I just installed XBMC and have added my media folder to the library. With, XBMC running I select videos, and then navigate to a folder with an mkv file in it but the file doesn't show up under XBMC.

The file is clearly there in Windows explorer. I have all the appropriate codecs installed for proper playback of H.264 mkvs with 5.1 audio. The file plays just fine using Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, Media Player Classic, and VLC. Additionally, the file shows up just fine in Windows Media Center.

This is all on a machine with a fresh installation of Vista Ultimate x86. All Microsoft updates have been applied. I'm running the most recent installation of XBMC.

It was my understanding that XBMC could play H.264 mkvs just fine if your hardware was up to the task but I can't even find my mkvs within XBMC. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Or, is my understanding mistaken and XBMC cannot play mkvs?

You need to scan to library. To check it can play OK just browse to it using the file manager.

Thanks for the response. The solution was so painfully obvious that I feel stupid for even starting this thread. I added the public videos folder to the library instead of the videos folder in my user account. Basically, I thought I added the right folder but I didn't. Everything works fine now.

We've all go to start somewhere. How did it play?
