn't mind. Also, I couldn't get Abbott and Costello from TMDB cause they don't exist on there. I can't even get decent dvd covers, I have to go to Amazon and get them and modify them. Once I am done tidying up my library I will be more than happy and share. I wasn't aware there was a protocol on posting in this forum, thank you for pointing it out though, as I will provide the links as they become available.

Are there any easier ways im missing to d this? Thanks.

No that's about the best way I've found to do it. Obviously, the higher quality the source video, the higher quality the screenshot will be.

Wonder when I get my sticky??? lolI am not convinced yet that we need this as a sticky when there already is a sticky in this forum called "themoviedb.org (TMDb) - The Open Movie Database (wiki-based, register and contribute) (http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=38716)"?

...also, we really need to try to encourage people to register accounts for themselves on themoviedb.org (http://www.themoviedb.org) (and thetvdb.com (http://www.thetvdb.com) as well) website, not only to contribute FanArt, but Posters, Screenshots, and maybe most importantly meta data information in text about the movies.

Just as your advantage normal person have registered and contributed to imdb.com and tv.com in the past, so do they need to do today for themoviedb.org (http://www.themoviedb.org) and thetvdb.com (http://www.thetvdb.com)

Yes they do. I'll see if I can't find something I can upload to them today for credits, or maybe find sources elsewhere...totally spaced on doing those for you, been working on h264 playback/wake-on-USB/emulator setup/overclocking. So, sorry. ADD is a biotch. :D

Edit: Grrr...I just looked through about two dozen mmovis for which I have posters...and all of them have three times as many images. I'm just sitting here thinking about how many images I could make if I only had the credits. Maybe I should start asking for donations. Seems like that's the fashionable thing to do lately. ;)

Ok, I have contributed quite a few FanArt images myself, but could definately use some help with these. I know there are quite a few, and do not expect anyone to do all of them! But, on the other hand, if someone is looking for ones to do, here they are :)

20000 Leagues Under the Sea
Air Buddies
All the Good Ones Are Married
Americanizing Shelley
An American Werewolf in Paris
Balls Out The Gary Houseman Story
Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure
Bottoms Up
The Butterfly Effect 2
Dude, Where's My Car?
Earthsea
Excalibur
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer
Lean on Me
October Sky
Smokey and the Bandit
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
Thunderbirds Movie (2004)
Twister

These last 2 are 2 of my favorite movies! If anyone out there has not seen them, I highly recommend them!

White Squall
The Ultimate Gift

Now a final question, and maybe redundant.... when anyone creates the fan art, they are uploaded to MovieDB.org right? I do this myself, so when you scan for fanart with either Media Companion or Media Info, they will be automatically downloaded.

On another note. I am not sure who wrote either program, by forum user name, but think it would be a great idea to be able to upload to the database, as easily as download. For instance, fanart is found for a movie on my system, if it does not exist on server, it should be uploaded automatically. Possibly a "Would you like to share this fanart" dialog when this happens. I am sure there are many out there that have created their own fanart, that have not taken the time to upload them. This would definitely increase what is available on the server!

Art already exists for Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, American Werewolf, Excalibur, Dude Where's My car, and Twister. The one's for Bill & Ted and Twister I made myself.

For these entries, please make a page for them at TMDB so I can just upload the images when I'm done. And seeing as how XBMC now scrapes movie info from TMDB, the more you fill out the better.

All the Good Ones Are Married
Americanizing Shelley

Otherwise, I got your requests covered. I'm also going to see if I can find better images to use for American Werewoldf and Dude Where's my car. Thanks to the generosity of Nymart, I've now got access to quite a few nice source images. I'm finishing up the last requests that were made, and then I'll get crackin' on your list.

Second, yes, I personally upload everything I make to TMDB, and I know 420smilez does too.

Third...I couldn't agree more about your idea of an auto-upload feature for the media programs. A few of the movies I have art for weren't uploaded to TMDB, and I found myself stopping from picking new images to upload the old ones first so they wouldn't be lost. The problem would be that of ensuring that the file you're uploading isn't a dupe of one that already exists. Duplicate images are already a minor problem. You'd have to have a routine that compared the filesize and dimensions, and then showed the user the image that it suspected of already being uploaded. Even then, I bet it wouldn't be foolproof.

Check back in a day or two for your images. :D

Thanks for the offer, but I can usually manage. Dumbly enough, I never used the repair tool until these past couple of images. Always just the clone stamp. As far as the high-rez sources, I uploaded the majority of the posters these came from as well. If I could find something, I did it.

