Sometimes they work, but most of the time they don't. I have a couple of animes which are packed in OGMs and MKVs. Subtitles are streamed inside those files, obviously. I found several small and big issues with em:
1) Neither the names of audio streams nor subtitles are detected correctly. Audio streams are named "Stereo" most of the times, and subtitles are more than once called "Unknown". Zoomplayer can detect two audio streams "Japanese" and "English", and one subtitle track "English".
2) Selecting a different audio stream will shift the video playback back a couple seconds while audio plays from where it should. This results in video playing very fast for several seconds to "catch up" with the audio.
3) Selecting a different subtitle track forwards the movie a second or two (but audio and video stay in sync).
4) More importantly, a subtitle that happens to be selected by default works but displays too early (I'll say about 2 seconds).
5) Most importantly, once a different subtitle is selected (or they are disabled and enabled again) they stop working. Seeking for a bit using the arrow-keys displays the "current" text (again 2 seconds in advance) but that's all it ever displays until I hit a seek-button again.
Please note that I haven't had any of these issues with any other media player. VLC, Zoomplayer and Media Player Classic don't show these problems. I haven't tried Vista Media Center because it doesn't support audio streams and subtitles alltogether. Currently my HTPC software of choice is Media Portal 1.0, and it's having none of these problems (although I had to tweak some DirectShow filters).
Relevant specs on the machine I tested with:
OS: Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 (and fully updated)
CPU: Core 2 Quad Q9450
Memory: 4GB and most of it is free
GPU: Geforce 8800GT 512MB (Driver 178.24)
Chipset: Intel P45 (Driver 9.0.0.1008)
