Sorry to bring this up again, this is the only setting that keeps me from using XBMC full time from Windows. I have installed the latest beta, and my main interest is watching anime in MKV. Usually subtitle groups will have custom font and coloring settings which make the experience more enjoyable, its' one thing that seems to escape me how to set.

Here is an example from XBMC beta 2:

Here is what it should look like (Windows Media Player):

I actually tried out Plex on my MacBook and it does render the subtitles like WMP, so it leads me to believe that XBMC can do the same, but my MacBook is for work and not my HTPC lol

Don't be to worried about this. The next release that the XBMC team will make will fix almost 90% of your subtitle problems. The newer svn builds have fixed alot of the subtitle issues. So just wait a bit and all will be good.

That's good news, Beta 3 should be what I should be drooling for then?

SVN has some fixes, but mostly the color of text. The subs still don't show custom font.

I thought custom font support was put in originally with Rudd's patch, or are you referring to using the OS's font list? If the .ssa contains custom fonts then they should be extracted and used.

Has anyone tried this on Linux?

Cheers,
Jonathan

Praying for update! Does this work in the Linux build?

ssa support for win32 was added two weeks ago and isn't included in the beta build.
Maybe one of you can try one of the unofficial builds posted in the sticky.

I tried this build: XBMCSetup-Rev16026.exe and it appears the colors are correct, but the fonts are still wrong (defaulting to Arial)

Link me a sample file and I'll take a look.

I just tried the latest beta, still the font face & size are ignored, the coloring is correct though.

I downloaded Plex (OSX version?) and it works perfect, smooth too

Jonathan,

I'll do a little digging and see if I can figure out why it's happening. I still have a machine that runs XBMC around here. If it's an easy fix, is there the possibility that we may see a maintenance release that resolves it before 9.04?

Ok. This is weird. The problem is intermittent.

I need to play with it more, but what I think is happening, is for some reason it's sometimes using the SRT renderer instead of the SSA renderer.

This is happening on the Linux build.

Weird.

Let me know how to reproduce.

We have the 8.10 branch in place in order to backport fixes. Whether or not something like this would qualify I don't know - it depends on what is required of the fix (i.e. likelihood of breaking stuff.)

Regular releases will still be occuring on all platforms as per usual, so you won't have to wait until 9.04 for a new release - they just might not be as stable necessarily (though our track record is pretty good in this area).

Cheers,
Jonathan

Has there been any progress on this? I've been using rev17778 for Windows.

This is what I notice: it renders the size and colors correctly and it even tries to render the font, but if the font is non-existent on the system it will not render it.

Example:

* Your subtitle font in XBMC is arial.ttf
* First movie has subtitles with font configs as "Trebuchet MS 24pt Bold"
* Second movie has subtitles with font configs as "Weird font only my friends know about 30pt"
* Both movies have the font embedded in the file (mkv, ogm whatever - SSA)

First movie will be rendered completely ok since 99% of Windows users have Trebuchet MS installed. Second movie will be rendered in Arial 30pt since XBMC does not retrieve embedded fonts for that.

For this tests it's easy to find fansubbed Anime that have styled fonts which is the test case here.