Balls out is one I'm especially pleased with. I had to be a little creative as there were barely any source images to use...

I figured that out after I asked by looking at the history for all the movies you said you made. Didn't mean to offend, it just seemed like a possibility after you showed that source. I didn't really think it was you after I thought about it for a minute either, as you've been pretty involved in the fanart thing, and would resultantly just know better.

Yea, the "black board background" was one image (http://www.nick.com/shows/specials/gymteacher/wallpaper2_1280.jhtml) from the Nickelodeon website, and I found another decent resolution (http://www.nick.com/shows/specials/gymteacher/gtwall1_1280.jpg) of the kid and the coach, and just cut them out and pasted over the bg, and added a drop shadow. Same for the cover basically, the movie title from one image, and the bg from another....

Wow, that was a tough one! I could not find an image without the text all over it. It also didn't look right all grouped together in the center, so I moved the guy peering through the blinds over to the left. Then of course I had to reconstruct some of the slats in the blinds that were hidden behind her hair, anf fix the top of both of the guys heads. I also "cleared up" her face a bit, as the scan had a lot of noise in it....

I just did a fanart for Thunderbirds (http://themoviedb.org/movie/14622)(2004). It is not as good as I would like, but I searched EVERYWHERE for hi-res art! (Just TRY searching Google for "Thunderbirds"! hahah )

I spent over an hour on this one, as I had to get the cast from one place and the ship from another, cut the ship out, and try extend the the "wings" as they were chopped off in all of the covers. (Stretching it to go edge to edge was just upsizing it toooooo much!)

I found one cover that was 6100 wide something resolution and though WOW finally, just to download it and see it was probably up-sized from a 800 wide scan or something! hahaah

It is decent, and better than others I have seen, so I think it is acceptable.....

Now..... I need some help :) With the upcoming 3rd installment of "Witch Mountain", I ripped the original 2 Witch Mountain movies to my MediaPC so my Nephew can see the originals before seeing the new one. If someone can help with fanart for the first 2 movies, that would be great. I can not find anything acceptable in any of the image sites that I know of....

I created the movies on TMDB:

Escape to Witch Mountain (http://themoviedb.org/movie/14821) (1975)
Return From Witch Mountain (http://themoviedb.org/movie/14822) (1978)

I've got some free time today...I'll make you some art.

Here's a peek at the text removal I'm doing on "Escape". My end goal is to remove the rest of the crease lines, and then take the little text out of the top and bottom. The bottom will be simple, but the top part looks challenging. Then I'll probably separate the two parts of the picture and then place the people more to the left of the house so you can see the whole thing. The fence makes for a good border.

Check it out...I'm damned impressed with myself. Will have the fanart for this and return up tomorrow.

I did what I could.... You have to realize the movie is from 1978 and the image quality back then is just not that great. This is from a decent scan of the cover, but still looks pretty bad, due to the quality of the cover when it was designed.

Maybe I misunderstood you... You wanted just the cover right? As there are already a selection of fanart's available....The free images from that site are still pretty good resolution.... The "free" resolution on the site above for "The Baker" is 1530 width (After trimming off the spine and back).

I personally keep my covers to around 600 to 1000 pixel width. When you view them in just about any skin, they are just the size of thumbnails for the most part. The fanart is where I am really picky about the resolution, as they are stretched to around 40 inches on my TV :)

I uploaded it (http://themoviedb.org/image/posters/17370/The_Baker_-_Cover.jpg) to TMDB, Hope it is what you were looking for.

someone sure is uploading shit quality backgrounds!
the size requirements dont mean you can upscale 800x600 image and be happy with it.
better no fan-art then crappy quality

That wasn't a 800 x 600 image up-scaled! Sheesh..... I think it was a 320 x 240 thumbnail instead :D

All I can make out is that It was uploaded by someone using Cricket Communications as their ISP from Peoria, Arizona.

Where do you guys get the covers from. I will help out posting covers to the movies that are missing them or add to ones that have one cover or so but I need a site that has them in the resolutions needed.

Any help will be great, oh and it has to be free since I found a couple but you have to pay for.

Thanks

Here are a few that I have bookmarked. On the pay ones, sometimes the free version to DL is pretty good quality. I usually check a few of them, and try to find the best one.

Pay covers, but many times the Free version is pretty good quality
http://www.freecovers.net/search.php?search=candy&cat=1&x=15&y=8

Use as a last resort, as the cover scans are usually pretty crappy:

If anyone has any more sites, please post em up!

