View Full Version : TV episodes in MKV format absent in library mode
Installed XBMC for Windows on my Vista Ultimate HTPC, trying to replace the terrible media center in Vista.
I keep all my tv episodes in folders for the show, subfolders for the season. XBMC gathered info for all the shows fine, and all the show folders appear in library mode. However, the shows that use MKV files for the indivdual episodes aren't working. I can see the folder for the show, but it shows zero episodes. If I access it through the standard method (not library mode) I can see and play the files, but library mode shows no episodes.
Shows that use avi or mpg formats for episodes are fine, all episodes appearing in library and selectable/playable.
I did a couple searches but couldn't find anything. Sorry if it's an obvious answer that I'm missing!
Thanks in advance!

From the XBMC wiki page ...http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=Advancedsettings.xml#.3Cvideoextensions.3E
These are the current default extensions for VIDEOS:
.m4v .3gp .nsv .ts .ty .strm .rm .rmvb .m3u .ifo .mov .qt .divx .xvid .bivx .vob .nrg .img .iso .pva .wmv .asf .asx .ogm .m2v .avi .bin .dat .dvr-ms .mpg .mpeg .mp4 .mkv .avc .vp3 .svq3 .nuv .viv .dv .fli .flv .rar .001 .wpl .zip
have you tried 'scanning for new content' on the actual TV show? I get it sometimes where a TV show is added but no episodes, but a 'scan for new content' brings them up.
Yeah, all my movies in mkv format play fine, and they all appear in the library, and work in every aspect of XBMC, so it doesn't look like an issue with compatibility or codecs or anything.
I have tried scanning foir new content on the actual show, and nothing is coming up. I have also tried a "Refresh" of the show information.
I'm wondering if perhaps it's the naming convention on the files? They have some long names, which I never altered, so they have all sorts of info that doesn't pertain to the actual episode. But then I have some shows that have episode files named as "401", for season 4, episode 1, but those aren't showing up in the library either. What kind of naming convention are you using for mkv format tv episodes?
Ok, I just checked some more shows and am now noticing that shows with episodes in avi format are doing it as well, so it's clearly not the extension.
For example, I have all seasons of Star Trek TNG, I have a "Star Trek" folder, then a "TNG" folder under that, then 7 "Season #" folders containing the episodes, which are named like "Star Trek TNG - 1x01-1x02 - Encounter at Farpoint [NiteShdw]", all of these episodes show up normally.
Then I have a folder for "How I Met Your Mother", with 4 "Season #" folders containing episodes named like "401", etc. None of these episodes show up. Some of these files are mkv (the hd version) and some are avi (sd versions).
Do I need to name all files "[show name] - [s#]x[ep#] - [epTitle]"? That's going to be a pita to rename, but thems the breaks, if that's what I need. Input?
yes you will because xbmc has no idea if its season 40 episode 1 or season 1 episode 4 it needs a way to define it

dondro, or anybody else, do you have any updates on this? I have the same problem - have some .mkv files in my video library folders, but they are not in the Library view. I can play tam only from 'non library' view.
thanks.