Google is also your friend, especially for fanart. Check the official moviesites for wallpapers and gallery sites to the main actors. :;):
And impawards.com for posters.

If you guys are noticing shit images on TMDB, go to their forums and post in the "Site Improvements" area with a message saying "PLEASE FIND WHO'S DOING THIS." with a link to the image in question.

Since we were having an issue with one person uploading mad scans from Freecovers and calling them fanart, a system has been implemented to track who uploads what. If they continue to upload crap, they can be removed.

And since I'm on the subject, here are some guidelines to anybody who may be considering uploading to TMDB...

1. Posting a scan of a DVD cover does not constitute artwork. Nor does taking a desktop wallpaper from the movie's fansite and not even bothering to remove the text/copyright logo/etc.

2. If you just read "remove text from an image" and haven't the faintest inkling of how you would go about doing that...then there's a good chance you have no business making fanart. This isn't meant to be rude or insulting. I'm just saying...if you don't know how to swim, stay the F*** out of the water. It only makes more work for the the staff at TMDB.

3. Fanart should be at MINIMUM 1280x720, 1920x1080 preferred. Like was previously stated, do NOT take an 800x600 image and try to stretch it. Hell, I wouldn't even take a 1024x760 image and stretch it. Google Image search for "Large Images" or "Extra Large Images".

www.movieposterdb.com is an excellent site for HIGH-rez images. If you can't find a poster there, odds are they don't have one.

As I'm not free to do backdrops lately, anybody who KNOWS how to do backdrops can PM me for my login info @ movieposterdb. I've still got a few credits that can be used to help the community.

4. If you can't find a good source image...DON'T MAKE ANYTHING. It's that simple. I've not had fanart for the movie "8 Heads In a Duffel Bag" for months because of this rule. Having no art is still better than having some upscaled, artifacted, blurry POS on the screen.

5. Screenshots are sometimes the only way to get fanart. This only counts if the source video is good enough to yield one. Use your discretion. If the image is too small...then the image is too small. Upscaling probably won't help the problem.

So...do we see an underlying theme here?

So...do we see an underlying theme here?

Yes, frustration.

I usually don't report crappy images unless there are better ones available. Just adding them to my to-do pile. :nerd:

Does anyone else not like having their fanart and thumbnail to be using the same graphic? I mean, if a fanart is made from a high-rez poster and uploaded does anybody like using both the thumbnail and fanart even though they are the same?

it bugs me, yeah. I think it should be avoided when at all possible

ethan_9219

Yeah, i was wondering because sometimes (well, a lot of the time actually) the poster and the thumbnail are the same....So i wanted to know in this situation is it bad manners to request fanart for that movie, even though it technically has a suitable fanart?

I know that personally, if I upload a backdrop based on a poster, I will make sure to upload another poster that is different for the exact reasons you're talking about.

But no, it's not bad manners. Just make sure to say "This one has a fanart that matches the poster, that's why I'm asking for another.", otherwise somebody will be quick to point out that "Movie X" already has fanart. ;)

I found a page with high quality movie scans from mostly old movies. Maybe the owner would agree to let tmdb use it since it is non-comercial.

I have two movies that i can't get no cover arts from tMDb?
One is W.2008.DVDRip.XviD and the other is It happened one night (1934)
I get only data but no pictures. Tryed to rename, clean database, refresh,... in many ways but nothing helped. I still have avtogenerated thumb from video as cover.
Anybody had this similar problem?
For other 50 movies there was no problem getting scraped images from tMDb.

Maybe try a 3rd-party organizing program like MIP? I know W. was a tricky one to get recognized.

What exactly do you mean by "I also select it from recommended options"? In XBMC or MIP?

Also, what build of XBMC are you using?

I'm using XBMCSetup-Rev18622-jester.exe

In XBMC: When I press "Info" on selected movie I get a list of movie titles from tMDb. In my case it's only one title to select. Then movie is scraped, bu still I don't get it's cover arts??
I don't have any .nfo in movie folder. Just the movie inside and right naming for both.
For all others movies it's working ok. Just for few I get this video thumb:oo:

Hey digitalhigh think you could lend me a hand with this one?

You know, I saw you posted in here again, and went and dug this out before I even read your post.

I actually started this waaaaaay back when you first asked for it, but I got sidetracked and never finished the text removal. As it is, I'm totally swamped still, or I'd finish it for you.

So, if you or somebody else here can pull off the text removal, by all means. Otherwise, lemme know, and I'll clear some time to do it myself.

Sorry for slacking...just got a full plate ATM.
